Alcohol abuse increases the risk of HIV infection and diminishes health status of clients attending HIV testing services in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Vietnam is among those countries with the highest drinking prevalence. In this study, we examined the prevalence of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) and its associations with HIV risky behaviors, health care utilization, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among clients using voluntary HIV testing and counseling services (VCT). METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 365 VCT clients (71% male; mean age 34) was conducted in Hanoi and Nam Dinh province. AUD and HRQOL were measured using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C), and EuroQol-five dimensions-

Health and risk behaviors in survivors of childhood acute myeloid leukemia: a report from the Children's Oncology Group.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of childhood acute myeloid leukemia (AML) face increased risks of chronic disease and secondary malignancies. Substanc … mon. Twenty-two percent (22%) had smoked cigarettes in the last 30 days. One-quarter (25%) reported binge drinking in the last month. None of these exposures varied by treatment group. Less than 10% of survivors reported cocaine, heroin, or methamphetamine use. Men were more likely to report high substance exposure (P = 0.004). Sadness/suicidality score was asso …

Adolescent Intermittent Ethanol Exposure Alters Adult Exploratory and Affective Behaviors, and Cerebellar Grin2B Expression in C57BL/6J Mice.

UNLABELLED: Binge drinking is one of the most common patterns (more than 90%) of alcohol consumption by young people. During adolescence, the brain undergoes maturational changes that influence behavioral control and affective behaviors, such as cerebellar brain volume and function in adulthood. We investigated long-term impacts of adolescent binge ethanol exposure on affective and exploratory behaviors and cerebellar gene expression in adult male and female mice. Further, the cerebellum is increasingly recognized as a brain region integrating a multitude of behaviors that span from the tradit…

Prior restraint stress counteracts memory deficits associated with adolescent alcohol exposure by targeting both the hippocampal endocannabinoid and glutamatergic systems.

Recent studies link intensive adolescent alcohol exposure to adult memory deficits and glutamatergic dysfunction, as shown in preclinical models of binge drinking. Adolescent stress exposure has also been associated with changes in emotional behavior and memory, varying with stress timing and intensity. This study demonstrates that repeated exposure to restraint stress (five sessions of 1.5h from postnatal days 32-36) can prevent memory deficits, but not anxiety, caused by intensive alcohol exposure (four weekly cycles of 3g/kg ethanol doses followed by three washout days) when assessed in adu…

Cannabidiol attenuates cognitive deficits and neuroinflammation induced by early alcohol exposure in a mice model.

Foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the umbrella term used to describe the physical and mental disabilities induced by alcohol exposu … o-inflammatory and apoptotic markers within the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. To model alcohol binge drinking during gestational and lactation periods, we used pregnant C57BL/6 female mice with time-limited access to 20% v/v alcohol solution. Following the prenatal and lactation alcohol exposure (PLAE), we treated the male and female offspring with CBD from …

The proarrhythmic conundrum of alcohol intake.

The arrhythmogenic potential of alcohol consumption that leads to cardiac arrhythmia development includes the induction of both atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, with atrial fibrillation (AF) being the commonest alcohol-related arrhythmia, even with low/moderate alcohol consumption. Arrhythmias occur both with acute and chronic alcohol use. The "Holiday Heart Syndrome" relates to the occurrence of AF, most commonly following weekend or public holiday binge drinking; however, other arrhythmias may also occur, including other supraventricular arrhythmias, and occasionally even frequent ventric…

Chronic alcohol-induced liver injury correlates with memory deficits: Role for neuroinflammation.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) affects over 15 million adults over age 18 in the United States, with estimated costs of 220 billion dollars annually - mainly due to poor quality of life and lost productivity, which in turn is intricately linked to cognitive dysfunction. AUD-induced neuroinflammation in the brain, notably the hippocampus, is likely to contribute to cognitive impairments. The neuroinflammatory mechanisms mediating the impact of chronic alcohol on the central nervous system, specifically cognition, require further study. We hypothesized that chronic alcohol consumption impairs memory

Making a Case for Integrating Evidence-Based Sexual Risk Reduction and Mental Health Interventions for Adolescent Girls.

Recently identified as the top concern of teens, mental health issues now compete with sexual health risks as major threats to the well-bein … had moderate to high levels of depressive symptoms as well as other mental health challenges (e.g., binge drinking and eating, cannabis use). Thus, there is an urgent need to combine EBIs, such as HIPTeens and COPE, to curtail these leading public health problems confronting today's adolescents.

Roles of extrahepatic lipolysis and the disturbance of hepatic fatty acid metabolism in TNF-α -induced hepatic steatosis.

Our previous study showed that both Kupffer cell eliminator (GdCl3) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) receptor antagonist (etanercept) could partially attenuate binge drinking-induced liver steatosis. Herein, we extended the study by directly investigating the roles of TNF-α on the hepatic fat levels in mice and in HepG2 cells, and explored the underlying mechanisms. SPF male ICR mice were exposed to TNF-α (0.166 mg/kg body weight) with or without phenylisopropyl adenosine (PIA, an anti-lipolytic drug) for 1.5, 3, 6, and 24 h. We found that TNF-α treatment resulted in hepatic triglyceride (T…

Alcoholic Cardiomyopathy: Disrupted Protein Balance and Impaired Cardiomyocyte Contractility.

Alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) can develop after consumption of relatively large amounts of alcohol over time or from acute binge drinking. Of the many factors implicated in the etiology of ACM, chronic perturbation in protein balance has been strongly implicated. This review focused on recent contributions (since 2010) in the area of protein metabolism and cardiac function related to ACM. Data reviewed include that from in vitro and preclinical in vivo animal studies where alcohol or an oxidative metabolite was studied and outcome measures in either cardiomyocytes or whole heart pertaining to…
