Associations between diaphragm contractility and unilateral drop landing kinetics in individuals with bilateral recurrent lateral ankle sprains.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent lateral ankle sprains (LAS) are linked to neuromuscular and respiratory impairments, including reduced diaphragm contractility and altered landing mechanics. These deficits related to recurrent LAS may contribute to compromised ankle joint stability and increased risk of recurrent injury. However, no studies have explored the associations between diaphragm function and landing kinetics. This study aimed to examine the associations between diaphragm contractility, peak ground reaction force (GRF), and loading rate during a unilateral drop-landing task in individuals with

Electronic Method (Pro-Kin) for Improving and Speeding Up the Recovery After Ankle Sprain.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Ankle sprains, very common injuries occurred especially during sports activities, are mainly caused by indirect trauma, which influences exaggerated stress exceeding the strength of stabilization mechanisms. Up to 85% of such injuries result from a sudden flexion and inversion of the foot. In this study, we analyzed the effectiveness of the platform Pro-kin, an innovative system that has given us the possibility to combine the functionality of the older proprioceptive boards with very accurate software in order to improve and accelerate the recovery after ankle injuri

Structural connectome differences in pediatric mild traumatic brain and orthopedic injury.

Sophisticated network-based approaches such as structural connectomics may help to detect a biomarker of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in children. This study compared the structural connectome of children with mTBI or mild orthopedic injury (OI) to that of typically developing (TD) children. Children aged 8-16.99 years with mTBI (n = 83) or OI (n = 37) were recruited from the emergency department and completed 3T diffusion MRI 2-20 days postinjury. TD children (n = 39) were recruited from the community and completed diffusion MRI. Graph theory metrics were calculated for the binarized av

Platelet-Rich Plasma.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a promising treatment for musculoskeletal maladies and clinical data to date have shown that PRP is safe. However, evidence of its efficacy has been mixed and highly variable depending on the specific indication. Additional future high-quality large clinical trials will be critical in shaping our perspective of this treatment option. The heterogeneity of PRP preparations, both presently and historically, leads sweeping recommendations about its utility impossible to make. This heterogeneity has also made interpreting existing literature more complicated.

Active Ankle Circumduction to Identify Mobility Deficits in Subacute Ankle Sprain Patients.

Assessment of ankle mobility is complex and of clinical relevance after an ankle sprain. This study develops and tests a biomechanical model to assess active ankle circumduction and its reliability. The model was then applied to compare individuals' ankle mobility between injured and noninjured ankles after a sprain episode. Twenty patients with subacute unilateral ankle sprain were assessed at 4 weeks and 10 weeks after the injury. They underwent a clinical exam and an ankle circumduction test during which the kinematics were recorded with an optoelectronic device. A biomechanical model was a

Normal Anatomy and Traumatic Injury of the Midtarsal (Chopart) Joint Complex: An Imaging Primer.

The midtarsal (Chopart) joint complex consists of the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints and their stabilizing ligaments. Detailed assessment of this complex at MRI can be challenging owing to frequent anatomic variation and the small size of the structures involved. Nevertheless, a wide spectrum of pathologic conditions affect the joint complex, and its imaging evaluation deserves more thorough consideration. This review focuses on MRI evaluation of normal ligamentous anatomy and common variations about the Chopart joint, presenting practical imaging tips and potential diagnostic pitfall

Preventing recurrent ankle sprains: Is the use of an App more cost-effective than a printed Booklet? Results of a RCT.

Recurrent ankle sprains can be reduced by following a neuromuscular training (NMT) program via a printed Booklet or a mobile application. Regarding the high incidence of ankle sprains, cost-effectiveness regarding implementation can have a large effect on total societal costs. In this economic analysis, we evaluated whether the method of implementing a proven effective NMT program using an App or a Booklet resulted in differences in injury incidence rates leading to costs and hence to differences in cost-effectiveness. In total, 220 athletes with a previous ankle sprain were recruited for this

Protection from Muscle Damage in the Absence of Changes in Muscle Mechanical Behavior.

INTRODUCTION: The repeated bout effect characterizes the protective adaptation after a single bout of unaccustomed eccentric exercise that induces muscle damage. Sarcomerogenesis and increased tendon compliance have been suggested as potential mechanisms for the repeated bout effect by preventing muscle fascicles from being stretched onto the descending limb of the length-tension curve (the region where sarcomere damage is thought to occur). In this study, evidence was sought for three possible mechanical changes that would support either the sarcomerogenesis or the increased tendon compliance
