Linezolid in the treatment of severe central nervous system infections resistant to recommended antimicrobial compounds.

The progressive emergence of antimicrobial-resistant Gram-positive cocci especially in the setting of surgery and intensive care, recommends … and the spread of glycopeptide-resistant bacterial strains. Three representative case reports (two brain abscesses and one post-surgical meningitis) are presented and discussed in light of the current literature: in all these cases, salvage linezolid treatment proved resolutory.

Sella Bugged! Abscess Inside a Craniopharyngioma: Case Report with Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Abscess within a craniopharyngioma (CPG) is extremely rare and only 8 such cases have been reported in literature. Most patients present with hypopituitarism and visual disturbances. We report the first ever case of a CPG with abscess in a pediatric patient. CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old girl presented with visual deterioration and bitemporal hemianopia. Her CT and MRI brain suggested of a sellar-suprasellar CPG. Due to ill-developed sino-nasal anatomy, a transcranial approach was made for the lesion. The lesion was well capsulated, thick walled, and appeared inflamed. Upon incisin

[Penetrating transorbital intracranial foreign body].

We report a seven year-old boy who suffered left orbital penetration of an industrial sewing machine needle. The needle passing through the left orbit and sphenoid bone at the posterior was extending into the layers of the dura of the left temporal lobe. In this patient, we preferred surgical approach and there was no complication after surgery. Penetrating intraorbital foreign materials with intracranial extension may lead to complications such as intracerebral hematoma, brain abscess, CSF fistula, proptosis of the eye, diplopia, orbital cellulitis and periorbital abscess. They have to be rem…

Rapid methods in clinical microbiology. Rapid methods. Overview and prospects for the future.

The field of infectious diseases covers many entities that can be considered true medical emergencies. Included are meningitis, brain abscess, spinal epidural abscess, epiglottitis, pneumonia, bacteremia, endocarditis, certain intraabdominal infections, gas gangrene, and necrotizing fasciitis. Because emergencies related to infectious agents are potentially the most readily reversible of all medical emergencies, it behooves us to diagnose them as rapidly and specifically as possible so that appropriate life-saving therapy may be begun expeditiously. This article reviews and summarizes the pres…

Renal transplantation: an analysis of operative complications.

Review of 112 renal transplants in 95 patients with end-stage renal disease revealed a wound infection rate of 18 percent. The incidence of infection was unquestionably greater if drains were placed in the wound. An 8.8 per cent incidence of pulmonary infection was represented by lung abscess, bronchopneumonia and necrotizing pneumonitis. Three deaths were attributable to fungal infections-candida sepsis, cryptococcal sepsis, and Nocardia brain abscess. In 14 per cent of this series vascular anastomotic complications occurred, and were attributable to stenosis, thrombosis, or hemorrhage. The c…

Mycoplasma hominis Intracranial Abscess Diagnosed by Characteristic Colonies Obtained Through Extended Culture: Case Report and Literature Review.

Mycoplasma hominis (M. hominis) causes genitourinary infections and pregnancy-related complications. Reports of intracranial abscesses due to M. hominis infection are rare. Here, we report a M. hominis intracranial abscess case following a traffic accident who was admitted to our hospital (day 0). The patient, a man in his 70s, underwent cystourethrography, and a urethral catheter was inserted. On day three, the patient underwent intracerebral hematoma evacuation, and on day seven, intravenous ceftazidime and vancomycin were administered after the patient developed a fever. On day 10, the anti

Is splenectomy a treatment option for aseptic abscesses in patients with Crohn's disease?

The most common extraintestinal manifestations of Crohn's disease concern joints, skin, and eyes; however other organs such as liver, pancreas, kidneys, heart, lungs or brain can also be affected. Aseptic abscesses are an emergent entity in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and despite medical treatment the surgical approach may represent an alternative therapy. We report a case of a young woman with splenic aseptic abscesses as complication of Crohn's disease. After steroid sparing and antibiotic failure the patient underwent successful splenectomy.

Intracranial complications of midline nasal dermoid cysts.

BACKGROUND: Nasal dermoid cysts are common tumors in children. Due to anomalies in embryologic development of the nasal complex, sometimes an intracranial extension exists. When these cysts become infected they can lead to meningitis, brain abscess and death. METHODS: We report the case of a 1.5-year-old girl admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit after infection of a nasal dermoid cyst. RESULTS: The infant had a spiking fever and epileptic seizures. She was stabilized, intubated and a CT scan showed a subcutaneous mass with an adjacent zone of encephalitis and brain abscess formatio…

Culture-Negative Endocarditis Complicated by Cerebral Abscesses Due to Streptococcus gordonii: A Diagnostic Odyssey.

Endocarditis is a serious diagnostic entity that carries a high rate of morbidity and mortality, with complications including heart failure, septic embolization, brain abscesses, and stroke. Blood culture-negative endocarditis (BCNE) represents a particularly challenging clinical scenario where the causative organism is undetectable, either due to being difficult to culture or due to the empiric administration of antimicrobial agents. This entity generally results in delayed diagnosis and treatment of endocarditis, with a potential increase in the rate of complications. In this report, we pres…

[Peculiar computed tomographic images after intracranial use of microfibrillar collagen hemostat: report of three cases].

After the intracranial application of microfibrillar collagen hemostat (Avitene), CT revealed contrast enhancement suggestive of brain abscess or residual or recurrent tumor in three patients. The first case was a 22-year-old male with left ventricular oligodendroglioma. At operation Avitene was applied to the ventricular wall and incised frontal lobe. Two months after the operation CT revealed ring enhancement at the left frontal lobe and ventricular enlargement. Craniotomy was performed again. Histological examination, however, revealed no recurrent tumor but residual Avitene and granulation…
