Conditional pathways to loneliness in older adults with vision impairment: a decision-tree analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of vision impairment continues to increase globally due to population growth and aging. Among older adults with vision impairment, loneliness is common. Prior studies assessing loneliness risk have relied on regression-based approaches, which may not capture complex, heterogeneous conditional pathways. We apply a theoretically guided machine learning approach to examine loneliness risk among older adults with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using baseline data from 210 adults with AMD (Agemean = 80.1 years) enrolle

Long-term care residents and staff perspectives on PARO using video-reflexive ethnography (VRE).

BACKGROUND: Residents with dementia in long-term care (LTC) often experience social isolation, loneliness, and distress. Socially assistive robots such as PARO, have been introduced to support psychosocial well-being, yet prior studies have typically examined resident or staff perspectives separately, limiting understanding of how such technologies function within everyday care practice. AIM: This study examined the relational, practical, and organizational feasibility of using the social robot PARO in a special care unit by exploring both residents' experiences and staff reflections. METHOD

Effects of acute alcohol consumption on hostile attribution bias towards emotional facial expressions and implicit approach/avoidance tendencies.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that a greater perception of hostility in social cues increases aggression, and alcohol influences perception of social cues. Taken together, this could explain some instances of alcohol-related aggression. This study investigated whether social drinkers interpret faces as more hostile following acute alcohol compared to placebo, and whether alcohol influences the tendency to approach or avoid emotional facial expressions. METHODS: Regular non-dependent drinkers (N = 84) participated in a double-blind placebo-controlled experiment. Participants completed two sess

Two is company: The posterior cerebellum and sequencing for pairs versus individuals during social preference prediction.

Previous studies have identified that the posterior cerebellum, which plays a role in processing temporal sequences in social events, is consistently and robustly activated when we predict future action sequences based on personality traits (Haihambo Haihambo et al. Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience 17(2), 241-251, 2022) and intentions (Haihambo et al. Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral Neuroscience 23(2), 323-339, 2023). In the current study, we investigated whether these cerebellar areas are selectively activated when we predict the sequences of (inter)actions based on protagonis

Barriers to cancer treatment and care for people experiencing structural vulnerability: a secondary analysis of ethnographic data.

BACKGROUND: A key pillar of Canada's healthcare system is universal access, yet significant barriers to cancer services remain for people impacted by structural vulnerability (e.g., poverty, homelessness, racism). For this reason, cancer is diagnosed at a later stage, resulting in worse patient outcomes, a reduced quality of life, and at a higher cost to the healthcare system. Those who face significant barriers to access are under-represented in cancer control services Consequently, these inequities result in people dying from cancers that are highly treatable and preventable, however; little

Protocol for a population-based molecular epidemiology study of tuberculosis transmission in a high HIV-burden setting: the Botswana Kopanyo study.

INTRODUCTION: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is transmitted from person to person via airborne droplet nuclei. At the community level, Mtb transmission depends on the exposure venue, infectiousness of the tuberculosis (TB) index case and the susceptibility of the index case's social network. People living with HIV infection are at high risk of TB, yet the factors associated with TB transmission within communities with high rates of TB and HIV are largely undocumented. The primary aim of the Kopanyo study is to better understand the demographic, clinical, social and geospatial factors associa

Out-of-home day care for families living in a disadvantaged area of London: economic evaluation alongside a RCT.

BACKGROUND: Children born into poverty have lifelong disadvantages compared with those more fortunate; social interventions seek to break this cycle of poverty and deprivation. Early Years Centres are one such intervention. These were established in deprived areas in the UK to provide high quality out-of-home day care. This paper reports the results of an economic evaluation conducted alongside a randomized controlled trial of one of these centres in the Borough of Hackney, London. METHODS: Participants were randomized to receive either high quality day care as provided by the centre or to ot

Saúde na Copa: The World's First Application of Participatory Surveillance for a Mass Gathering at FIFA World Cup 2014, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The 2005 International Health Regulations (IHRs) established parameters for event assessments and notifications that may constitute public health emergencies of international concern. These requirements and parameters opened up space for the use of nonofficial mechanisms (such as websites, blogs, and social networks) and technological improvements of communication that can streamline the detection, monitoring, and response to health problems, and thus reduce damage caused by these problems. Specifically, the revised IHR created space for participatory surveillance to function, in a

A brain model of altered self-appraisal in social anxiety disorder.

