A dataset including cases of six otoneurological diseases was analysed using machine learning methods to investigate the classification problem of these diseases and to compare the effectiveness of different methods for this data. Linear discriminant analysis was the best method and next multilayer perceptron neural networks provided that the data was input into a network in the form of principal components. Nearest neighbour searching, k-means clustering and Kohonen neural networks achieved almost as good results as the former, but decision trees slightly worse. Thus, these methods fared well

Symptoms such as vertigo and unsteady gait occur in various diseases and are among the relatively common chief complaints. Even at present, the mechanisms underlying these disorders are unclear. We considered the possibility of peripheral vestibular disorders correlating with lifestyle-related illnesses. Under these circumstances, we assessed correlations of lifestyle-related illness as background factors for peripheral vestibular disorders and associated arteriosclerotic changes. Using carotid ultrasonography, we assessed maximum intima-media thickness (max IMT) and maximum common carotid art

Eye velocity produced by the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) tends to align with the summed vector of gravity and other linear accelerations [gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA)]. Defined as "spatial orientation of the aVOR," we propose that it is controlled by the nodulus and uvula of the vestibulocerebellum. Here, electrical stimulation, injections of the GABAA agonist, muscimol, and single-cell recordings were utilized to investigate this spatial orientation. Stimulation, injection, and recording sites in the nodulus were determined in vivo by MRI and verified in histological section

OBJECTIVE: We sought to quantify and compare angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) gain and compensatory saccade properties elicited by the head impulse test (HIT) in pontine-cerebellar stroke (PCS) and vestibular neuritis (VN).
METHODS: Horizontal HIT was recorded ≤7 days from vertigo onset with dual-search coils in 33 PCS involving the anterior inferior, posterior inferior, and superior cerebellar arteries (13 AICA, 17 PICA, 3 SCA) confirmed by MRI and 20 VN. We determined the aVOR gain and asymmetry, and compensatory overt saccade properties including amplitude asymmetry and cumulative am

CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that migrainous vertigo (MV) has a substantial vestibulo-spinal abnormality that can be uncovered by posturography. Patients with MV also showed a difficulty in using multisystem information, especially somatosensory information. Caloric and sensory organization tests (SOTs) have complementary roles in assessing vestibulo-ocular and vestibulo-spinal function, particularly for Meniere's disease (MD) and MV.
OBJECTIVES: To compare vestibular dysfunction through caloric testing and posturography in patients with MV, MD, and acute vestibular neuritis (VN).

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the age-related effects of vestibular schwannoma (VS) on postural control and whether the postoperative postural strategies differ according to age.
STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal, transversal study.
METHODS: Forty-seven VS patients were split into three groups according to age (group I, 14 patients aged from 30 to 44 years; group II, 21 patients aged from 45 to 59 years; and group III, 12 patients aged from 60 to 75 years). All patients underwent vestibular and posturographic testing shortly before as well as 8 days and 3 months after surgical tumor removal.

OBJECTIVE: To heighten physician awareness of false-negative diffusion-weighted (DW) magnetic-resonance imaging findings in patients with acute cerebellar infarction and the importance of periodically observing nystagmus after symptom onset.
METHODS: Between April 2007 and March 2010, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of eight patients who had all complained of severe isolated vertigo or dizziness, and had visited an emergency department within 2-6h of its onset. Intracranial findings on initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were normal. All patients had consulted our departm

OBJECTIVE: To test the diagnostic accuracy of the horizontal head impulse test (h-HIT) of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) function in distinguishing acute peripheral vestibulopathy (APV) from stroke. Most patients with acute vertigo, nausea/vomiting, and unsteady gait have benign APV (vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis) as a cause. However, some harbor life-threatening brainstem or cerebellar strokes that mimic APV. A positive h-HIT (abnormal VOR) is said to predict APV.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study at an urban, academic hospital over 6 years. Consecutive acute vestibular syndrome patients

Endoscopy offers several distinct advantages over the operating microscope during neuro-otologic surgery that make it an excellent adjunctive tool to the microscope or independent modality during cranial base surgery. The high magnification gives excellent definition of perforating blood vessels, cranial nerves, and neural structures, which in many cases is superior to that achieved with the microscope. Furthermore, the use of angled or flexible endoscopes allows one to look around corners and behind anatomic structures blocking the view seen via a 0 degree microscope. Endoscopy also has the t

Calretinin is a calcium-binding protein related to calbindin-D28k; both are present in different though overlapping sets of neurons in brains of birds and mammals. We describe in detail the pattern of calretinin immunoreactivity in the rat brain. As in chick brain, calretinin immunoreactivity is abundant in various sensory pathways (particularly certain cells and fibres of the cochlear nuclei and olfactory bulb), in the heterogeneous parts of the brainstem and in parts of the hypothalamus. Many primary sensory fibres are strongly positive. Major groups of calretinin-positive neurons also inclu

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-thermal therapeutic modality in which low-intensity red or near-infrared light is used to modulate biological activity. Experimental inner-ear studies report preservation of auditory neurons, attenuation of vestibular injury, improved survival of transplanted stem cells, and changes in otic organoid differentiation. These observations raise the possibility that PBM may influence differentiation-associated cellular states in addition to providing cytoprotection. The classical mechanistic model proposes that photons interact with mitochondrial chromophores, part

In the current study, we investigated the neural mechanisms underlying the representation of three-dimensional (3D) surface orientation within the posterior portion of the superior temporal polysensory area (STPp) and the visual posterior Sylvian area (VPS) in the macaque brain. Both areas are known for their integration of visual and vestibular signals, which are crucial for visual stability and spatial perception. However, it remains unclear how exactly these areas represent the orientation of 3D surfaces. To tackle this question, we used random dot stereograms (RDS) to present 3D planar sti

Background: The clinical profiles of MNDs are dominated by inexorable motor decline, but subclinical proprioceptive, nociceptive and somatosensory deficits may also exacerbate mobility, dexterity, and bulbar function. While extra-motor pathology and frontotemporal involvement are widely recognised in motor neuron diseases (MNDs), reports of sensory involvement are conflicting. The potential contribution of sensory deficits to clinical disability is not firmly established and the spectrum of sensory manifestations is poorly characterised. Methods: A systematic review was conducted to examine th

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: In patients with acute vestibular syndrome (AVS), differentiating between stroke and nonstroke causes is challenging in the emergency department (ED). Correct diagnosis of vertigo etiology is essential for early optimum treatment and disposition.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to summarize the published evidence on the potential of blood biomarkers in the diagnosis and differentiation of peripheral from central causes of AVS.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted for studies published until January 1, 2023, in PubMed, Ovid Me

Crocodilians (alligators, crocodiles, and gharials) are the closet living relatives to birds and, as such, represent a key clade to understand the evolution of the avian brain. However, many aspects of crocodilian neurobiology remain unknown. In this paper, we address an important knowledge gap as there are no published studies of cerebellar connections in any crocodilian species. We used injections of retrograde tracers into the cerebellum of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) to describe for the first time the origin of climbing and mossy fiber inputs. We found that inputs t

With the development of the sequencing technique, more than 40 repeat expansion diseases (REDs) have been identified during the past two decades. Moreover, the clinical features of these diseases show some commonality, and the nervous system, especially the cognitive function was affected in part by these diseases. However, the specific cognitive domains impaired in different diseases were inconsistent. Here, we survey literature on the cognitive consequences of the following disorders presenting cognitive dysfunction and summarizing the pathogenic genes, epidemiology, and different domains af
