Depression mediates the association between insula-frontal functional connectivity and social interaction anxiety.

High rates of comorbidity between depression and anxiety are frequently observed. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between depression and social interaction anxiety using a dimensional approach. The current study aimed to explore the associations between depression and social interaction anxiety with a multivariate approach in a comparably large dataset (n = 194, 95 males). All participants completed a structural and a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan and self-report measures of depression via Beck's Depression Inventory II and social inter

The Role of Cognitive Emotion Regulation for Making and Keeping Friend and Conflict Networks.

We used social network analysis (SNA) to examine how adaptive ER strategies (acceptance, positive reappraisal, refocusing, and putting in perspective) and maladaptive ER strategies (rumination, catastrophizing, self- and other-blame) predict the creation and maintenance of friendship and conflict relationships within a mixed-gender social group. Participants (n = 193, 53% female, M age = 19.4 years, 62.1% White) reported on emotion regulation, friendship, and conflict nominations at two time points. Stochastic actor-oriented models revealed that similarity in endorsement of adaptive ER strateg

Social determinants of health associated with attitudes towards hearing loss and hearing aids in older adults fitted in a Latin American country: validation of the ALHQ questionnaire into Spanish.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association between certain social determinants of health (i.e. educational level, income, and social support) and attitudes towards hearing loss and hearing aids among older adults with hearing loss fitted in a Latin American country. DESIGN: Older adults were asked about their attitudes towards hearing loss and hearing aids, years of formal education, income, social support, perception of having a hearing disability, and social pressure when using the hearing aid. To do so, we adapted the Attitudes towards Loss of Hearing Questionnaire (S-ALHQ) in

Lesions to the CA2 region of the hippocampus impair social memory in mice.

The function of the CA2 region of the hippocampus is poorly understood. Although the CA1 and CA3 regions have been extensively studied, for years the CA2 region has primarily been viewed as a linking area between the two. However, the CA2 region is known to have distinct neurochemical and structural features that are different from the other parts of the hippocampus and in recent years it has been suggested that the CA2 region may play a role in the formation and/or recall of olfactory-based memories needed for normal social behavior. Although this hypothesis has been supported by hippocampal

Social interaction in young children with inflicted and accidental traumatic brain injury: relations with family resources and social outcomes.

Core social interaction behaviors were examined in young children 0-36 months of age who were hospitalized for accidental (n = 61) or inflicted (n = 64) traumatic brain injury (TBI) in comparison to typically developing children (n = 60). Responding to and initiating gaze and joint attention (JA) were evaluated during a semi-structured sequence of social interactions between the child and an examiner at 2 and 12 months after injury. The accidental TBI group established gaze less often and had an initial deficit initiating JA that resolved by the follow-up. Contrary to expectation, children wit

The developmental psychopathology of social anxiety in adolescents.

To evaluate a developmental psychopathology approach for understanding adolescent social anxiety, parent-reported predictors of social anxiety were examined in a nonclinical sample of adolescents. Structured diagnostic interviews were obtained from biological parents of 770 participants. Potential risk factors assessed included child characteristics: negative affect, shyness, separation anxiety disorder, and childhood chronic illness, as well as parent characteristics: major depression, panic disorder, and agoraphobia. Adolescent social anxiety was measured multiple times during high school. F

Depression and social functioning in general hospital in-patients.

Impairment of social functioning is often associated with depression and contributes to an unfavorable course of the disease. Although it must be suspected that both social maladaptation and depression could obstruct recovery from somatic diseases, little attention has been paid to their interaction in general hospital patients. To assess social integration in depressive and psychiatrically healthy general hospital in-patients, 250 patients were studied with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), a structured clinical interview, and the Social Interview Schedule (SIS). From c

Factors Associated with ART Adherence and Sustained Viral Suppression Among US Young Adults with HIV, 2015-2022.

US young adults with HIV (YAWH) face service accessibility, social, and structural challenges and are less likely to be adherent to antiretroviral therapy (ART) and achieve sustained viral suppression (SVS) than older adults. We examined factors associated with ART adherence and SVS among US YAWH aged 18-24 years taking ART using data from the 2015-2022 cycles of Medical Monitoring Project. We reported weighted prevalences of 100% ART dose adherence over the past 30 days and SVS over the past 12 months with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We estimated prevalence ratios (PRs) to assess associat

Disadvantaged children in rural communities in the United States: A concept analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the concept of disadvantaged children in rural communities (DCRC). METHOD: A concept analysis was conducted using Walker and Avant's eight-stage method. A rapid review of U.S.-based literature published between 2021 and 2025 was completed. Nineteen articles met inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Social Determinants of Health framework guided data extraction and synthesis to identify defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents of DCRC. RESULTS: The analysis revealed substantial variability in how DCRC is defined and operationalized across s

Causes of medical disputes in China and Japan from physicians' perspectives: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Medical disputes and strained doctor-patient relationships (DPRs) remain pressing challenges in China. This comparative qualitative study examined Chinese and Japanese doctors' perspectives on the causes of medical disputes to identify context-specific factors, elucidate causal mechanisms, and inform strategies for improvement. METHOD: Using purposive sampling, 20 practicing physicians from each country were recruited primarily through the authors' personal networks. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and qualitative descriptive analysis was used to identify categories and

Barriers to healthcare utilization among adults engaging in heavy drinking: Results from the All of Us research program.

