Management of Shallow Vestibule with Reduced Attached Gingiva in Fixed Prosthetic Intervention.

Shallow vestibule has long been considered a deterring factor in the use of removable dental prosthetics. The need for management in fixed prosthetic replacement is not widely discussed. Adequate attached gingiva is essential for continued proper oral hygiene. Muscular and fibrous traction leads to gingival recession, which can cause marginal leakage in a fixed prosthetic restoration. In the long-term, this causes the suprastructure to fail and, ultimately, the restoration also fails. Therefore, shallow vestibule with reduced attached gingiva should be identified in the diagnostic stage and sh

Traumatic displacement of a maxillary primary canine tooth into the middle nasal concha presenting as chronic facial pain: a case report.

The case of a 32-year-old woman who sustained a nasal bone fracture and dental trauma at the age of 9 is described in this article. Misdiagnosis of the dental displacement into the middle turbinate at the initial examination led to chronic facial pain. The cause of the pain was incorrectly diagnosed or misinterpreted by several medical specialists, including an otolaryngologist, neurologist, physiatrist, ophthalmologist, internist, radiologist, oral surgeon, dentist, and the patient's family physician. Finally, 23 years after the dental trauma, a multislice computed tomogram revealed that the

Pyogenic granuloma associated with periodontal abscess and bone loss - A rare case report.

A diverse group of the pathologic process can produce the enlargement of soft tissues in the oral cavity and often present a diagnostic challenge. This soft tissue enlargement may represent a variation of the normal anatomic structure, inflammatory reaction, cyst, neoplasm, and developmental anomalies. A group of reactive hyperplasias, which develop in response to chronic recurring tissue injury that stimulates an excessive tissue repair response. The pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a reactive enlargement that is an inflammatory response to local irritation such as calculus, a fractured tooth, roug

Coronectomy of a third molar with cyst lining enucleation in the management of a dentigerous cyst.

UNLABELLED: A dentigerous cyst was treated with enucleation and coronectomy of the associated tooth to minimize the risk of inferior alveolar nerve damage, resulting from direct surgical trauma or indirectly from intra-operative or post-operative jaw fracture. Radiographic monitoring over 33 months confirmed migration of the roots through healed bone and progressive obliteration of the residual pulp canal chamber. These observations are not associated with failure of the technique but are, in fact, commonly observed in successful cases of coronectomy. A brief discussion of the risks versus ben

[Epidural anesthesia for a patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, bronchial asthma and hypothyroidism].

The patient was a 75-year-old male with a history of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), bronchial asthma and hypothyroidism simultaneously. Epidural anesthesia was planned for the open reduction of a femur fracture. CMT is one of the hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies, and there may be no report in Japan that epidural anesthesia was applied to a patient with CMT. It has been suggested that neuromuscular disease is a contraindication to epidural anesthesia, but the patient had such a severe gait disturbance that he might not be able to walk by himself postoperatively without any aggravat

Restorations performance after selective caries removal to soft dentine: 18-month follow-up of a controlled clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled clinical trial aimed to evaluate the clinical performance of composite resin restorations placed after selective caries removal to soft dentin (SCRSD) or stepwise excavation (SW) over an 18-month period. METHODS: Inclusion criteria were patients with permanent molars and/or premolars presenting deep caries lesions (≥50 % of the dentin thickness). Teeth were submitted to SCRSD (n = 76) or SW (n = 76). Evaluations were performed based on FDI (World Dental Federation) criterion. Survival analysis was performed to estimate the survival of restorations and its

Survival, technical and biological outcome of fixed tooth- and implant-supported restorations: A retrospective analysis of a patient cohort treated in an undergraduate dental education program.

OBJECTIVES: There is a paucity of data on the outcome of fixed tooth- and implant-supported porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) and ceramic-based (CB) restorations fabricated during undergraduate dental education. Therefore, this retrospective study examined the outcome of fixed restorations placed in patients participating in an undergraduate program. METHODS: Patient records were searched for data on fixed PFM and CB restorations. For these restorations, the functional period in situ and technical and biological complications, namely restoration fracture, decementation, screw loosening, secondar

The Healing of Free Gingival Autografts for Socket-seal Surgery: a Case Report.

Tooth extraction will be followed by marked alterations to the tissue volume, in particular in the anterior zone, which may jeopardize the esthetic outcome of any dental treatment involving tooth extraction. If, however, ridge collapse can eb prevented or minimized after tooth extraction, more predictable outcomes with superior esthetics can be accomplished along with fewer surgical procedures. Therefore, it was proposed that stabilizing the soft tissue architecture with a free gingival graft could minimize the soft tissue shrinkage. The following case report describes some surgical modificati

Endodontic Management Before, During and After Head and Neck Radiotherapy: Biological, Diagnostic and Clinical Considerations in Head and Neck Cancer Patients.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck radiotherapy creates a high-consequence dental environment in which tooth loss may precipitate osteoradionecrosis, particularly after extraction in high-dose mandibular regions. Tooth preservation through nonsurgical root canal treatment is therefore a risk reduction strategy. However, evidence relevant to endodontic decision-making remains dispersed among clinical series, laboratory research, pulp testing studies and oncology dental guidance. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise contemporary evidence relevant to endodontic management before, during and after head and neck radio

[Sequelae of dental trauma: forensic medical aspects].

Dental trauma is a frequent condition which may occur alone or in combination with craniofacial trauma and/or other injuries. Many factors influence the gravity of the trauma and subsequent prognosis including age, anterior state, trauma etiology, treatment and follow up. In order to establish a prudent provisional or definitive expertise, the medical expert must have a panoramic view of the trauma. Time should be taken to consolidate facts and estimate prejudices on sound evidence. In certain cases outcome can be predicted. The medical expert should provide advice and counselling both for the

Post-traumatic treatment of maxillary incisors by immediate dentoalveolar restoration with long-term follow-up.

Replacing both missing maxillary anterior teeth is particularly challenging, especially in compromised sockets. This case report describes the management of an 18-year-old female patient, who suffered avulsion of both maxillary central incisors at 7 years of age. This multidisciplinary implant technique, called Immediate Dentoalveolar Restoration (IDR), included extraction of the injured teeth and a single procedure for immediate implant placement and restoration of the compromised sockets after root fracture and periapical lesion development were detected during orthodontic treatment. Success

Use of triple antibiotic paste as a disinfectant for a traumatized immature tooth with a periapical lesion: a case report.

Elimination of microbial contamination from the root canal system is a precondition for successful root canal treatment. In this regard, mechanical instrumentation, irrigation, and intracanal medication are all important. This case report assesses the efficacy of a triple antibiotic paste consisting of metronidazole, ciprofloxacin, and minocycline in the disinfection of immature teeth with apical periodontitis. An 8-year-old girl presented at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry for the evaluation of right and left maxillary central incisors with crown fractures and luxation. The right centra

Primary incisor restoration using resin-veneered stainless steel crowns.

The restoration of primary incisors with extensive caries lesions is a clinical challenge of severe dimensions. Not only are these teeth difficult to restore, but the patient's behavior can affect the treatment negatively. Requirements for an acceptable restoration include natural color; durability; adhesive cementation that is biocompatible with the pulp; easily and rapidly placed; requires only one treatment visit. Compared to other options, stainless steel crowns are the easiest to place. The most attractive restoration for these cases today is the adhesively bonded resin-composite crown, m
