Malaria epidemiology and control in Southern Africa.

The burden of malaria has decreased dramatically within the past several years in parts of sub-Saharan Africa, following the scale-up of int … cology and parasite genomics using three contrasting settings of malaria transmission in Zambia and Zimbabwe: an area of successful malaria control, an area of resurgent malaria and an area where interventions have not been effective. The Southern Africa ICEMR will capitalize on the opportunity to investigate the complexities of malaria transmission while …

Strategies for antiviral stockpiling for future influenza pandemics: a global epidemic-economic perspective.

Influenza pandemics present a global threat owing to their potential mortality and substantial economic impacts. Stockpiling antiviral drugs to manage a pandemic is an effective strategy to offset their negative impacts; however, little is known about the long-term optimal size of the stockpile under uncertainty and the characteristics of different countries. Using an epidemic-economic model we studied the effect on total mortality and costs of antiviral stockpile sizes for Brazil, China, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK, the USA and Zimbabwe. In the model, antiviral…

Safe abortion for HIV-positive women with unwanted pregnancy: a reproductive right.

About 2.5 million women who become pregnant each year worldwide are HIV-positive. UNAIDS recommends that HIV-positive women should be able t … ty following unsafe abortions than HIV-negative women, but evidence suggests they might. Studies in Zimbabwe and Thailand show that when information and access to legal pregnancy termination are lacking, HIV-positive women may be prevented from terminating a pregnancy. The paper concludes that it is essential for women living with HIV/AIDS to be able to ex …

Changes in specific anti-egg antibody levels following treatment with praziquantel for Schistosoma haematobium infection in children.

Fifty-seven children 6-15 years old resident in a Schistosoma haematobium endemic area in eastern Zimbabwe were treated with praziquantel at 40 mg/kg body weight. Levels of IgA, IgE, IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, IgG4, and IgM antibodies against soluble egg antigen (SEA) were assayed by ELISA before treatment and at 18 and 36 weeks following treatment. Prevalence of infection (as determined by urine egg counts) was 65% before treatment, all children were confirmed egg negative six weeks after treatment, and reinfection prevalence was 4% at 18 weeks and 21% at 36 weeks after treatment. At 18 weeks after tr…

Pattern of arterial aneurysms in acquired immunodeficiency disease.

The ever-spreading incidence of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has introduced a spectrum of unusual, subtle, and often life-threatening lesions that can affect almost every organ and tissue in the body. With the introduction of laboratory serologic evidence of HIV infection, the spectrum of indicator diseases has extended beyond the classic opportunistic infections and Kaposi sarcoma. An analysis of 28 patients in Zimbabwe with focal areas of vascular disease treated during a 4-year period (1989-1993) defined 16 patients ranging in age from 12 to 46 years appropriate for…

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of first-line ART failure in Bulawayo City, Zimbabwe's second-largest city for the year 2016 was 6.6% higher than the national average of 3.3%. We assessed the association between non-adherence and first-line ART failure persons on ART in Bulawayo City. Access to assisted reproductive technologies in sub-Saharan Africa: fertility professionals' views.

Across sub-Saharan Africa, there remains disagreement among local expert providers over the best ways to improve access to assisted reproduction in low-income contexts. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted between 2021 and 2023 with 19 fertility specialists and 11 embryologists and one clinic manager from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda to explore issues surrounding access and potential low-cost IVF options. Lack of access to ART was variously conceptualised as a problem of high cost of treatment; lack of public funding for medical services and medi…

Physical and sexual abuse in orphaned compared to non-orphaned children in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

This systematic review assessed the quantitative literature to determine whether orphans are more likely to experience physical and/or sexual abuse compared to non-orphans in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It also evaluated the quality of evidence and identified research gaps. Our search identified 10 studies, all published after 2005, from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya and Uganda. The studies consisted of a total 17,336 participants (51% female and 58% non-orphans). Of those classified as orphans (n=7,315), 73% were single orphans, and 27% were double orphans. The majority of single orphans were p…

Shoo fly, don't bother me! Efficacy of traditional methods of protecting cattle from tsetse.

Studies were made of the efficacy of using smoke and housing to protect cattle from tsetse (Diptera: Glossinidae) in Zimbabwe. The efficacy of smoke was assessed by its effect on catches in Epsilon traps baited with a blend of acetone, 1-octen-3-ol, 4-methylphenol and 3-n-propylphenol. The efficacies of different types of kraal (enclosure) were gauged according to the catches of electrocuting targets (E-targets), baited with natural ox odour, placed within various designs of kraal. Smoke from burning wood (Colophospermum mopane) or dried cow dung reduced the catch of traps by approximately 50-…
