This study investigated the effects of incubation delay on the rate of recovery of common pediatric pathogens from blood culture bottles. Known concentrations of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae type b (three isolates each) were inoculated into BACTEC NR-6A bottles with 1.0 mL of donor blood. Tin, silver and tungsten constitute serious threat to the health of the employees of Polish industry. As no standard methods for determinati … nnous chloride, followed by assessing the tungsten complex, pre-extracted with izoamyl, alcohol, by spectrophotometry at lambda = 405 nm. This method enables determination of 1 mg/m3 tungsten. The results are affected only by the presence of Mo in quantities exceeding 4 mg/m3 and Al in quantities exceeding 2 mg/m3.

Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection was optimized for the simultaneous separation and quantification of nine organic mercury compounds: methyl-, ethyl-, phenyl-, methoxyethyl-, ethoxyethyl-, benzoic and tolylmercury, mersalylic acid and nitromersol. A high performance liquid chromatographic method with diode-array detection (HPLC/DAD) for simultaneous screening of 25 antidepressants is presented. After single-step liquid-liquid extraction at pH9.5 using chloroform/2-propanol/n-heptane (60/14/26, v/v), the substances are eluted on a Novapak C18 4-microns column (300 x 3.9 mm, id), with methanol/tetrahydrofuran/pH 2.6 phosphate buffer (65/5/30, v/v) as the mobile phase (flow rate 0.8 ml/min). P-aminophenol is considered a minor nephrotoxic metabolite of phenacetin and acetaminophen (paracetamol) in man. Our experiments show that p-aminophenol readily undergoes oxidative polymerization during incubation in human blood or plasma, to form melanin, as a component of soluble lipofuscin. Haemolysis accompanies this process in whole blood. Unmetabolized phenacetin and acetaminophen do not form soluble lipofuscins. Long-term excessive use of phenacetin or acetaminophen has been associated with chronic renal disease, haemolytic anaemia, and increased solid lipofuscin deposition in tissues.

The diabetogenic agent, alloxan, is a hydrophilic and chemically unstable compound. The logarithm of the octanol/water partition coefficient of alloxan was found to be -1.86; its half-life at pH 7.4 and 37 degrees in phosphate buffer was 1.5 min. To evaluate the air pollution in operating rooms when anesthesia is carried out with an open-circuit anesthesia delivery system, two analyzers were tested both in the laboratory and in an operating room. The TIF 5500, a laptop instrument, allows the detection of gas with low ionisation potential such as chloro-fluorocarbons (lower detection threshold: 3 ppm). The Bruel & Kjaer 1302 allows the simultaneous determination of the concentrations of the different inhalation anesthetics in the room by photoacoustic spectrometry. For this type of study, the latter proved an excellent instrument.

Based on an extension of Vierordt's method and in continuation of earlier work, the simultaneous analysis of a ternary mixture of meclozine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride and caffeine is discussed. Using 0.01 M methanolic sodium hydroxide as the solvent, the absorbance of the solution of the mixture is recorded at 230, 273 and 307 nm. The concentration of each component is determined by the solution of three simultaneous equations.

A sensitive reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of labetalol has been developed. A mobile phase consisting of citrate buffer (pH 6.5), acetonitrile and 2-propanol and an RP-8 column were used. The sensitivity of the fluorescence detection was enhanced to 1 ng/ml of labetalol in plasma by optimizing the emitted light. General guidelines for optimization of fluorescence detection are discussed.

Buffered solid dosage forms containing aspirin, magnesium hydroxide, and aluminum hydroxide are blended with acidic ethanol to extract the aspirin and salicylic acid rapidly. The resulting preparation is then immediately injected onto a 4.6 mm x 3 cm 5 micron reverse-phase column. Aspirin and free salicylic acid are determined simultaneously. The run time is less than 2 min. The total time from the initiation of sample extraction to completion of the separation is less than 5 min.

During two periods of investigation, at an interval of five years, samples of 333 livers of cows of known origin were collected in the Netherlands. The concentrations of copper were analysed approximately in 0.5 g of dry matter by acid incineration and atomic absorption spectrophotometry.
