The purpose of this article is to review the imaging characteristics of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. Skeletal tuberculosis represents one-third of all cases of tuberculosis occurring in extrapulmonary sites. Hematogenous spread from a distant focus elsewhere in the body is the cornerstone in the understanding of imaging features of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. The most common presentations are tuberculous spondylitis, arthritis, osteomyelitis, and soft tissue involvement. The diagnostic value of the different imaging techniques, which include conventional radiography, CT, and MR imaging, are

Tuberculosis is relative uncommon in developed countries. The incidence is still considerable in India, in the Middle East and South America. Neurosurgically important manifestations of tuberculosis are intracranial tuberculomas, tuberculous meningitis with hydrocephalus and tuberculous spondylitis. Therefore experiences in the management of these three kinds of neurotuberculosis are described and an overview of the literature is given. The diagnosis of intracranial tuberculomas is difficult because the symptoms are similar to those of many other types of intracranial tumor and the CT-findings

STUDY DESIGN: Case report, literature review, discussion.
OBJECTIVES: To emphasize the role of the spine as primary source of infection for psoas abscess.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spine-associated psoas abscesses increase with more frequent invasive procedures of the spine and recurring tuberculosis in industrialized countries. Diagnosis is often delayed by misinterpretation as arthritis, joint infection, or urologic or abdominal disorders.
METHODS: We present six cases of psoas abscesses associated with spinal infections that were treated in our hospital from January to December 2001. D

Introduction of specific chemotherapy and vaccination leads to a remarkable recession of renal tuberculosis in the younger age group. Renal tuberculosis is the result of a haematogenous spread of tubercle bacillus. Haematogenous spreading occurs immediately after primary infection, or, in elderly patients, in combination with recurrency of tuberculous foci in lungs and hilar-lymphnodes. Simultaneous metastasis in the skeleton, especially in the vertebrae, are observed in 30%. The incubation period between tuberculous spread and clinical manifestation of renal tuberculosis lasts several years,

Diagnosis of tuberculous spondylodiscitis is difficult because clinical findings usually are nonspecific and radiological features may mimic other bacterial, fungal, inflammatory and neoplastic diseases. We present the first reported case of tuberculous spondylodiscitis in a 56-year-old man successfully treated by rifampicin-containing anti tuberculosis regimen with close follow-up of serum cyclosporine levels.

A case of a rare form of BCG osteomyelitis in the spine is presented. After vaccination, the disease started with a lymphadenitis. Later an abscess extended from the pelvic along the psoas muscles into the retroperitoneum. The soft tissue mass extended paraspinally and epidural involvement was also apparent. The vertebral involvement was detected by CT. The radiological findings are discussed with reference to the literature.

The treatment results relating to 57 patients with neurological signs of osteochondrosis secondary to sustained tuberculous spondylitis with the pain syndrome prevailing in the clinical picture were studied. The majority of the patients (50) had limited affections of 1 or 2-3 adjoining vertebrae and 7 patients had extended processes (4-6 adjoining vertebrae). The treatment procedure was based on manual therapy: hand strength applied to the vertebral column, joints and muscles for eliminating pain and other neurological signs of the disease. The treatment should be complex and differential in r

Electron microscopy of muscle biopsies of patients with paralytic scoliosis and tuberculosis of spines reveals membranous bodies in the myelin sheath of Schwann cells. On the basis of this morphological pattern and indirect biochemical evidence, it is suggested that these bodies were formed by abnormal myelin metabolism.
