INTRODUCTION: While social capital can prevent diabetes, these benefits can be heterogeneous with respect to socioeconomic status. We investigated the association between social capital and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) while examining effect modification by household income.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis using the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study carried out between July 2013 and March 2017. Social capital (mutual aid, social trust, informal social control, collective action) and covariates were self-reported, while

OBJECTIVES: We examined the association between social frailty and depressive symptoms among community-dwelling older adults during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Additionally, we investigated whether home exercise habits moderated the impact of social frailty on depressive symptoms.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1,103 community-dwelling older adults (54.0% female, mean age [standard deviation] = 81.1 [5.0] years) from a semi-urban area of Japan who completed a mailed questionnaire survey in October 2020. Social frailty status was categorized as non-social frailty, pre-

This is the last of a series of four papers, here focussing on schizophrenia, which report followup data up to 18 months from a randomized clinical trial of a psychoeducational family intervention (IFI), which was added to medication and limited to the inpatient phase of treatment, after which post-hospital care was not controlled. Our data suggested that patients with poor prehospital functioning (i.e., the chronic patients) may benefit from inpatient family intervention, but this therapeutic effect appears to be limited to females and does not appear until 18 months postadmission. Social determinants of health (SDoH) play important roles not only in a patient's health status but also in access to palliative care, the family's decision-making process, and the formation of patient values and preferences. In this scoping review, we analyze the social determinants that influence palliative care decision-making and examine the relationship between palliative care decisions and SDoH in the intensive care unit (ICU). We conducted a literature search of five databases including the search terms "Intensive care units," "palliative care," and "social determinants of health." The

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the relationship between sarcopenia and the trajectories of depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults and verified the mediating role of social participation.
METHOD: The sample included 1832 participants aged ≥ 60 years from five waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The optimal trajectory class of depressive symptoms was identified using the latent growth mixture model (LGMM). The association between sarcopenia and the trajectories of depressive symptoms was assessed by multinomial logistic regression. The potential media

Research demonstrates that stigma and resilience influence transgender peoples' healthcare use. Less is known about transgender Latinas in the U.S. South who face multilevel barriers to healthcare access. We used baseline data from the ChiCAS intervention study. Using logistic regression, we examined how stigma (perceived discrimination related to gender identity, race/ethnicity, sexual behavior and perceived documentation status and internalized transphobia), and resilience (ethnic group pride and social support) are associated with two healthcare outcomes (use of routine medical care and med

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to examine associations among measures of stress, social support, and symptoms at midlife. Specifically, the study examined whether support buffered against the negative effects of stress on severity of symptoms grouped via factor analyses into emotional instability, vaso-somatic symptoms, mood disturbances, and aches and pains.
METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from n = 119 women aged 40-55 in Nagaland, India. Midlife symptoms were measured with the help of questionnaires, and factor analysis was used to identify latent factors. Stress and social suppo

Stress and low socioeconomic status in humans confer increased vulnerability to morbidity and mortality. However, this association is not me … s on lifespan and disease of aging. These data highlight a conserved role for social stress and low social status on shortening lifespan and increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease in mammals and identify a potential mechanistic link for this complex phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: In developed countries, perinatal death is known to cause major emotional and social effects on mothers. However, little is known about these effects in low income countries which bear the brunt of perinatal mortality burden. This paper reports the impact of perinatal death on psychological status and social consequences among mothers in a rural area of Bangladesh.
METHODS: A total of 476 women including 122 women with perinatal deaths were assessed with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS-B) at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum, and followed up for negative social conseq

It has been widely reported that adolescent mothers are more likely to experience poor pregnancy outcome, especially low-birth-weight and/or premature infants. Recent data suggest that this poor outcome may be attributed to confounding health and social characteristics of adolescent mothers. A study of maternal health and neonatal development at Boston City Hospital provided an opportunity to assess whether adolescent mothers deliver infants with poorer outcomes at birth than nonadolescents independent of numerous social and health differences between adolescent and nonadolescent mothers. Impaired social behavior is a common feature of many psychiatric disorders, in particular with substance abuse disorders. Switching the preference of the substance-dependent individual toward social interaction activities remains one of the major challenges in drug dependence therapy. However, social interactions yield to the emergence of social ranking. In this review, we provide an overview of the studies that examined how social status can influence the dopaminergic mesolimbic system and how drug-seeking behavior is affected. Generally, social dominance is associated with an increase in dop…

Poor social skills and behavioral problems are a major component of ADHD. The different explanations offered so far, such as cognitive deficits and deficient self regulation, have not been able fully to account for the various aspects of the social dysfunction, suggesting that other mechanisms might underlay this impairment. Our study sought to assess the emotion recognition of Israeli boys at risk of ADHD, and to evaluate its associations with their social skills. A group of 111 boys (grades 4 and 5) were assigned to an At-risk (n=50) and a control (n=61) group based on their scores in an ADH

BACKGROUND: Little is known about social anxiety in MS.
OBJECTIVE: We estimated the prevalence of social anxiety symptoms and their association with demographic and clinical features in a clinic-attending sample of patients with MS.
METHODS: Patients attending the Dalhousie MS Research Unit for regularly scheduled visits completed the Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the Health Utilities Index (HUI). Neurological disability was determined by ratings on the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS).
RESULTS: A total of 251 patients completed

A causal model based on Lazarus' (1966) cognitively oriented theory of psychological stress and coping was tested in a functionally disabled population to determine the effects of social support variables, threat appraisal, and coping responses on coping effectiveness. Social support variables (perceived availability of social support, perceived effectiveness of social support, and personal constraints to the use of social support) were hypothesized to effect coping responses both directly and through the variable of threat appraisal. Coping responses (use of social support, cognitive reapprai

Disclosure of HIV serostatus is critical in managing the health and well-being of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), yet the decision to disclose is shaped by complex interpersonal and contextual factors. The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of HIV status disclosure and social support, and to characterize disclosure networks among a cohort of PLWHA in Kenya. We conducted a cross-sectional egocentric social network analysis of 174 PLWHA and their network members to examine whether characteristics of participants (egos), their networks, and network members (alters) were associated

Migrant populations have always been vulnerable to a high burden of social exclusion, mental disorders, physical illnesses, and economic crises. The current COVID-19 pandemic has further created a frantic plight among them, particularly for undocumented migrant workers in the global south. We have conducted a mixed method study among the undocumented Myanmar migrant workers (UMMWs) in Thailand to explore how the COVID-19 disruption has impacted their mental health and what coping strategies they have adopted. Following the onset of COVID-19 and the recent coup d'état in Myanmar, our current st

INTRODUCTION: Sexual health is influenced by a myriad of social factors including health care access, social and cultural norms, insurance status, educational level and health literacy, economic status, sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation and behavior. It is pivotal to educate future physicians about these social determinants so that they can work to mitigate the resulting disparities and thereby improve the health of patients and their communities.
METHODS: This 2-hour, large-group session for second-year medical students was first given in the fall of 2017. It included a 1-hour, ca