The brain's default mode network has a central role in the processing of information concerning oneself. Dysfunction in this self-referential processing represents a key component of multiple mental health conditions, particularly social anxiety disorder (SAD). This case-control study aimed to clarify alterations to network dynamics present during self-appraisal in SAD participants. A total of 38 adolescents and young adults with SAD and 72 healthy control participants underwent a self-referential processing fMRI task. The task involved two primary conditions of interest: direct self-appraisal

Banning pre-event rumination in social anxiety: A preliminary randomized trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pre-event rumination has a clear role in maintaining social anxiety according to cognitive models. However, it is unclear what specific strategies can address pre-event rumination for individuals diagnosed with SAD. The current study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a brief intervention on multiple aspects of pre-event rumination, state anxiety and performance and threat appraisals. Additionally, the trajectory of pre-event rumination was investigated over four days. METHODS: Participants with SAD were informed they would be required to complete a speech task

Pilot Study of a Brief WeChat Intervention in China to Increase Students' Willingness to Assist a Flushing Student to Reduce Alcohol Use.

OBJECTIVES: This pilot study tested the effectiveness of a brief alcohol-related intervention delivered by the social media app WeChat to teach about ethanol-induced facial flushing and increase the willingness of students who see another student flushing to suggest that he or she should reduce or stop drinking. In the context of Chinese drinking culture, it is sometimes socially difficult to refuse a drink, even when experiencing physical discomfort, such as flushing. METHODS: Classrooms of students in a medical university in China were randomly assigned to the intervention or control group.

Improving Transition to Employment for Youth With Physical Disabilities: Protocol for a Peer Electronic Mentoring Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Although youth with disabilities have much to gain from employment readiness programs, they are often excluded from or have limited access to vocational programs. One encouraging approach to address gaps in vocational programming is through peer electronic mentoring (e-mentoring), which may facilitate a smoother transition to adulthood by offering support to enhance coping skills. Despite the increase in online communities, little is known about their impact on vocational mentoring for youth with physical disabilities and their parents. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to devel

Exposure to genocide and risk of suicide in Rwanda: a population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: In Rwanda, an estimated one million people were killed during the 1994 genocide, leaving the country shattered and social fabric destroyed. Large-scale traumatic events such as wars and genocides have been linked to endemic post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and suicidality. The study objective was to investigate whether the 1994 genocide exposure is associated with suicide in Rwanda. METHODS: We conducted a population-based case-control study. Suicide victims were matched to three living controls for sex, age and residential location. Exposure was defined as being a genoc

Modifiable lifestyle factors associated with cognitive functioning among college students.

Cognitive health is crucial for lifelong independence, yet public health initiatives often overlook young adults, despite the importance of modifiable lifestyle factors alongside non-modifiable risks like age and genetics. This study investigated the associations between social engagement, diet, physical activity, sleep, and alcohol use, and cognitive task performance in a sample of 126 college students. Participants completed a cognitive battery measuring performance on tasks of executive function indexed by inhibitory control and cognitive set-shifting, working memory, processing speed, verb

Biosignal-based screening of depressive symptoms during affective conversations with virtual humans.

This study investigates psychophysiological biomarkers of depressive symptoms during socially grounded, ecologically valid casual social interactions. Using an AI-based virtual human, 102 adults were recruited; 98 (51% women; 18-59 years) were analyzed after signal-quality screening (40 with depressive symptoms: PHQ-9 ≥10; 58 healthy controls: PHQ-9 ≤9) during six semi-guided, emotion-eliciting conversations. We recorded electroencephalogram (EEG), heart rate variability, galvanic skin response and eye-tracking data. Unimodal and multimodal voting models were evaluated with nested cross-valida

Change in attitudes after a suicide prevention media campaign in the Mid-Norway region.

BACKGROUND: Suicide prevention media campaigns are one way of reaching people at increased suicide risk who would otherwise not seek help. This is the first study of a Norwegian campaign directed both at individuals at risk for suicide and at their social network. METHODS: We evaluated a media campaign consisting of outdoor posters, feature articles, film clips, and online banners in print, digital, and social media spread across the Mid-Norway region in late autumn 2022. This campaign material consisted of information about how to seek help for suicide thoughts and mental health problems and
