We conducted a systematic review to analyse the consistency of nontreponemal-specific tests of Treponema pallidum in cerebrospinal fluid. We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang and Chongqing VIP databases. BACKGROUND: Many human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and syphilis co-infected patients are not diagnosed, which may evolve into asymptomatic neurosyphilis (ANS). We studied the occurrence of ANS an HIV-infected population.

This case presents a 42-year-old homosexual man with weight loss, urticaria type rash, tinnitus/phonophobia, dizziness and blurred vision and scotoma on the left side. Visual acuity was affected and a left papillitis was present. The patient was tested positive for antibodies against Treponoma pallidum. This case illustrates that symptoms of the syphilis disease can come from different organ systems and cross medical specialties. We encourage clinicians to more readily think of syphilis whenever there is a sexual active patient with complaints from different parts of the body.

The relative incidence of latent syphilis, which can only be detected by serological techniques, has continued to increase. As a matter of routine, we use the TPHA test for screening, the FTA-Abs test for confirmation, and the IgM tests to control the therapeutic outcome. Nowadays, neurosyphilis can definitely be detected by serologic procedures, such as the TPHA index.

Analysis by SDS-PAGE of axial filaments of cultivable treponemes showed 3 major bands: a 33/34 kD doublet and a 37 kD polypeptide. In sera from patients with various stages of syphilis, from biological false positive reactors, and from negative controls the most consistent reaction was detected against the doublet, but only sera from patients with primary or secondary syphilis reacted with the 37 kD axial filament polypeptides.
