Tentative findings of a study of the technology needs and use patterns of persons with mental retardation.

An examination of the technology use patterns and needs of 680 persons with mental retardation was conducted as part of a grant application process in response to P. L. 100-407, the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988. Important trends which were deemed valuable for state technology planning purposes were revealed which have implications for other states desiring to develop comprehensive technology systems. Responses obtained from participants indicated that needs for technology were evident in all areas of life functioning, with computer technology bein

The appropriateness of performing coronary artery bypass surgery.

Information about how appropriately procedures are performed is vital to the understanding of the impact of technology and to the success of efforts to channel its use appropriately. While the efficacy of coronary artery bypass surgery has been addressed in several large-scale, randomized trials, there is little information about how appropriately the procedure is actually being used in the community. We determined the appropriateness of coronary artery bypass surgeries performed in three randomly chosen hospitals in a western state. We determined appropriateness by comparing data obtained fro

Application of a Dynamic Map for Learning, Communicating, Navigating, and Improving Therapeutic Development.

Drug discovery and development is commonly schematized as a "pipeline," and, although appreciated by drug developers to be a useful oversimplification, this cartology may perpetuate inaccurate notions of straightforwardness and is of minimal utility for process engineering to improve efficiency. To create a more granular schema, a group of drug developers, researchers, patient advocates, and regulators developed a crowdsourced atlas of the steps involved in translating basic discoveries into health interventions, annotated with the steps that are particularly prone to difficulty or failure. The Coming of Age of Nucleic Acid Vaccines during COVID-19.

In the 21st century, several emergent viruses have posed a global threat. Each pathogen has emphasized the value of rapid and scalable vaccine development programs. The ongoing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has made the importance of such efforts especially clear. New biotechnological advances in vaccinology allow for recent advances that provide only the nucleic acid building blocks of an antigen, eliminating many safety concerns. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these DNA and RNA vaccines have facilitated the development and deployment of vaccines at an u

Contemporary Approaches Towards the Optimization of Embryo Implantation.

Background/Objectives: Embryo implantation is a highly regulated, multistep process requiring precise synchronization between a developmentally competent blastocyst and a receptive endometrium. Despite advances in reproductive medicine, implantation failure remains a major limiting factor in assisted reproductive technology (ART), particularly in cases of recurrent implantation failure (RIF). This review aims to summarize current knowledge on the molecular, cellular, and immunological mechanisms governing embryo-endometrial interaction and to evaluate contemporary strategies for optimizing imp

Microwave radiofrequencies, 5G, 6G, graphene nanomaterials: Technologies used in neurological warfare.

BACKGROUND: Scientific literature, with no conflicts of interest, shows that even below the limits defined by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, microwaves from telecommunication technologies cause numerous health effects: neurological, oxidative stress, carcinogenicity, deoxyribonucleic acid and immune system damage, electro-hypersensitivity. The majority of these biological effects of non-thermal microwave radiation have been known since the 1970s. METHODS: Detailed scientific, political, and military documents were analyzed. Most of the scientific literature

N-Succinylated Canonical vs. Dehydropeptides: Contrasting Self-Assembly Pathways and Hydrogel Properties.

Limited mechanical robustness and prompt proteolytic degradation preclude wider biomedical application of supramolecular peptide hydrogels. Low-molecular-weight dehydropeptides represent a promising class of hydrogelators, owing to their enhanced proteolytic stability, high self-assembly propensity, biocompatibility, and tunable rheological and drug-release properties. Herein, we prepared a small library of N-succinylated dehydrotripeptides (Suc-L-Xaa-L-Phe-Z-ΔPhe-OMe/-OH; Xaa = Phe or Val), together with the canonical analogs (Suc-L-Phe-L-Phe-L-Phe-OMe/-OH), to assess whether in addition to p

Leveraging Transformers-based models and linked data for deep phenotyping in radiology.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Despite significant investments in the normalization and the standardization of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), free text is still the rule rather than the exception in clinical notes. The use of free text has implications in data reuse methods used for supporting clinical research since the query mechanisms used in cohort definition and patient matching are mainly based on structured data and clinical terminologies. This study aims to develop a method for the secondary use of clinical text by: (a) using Natural Language Processing (NLP) for tagging clinical notes w
