Flexible Non-Enzymatic Glucose Sensors via Electrospray Reduction of Copper Nanoparticles on Laser-Induced Graphene.

Non-enzymatic glucose sensors have the advantages of low cost, high sensitivity, stability, and good shelf life. The porous laser-induced graphene (LIG) on flexible substrates obtained by a simple fabrication process shows good conductivity and porous morphology advantageous for sensing. Herein, flexible and non-enzymatic glucose biosensors are fabricated based on a composite of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) anchored on LIG. The fabrication process involved a non-contact, simple, and cost-effective electrospray reduction (ESR) deposition technology, where an aqueous copper ion solution serves a

Development and validation of a deep learning markerless system for lower-limb kinematics in hip and knee osteoarthritis population.

With the advancement of deep learning technology, markerless systems have emerged as a cost-effective and user-friendly alternative to marker-based systems. However, most existing markerless systems are developed using datasets from healthy individuals, which limits their generalizability to patient populations. Therefore, this study developed a four-camera markerless system using a dataset of patients with osteoarthritis and validated its measurement accuracy in lower-limb kinematics. A total of 150 patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis were allocated to a training set (n = 120) and a test

A Comparative Analysis of Computed Tomography, Photogrammetry, and Structured Light Scanning for Biological Sex Estimation in Forensic Anthropology - A Review.

Advanced scanning techniques are increasingly used to aid in forensic human identification by enabling rapid and non-destructive documentation of remains, and permitting measurements not possible on dry bone. However, to ensure that the results achieved are reliable, methods must be rigoursly tested and validated. By reviewing relevant literature, this paper compares the use of three popular advanced imaging techniques used to aid forensic human identification - computed tomography (CT), structured light scanning (SLS), and photogrammetry - with a focus on biological sex estimation from 3D ren

Developing Low-Cost Mobile Device and Apps for Accurate Skin Spectrum Measurement via Low-Cost Spectrum Sensors and Deep Neural Network Technology.

In recent years, skin spectral information has been gradually applied in various fields, such as the cosmetics industry and clinical medicine. However, the high price and the huge size of the skin spectrum measurement device make the related applications of the skin spectrum unable to be widely used in practical applications. We used convolutional neural network (CNN) to achieve a satisfying accuracy of the Fitzpatrick skin-type classification by using a simple self-developed device in 2018. Leveraging on the hardware, firmware, and software app-developing experience, a low-cost miniature skin

Water quality as an economic barrier to photocatalytic green hydrogen production.

Photocatalytic water splitting has emerged as a promising technology for sustainable green hydrogen production because it directly converts solar energy into chemical energy under mild operating conditions. Although extensive research has focused on developing highly efficient photocatalysts, cocatalysts, and charge-transfer strategies, the influence of water quality on photocatalytic hydrogen production remains comparatively underexplored. In practical applications, hydrogen generation is expected to utilize a wide range of water resources, including freshwater, groundwater, seawater, municip

Identification of needs for an assistive robotic arm in individuals with tetraplegia: a mixed-methods approach.

BACKGROUND: A severe spinal cord injury (SCI) can profoundly affect an individual's physical abilities and social independence. For individuals living with tetraplegia, an assistive robotic arm offers the potential to restore some autonomy and reduce the need for constant assistance. However, current assistive technologies are often costly, impractical, and fail to meet the needs of those affected. This leads to high rates of abandonment and user frustration with the technology. The aim of this study was to identify the needs and expectations of both individuals with tetraplegia and their care

Artificial Intelligence Models for the Detection of Microsatellite Instability from Whole-Slide Imaging of Colorectal Cancer.

With the advent of whole-slide imaging (WSI), a technology that can digitally scan whole slides in high resolution, pathology is undergoing a digital revolution. Detecting microsatellite instability (MSI) in colorectal cancer is crucial for proper treatment, as it identifies patients responsible for immunotherapy. Even though universal testing for MSI is recommended, particularly in patients affected by colorectal cancer (CRC), many patients remain untested, and they reside mainly in low-income countries. A critical need exists for accessible, low-cost tools to perform MSI pre-screening. Here,

Use of 3D Printing Technology to Create a Canine Simulator for Cerebrospinal Fluid Sampling at the Lumbar Subarachnoid Space.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sampling at the lumbar subarachnoid space (LSS) is technically challenging to learn. Currently, training relies on cadaver availability or performance in a clinical scenario. This study aims to develop and validate a low-cost, high-fidelity simulator to train in this technique. Using three-dimensional printing technology, a model of a healthy adult dog's lumbosacral vertebral column was produced. The model was augmented with synthetic materials and a fluidic system to replicate all procedural steps and permit successful CSF collection. The simulator was validated by f

Low axillary sampling in clinically node-negative operable breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Targeted sentinel node biopsy has been extensively validated. It has been incorporated into standard guidelines for axillary prediction in women with clinically node-negative operable breast cancer. However, the high cost of the gamma probe and the need for radiocolloid have limited its widespread acceptance in developing countries. We aimed to validate low axillary sampling as a reliable alternative method to sentinel node biopsy in a developing country. METHODS: An anatomically guided low axillary sampling removes the lower level I axillary fat with lymph nodes and the method wa

Harnessing cell size to separate genetically and functionally distinct dental pulp-derived mesenchymal stromal cell subpopulations.

BACKGROUND: Dental pulp-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (DPMSCs) represent a promising avenue for regenerative medicine. However, the therapeutic potency of DPMSCs is substantially influenced by their functional heterogeneity emerging during ex vivo expansion. Therefore, identifying and selecting the most potent subpopulation of DPMSCs following expansion is key to improving therapeutic efficacy and consistency. Nevertheless, conventional methods for isolating stem cell subpopulations are largely impractical for clinical-scale bioprocessing, primarily due to their high cost and limited throu

A simple tool to identify asian women at increased risk of osteoporosis.

Patients with low bone mineral density (BMD) have a high risk of future fractures, and should be actively considered for treatment to reduce their risk. However, BMD measurements are not widely available in some communities, because of cost and lack of equipment. Simple questionnaires have been designed to help target high-risk women for BMD measurements, thereby avoiding the cost of measuring women at low risk. However, such tools have previously focused on evaluation of non-Asian women. We collected information about numerous risk factors from postmenopausal Asian women in eight countries in

How "community" matters for how people interact with information: mixed methods study of young men who have sex with other men.

BACKGROUND: We lack a systematic portrait of the relationship between community involvement and how people interact with information. Young men who have sex with men (YMSM) are a population for which these relationships are especially salient: their gay community involvement varies and their information technology use is high. YMSM under age 24 are also one of the US populations with the highest risk of HIV/AIDS. OBJECTIVE: To develop, test, and refine a model of gay community involvement (GCI) factors in human-information interaction (HII) as applied to HIV/AIDS information among YMSM, speci
