Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption in a third upper molar: clinical, tomographic and histological analysis.

Radiolucent or hypodense lesions in the crown of unerupted teeth may be due to pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption. Clinicians must be aware of this risk so that they can diagnose and appropriately treat this condition. The purpose of this study is to present a well-documented clinical case of pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption in an impacted third upper left molar of a 63 year old female patient. This was an unexpected finding, which occurred after cone-beam computed tomography was used to investigate the first upper left molar, which had an acute periradicular abscess. A multidisciplinary

Dens evaginatus on occlusal surface of maxillary second molar: a case report.

Dens evaginatus is a rare dental anomaly characterized by the development of a tubercle on the occlusal surface of the tooth and can cause pulpitis, pulp necrosis, and periapical periodontitis due to tubercular fracture or attrition. Unlike with caries, pain caused by dens evaginatus may manifest itself in a distant location. Therefore, diagnosing the cause of that pain may prove problematic. Dens evaginatus usually occurs in the mandibular premolars. We report a successfully treated case in which dens evaginatus was difficult to diagnose due to distant radiation of pulpitis-induced pain. This

Histological comparison of pulpal inflammation in primary teeth with occlusal or proximal caries.

OBJECTIVE: A number of clinical and histological studies have investigated caries-related changes in the primary tooth pulp, but the effect of caries site, as a clinical variable, has not been previously considered. This study sought to compare inflammatory changes within the pulp of primary molars according to the location of the caries lesion (occlusal or proximal). METHODS: Eighty-three primary molars were extracted under general anaesthesia for caries and/or orthodontic reasons, and were split immediately after removal and fixed in 10% formalin. Teeth were then decalcified, sectioned, and

Intracoronal lightening of discolored pulpless teeth: a modified walking bleach technique.

Intracoronal bleaching of pulpless discolored teeth is a valuable treatment modality currently disregarded by many clinicians because of the potentially disastrous consequence of cervical resorption. A patient-administered, intracoronal carbamide peroxide bleaching technique is described. This modified walking bleach method minimizes the risks because treatment time is reduced to days as opposed to weeks of the original walking bleach protocol; the concentration of the hydrogen peroxide is markedly reduced; and residual hydrogen peroxide is completely eliminated with the use of catalase prior

Factors influencing an eruption of teeth associated with a dentigerous cyst: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A dentigerous cyst (DC) is a pathology embracing the crown of an unerupted tooth at risk of malignant transformation. The causal tooth is usually removed together with the cyst. However, if there are orthodontic contraindications for extraction, two questions arise. (1) Which factors favor spontaneous eruption? (2) Which factors imply the necessity of applying orthodontic traction? This systematic review aimed to identify factors conducive/inconducive to the spontaneous eruption of teeth after dentigerous cyst marsupialization. METHODS: In accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, th

[Oral cavity features in patients suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta].

Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a rare hereditary connective tissue disorder. This pathology is characterized by disruption of biosynthesis of Type I collagen, and production of limited amount of defective and imperfect collagens. This causes decrease in bone mass of human body, bones become fragile and brittle, resulting in unreasonable multiple fractures. Reportedly, number of patients with OI ranges between 32-38 in Georgia. However, exact number of patients, including children and their parents, is unknown. Dentinogenesis Imperfecta (DI; DGI) and skeletal malocclusion occupy special place

Influence of artificial aging on the in vitro fracture load of tooth-to-implant-supported fixed partial dentures with different retainer designs.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Tooth-to-implant-supported fixed partial dentures (TI-FPDs) are a valuable treatment option for the shortened dental arch. For naturally healthy abutment teeth or abutment teeth with small restorations, inlays or adhesive wings present - as opposed to complete crowns - minimally invasive FPD retainer elements. Data on TI-FPDs with minimally invasive retainer designs are sparse. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare test forces correlating with fracture (ultimate load, Fu) or formation of initial damage (force at first damage, F1d) and the failure mod

Cephalometric evaluation of maxillary central incisor crown-root morphology in different skeletal malocclusion.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the collum angle (CA) and labial surface angle (LSA) of the maxillary central incisors across different skeletal malocclusion classes and between genders. METHODS: This cross-sectional study screened lateral cephalogram of 504 patients above 18 years seeking for orthodontic consultation. Skeletal classification was based on ANB angle, Wits appraisal and Beta angle; Class II cases were further divided by maxillary incisor inclination to the SN plane. Landmarks were digitised using tpsDig, and measurements were obtained via a custom Python script. CA and LSA were compared

Fatigue resistance of 3D printed anatomic post-and-core after mastication simulation.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Rigid post-and-core systems have traditionally been used in the restoration of endodontically treated teeth and are regarded by many as the standard treatment. Flexible materials, including nanoceramic resins, are being increasingly implemented as post-and-core systems, but data supporting their use are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the fatigue resistance of conventional cast metal and nanoceramic 3-dimensionally (3D) printed resin post-and-core systems with teeth without posts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty freshly extracted human m

Influence of post material, post diameter, and substance loss on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth: A laboratory study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The influence of the flexural modulus of prefabricated posts on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of post material and post diameter on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated mandibular premolars. In addition, the influence of tooth substance loss was evaluated by comparing 1 with 2 residual dentinal walls. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty-four extracted mandibular first premolars were endodontically treated and divided into 8 test groups (n=8) based on the

Influence of glass fiber posts on the fracture susceptibility of endodontically treated maxillary anterior teeth with direct veneers: Preliminary results of a randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the influence of glass fiber posts on fracture susceptibility of endodontically treated maxillary anterior teeth with direct veneers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty participants had 1 maxillary anterior tooth restored with a direct veneer. They were divided into 2 groups (n = 25) according to the use of intraradicular glass fiber posts. Clinical evaluation was performed at baseline, 6 and 12 months. The treatment success was determined by the absence of tooth fracture. If there was fracture, it was classified according to

Coronectomy practice. Paper 1. Technique and trouble-shooting.

Coronectomy is a technique that reduces morbidity of the nerve after operation on high-risk mandibular third molars. This two-part paper aims to give an overview of the technique and a description of common problems that can be encountered during and after operation. In this paper we discuss the technique as an overview and then each type of impaction more specifically. We also explore common problems encountered during the procedure and their subsequent management.

Management of periodontal tissues for restorative dentistry.

Proper management of periodontal tissues is required to achieve predictable long-term success with restorative dental procedures. Forced eruption as well as several surgical techniques may be used to achieve and maintain adequate biologic width during restorative and esthetic dental procedures. The technique that will yield optimal results depends on the relationship between the restoration's margins and the surrounding periodontium. A classification system that describes these interrelationships and provides treatment recommendations is included.

Modified distal shoe appliance for the loss of a primary second molar: a case report.

Preservation of primary teeth until their normal exfoliation plays a crucial role in preventive and interceptive dentistry. Premature loss of the primary second molar prior to the eruption of the permanent first molar in the absence of the primary second molar can lead to mesial movement and migration of the permanent molar before and during its eruption. In such cases, an intra-alveolar type of space maintainer to guide the eruption of the permanent first molar is indicated. In certain cases, however, the conventional design is not practical. This paper describes a new design for distal shoe