OBJECTIVE: We examined sociodemographic factors associated with barriers to healthcare utilization (HCU) among a national sample of adults engaging in heavy drinking behavior (HDB). METHODS: A sample of 3257 participants from the All of Us program (2018-2022 Controlled Tier Dataset-v7) who reported HDB (i.e., six or more drinks on one occasion, at least weekly) was selected to examine the associations between socio-demographic factors and barriers to HCU (i.e., structural, competing social roles, attitudinal, and financial barriers). Multiple logistic regressions estimated adjusted Odds Ratio

Structural and functional brain-wide alterations in A350V Iqsec2 mutant mice displaying autistic-like behavior.

IQSEC2 is an X-linked gene that is associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disability, and epilepsy. IQSEC2 is a postsynaptic density protein, localized on excitatory synapses as part of the NMDA receptor complex and is suggested to play a role in AMPA receptor trafficking and mediation of long-term depression. Here, we present brain-wide structural volumetric and functional connectivity characterization in a novel mouse model with a missense mutation in the IQ domain of IQSEC2 (A350V). Using high-resolution structural and functional MRI, we show that animals with the A350

Community perceptions of the socio-economic structural context influencing HIV and TB risk, prevention and treatment in a high prevalence area in the era of antiretroviral therapy.

Following calls for targeted HIV prevention interventions in so-called "hotspots", we explored subjective perceptions of community members in places considered to be high HIV and tuberculosis (TB) transmission areas and those with low prevalence. Although more people now have access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), some areas are still experiencing high HIV transmission rates, presenting a barrier to the elimination of HIV. A rapid qualitative assessment approach was used to access a sample of 230 people who contributed narratives of their experiences and perceptions of transmission, treatment

Examining Valued Social Participation of Disabled Older Adults Through the Frameworks of Critical Gerontology and Critical Disability Studies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The importance of social participation for older adults has been well articulated. Missing from this discourse is a critical consideration of how social participation is shaped by political, economic, and social contexts that marginalize aging and disabled bodies. We bridge this gap by applying critical gerontology and critical disability frameworks to our analysis of how access to health and social services and individual and environmental factors are associated with engagement in valued social activities among disabled older adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Us

Structural Insights into Protein Mutations Related to Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Systematic Review.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a multifaceted neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulties in social interactions and communication, alongside repetitive behaviors and restricted interests. Its etiology is a complex etiology involving genetic, environmental, and epigenetic factors, with significant contributions from mutations in synaptic proteins, including neuroligins (NLGNs), neurexins (NRXNs), and SHANK family proteins. Structural changes caused by mutations in these proteins can lead to synaptic dysfunction, disrupt scaffolding, and impact neuronal circuitry, which reflec

The impact of the program structure at Hannover Medical School on academic success in medical studies.

Aim: The classical course structure for medicine in Germany is separated by three sections of the medical state examination. This structure is generally regarded as sensible and unchangeable. Because the special program structure at Hannover Medical School (MHH) has one integrated, rather than two separate study blocks, it is possible to examine the influence of structural modifications on the study success of different admission groups. Methods: The data was obtained from students admitted to the MHH between 2006 and 2008 in different admission quotas. Study success was defined as the success

"I do the she and her": A qualitative exploration of HIV care providers' considerations of trans women in gender-specific HIV care.

OBJECTIVES: Women of all genders, including cisgender (cis) and transgender (trans) women, experience social and structural drivers of HIV inequities and pervasive barriers to HIV care. Yet, little is known about how HIV care providers address gender diversity in health care. Through a critical feminist lens informed by intersectionality theory, medical anthropology, and critical sociology, we explored (1) how do HIV care providers describe women living with HIV's care needs and barriers; (2) what are their perspectives on optimal HIV care for women; and (3) to what extent do these conceptuali

Clarifying the association of social anxiety with cognitive variables: The role of self-esteem, self-perception, fears of positive and negative evaluation, and post-event processing.

Theoretical models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) have identified several cognitive factors (fear of negative evaluation [FNE], self-perception, self-esteem, and post-event processing [PEP]) that play a role in the maintenance of the disorder. The current study aimed at testing both the cognitive factors addressed in these different models and the fear of positive evaluation (FPE) in the same construct. A non-clinical emerging adulthood sample (N = 325) were subjected to structural equation modeling (SEM). The results of the SEM showed that FPE, FNE, and self-concepts (self-esteem and self-p

Does mothers' perception of social support mediate the relationship between fecal incontinence and quality of life of the child?

PURPOSE: Fecal incontinence is a common problem in children and adolescents with anorectal malformation (ARM) and may negatively impact psycho-social well-being. Mothers' perception of social support has been proved to contribute to children's quality of life (QOL). Considering ARM studies, the role of family and social resources have received little attention. The aim of the present study was to analyze whether mothers' perception of social support mediates the impact of child fecal incontinence on his/her QOL. METHODS: One hundred and nine mothers with a child born with ARM (aged 6-15 years
