Traumatic Posterior Atlantoaxial Dislocation with Intact Odontoid Treated by C2 Laminar Screw Fixation: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition characterized by an abnormal alignment between the atlas and axis. Traumatic AAD are commonly associated with severe ligamentous injury and may result in spinal cord compression or neurological deficits. Posterior atlantoaxial dislocation with an intact odontoid process and without associated fracture is extremely uncommon and has rarely been reported in literature. OBJECTIVE: To report a rare case of traumatic posterior atlantoaxial dislocation with an intact odontoid process and describe its mana

Comparison of skeletal segmentation by deep learning-based and atlas-based segmentation in prostate cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare the deep learning-based (VSBONE BSI) and atlas-based (BONENAVI) segmentation accuracy that have been developed to measure the bone scan index based on skeletal segmentation. METHODS: We retrospectively conducted bone scans for 383 patients with prostate cancer. These patients were divided into two groups: 208 patients were injected with 99mTc-hydroxymethylene diphosphonate processed by VSBONE BSI, and 175 patients were injected with 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate processed by BONENAVI. Three observers classified the skeletal segmentations as either a "Match" or "

HPV status represents dominant trait driving delineation of survival-associated gene co-expression networks in head and neck cancer.

Integration of high-dimensional tumor gene expression data with clinicopathological data can increase our understanding of disease diversity, enable retrospective patient stratification, and identify new potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Using a systems biology approach, we provide a holistic overview of gene co-expression networks in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC). Weighted gene co-expression network analysis of HNSCC RNA sequencing data from 519 patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) was used to determine correlates of 5-year survival, using regression tree-

Clinicopathological significance of miR-27b targeting Golgi protein 73 in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

Using five bioinformatics analysis software, we identified Golgi protein 73 (GP73) as a putative target of microRNA-27b (miR-27b), which is closely related to various biological processes or diseases such as bone metabolism disease, adipose cell and muscle cell development, pulmonary hypertension, cervical cancer, and breast cancer. However, the clinical significance of miR-27b in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still unclear. The differential expression of miR-27b in HCC and adjacent normal liver tissues was measured by quantitative reverse transcription PCR. Our results showed that the exp

APOBEC3C is a novel target for the immune treatment of lower-grade gliomas.

BACKGROUND: Apolipoprotein B mRNA editing catalytic polypeptide-like (APOBEC) type 3C (A3C) has been identified as a cancer molecular biomarker in the past decade. However, the practical role of A3C in lower-grade gliomas (LGGs) in improving the clinical outcome remains unclear. This study aims to discuss the function of A3C in immunotherapy in LGGs. METHODS: The RNA-Sequencing (RNA-seq) and corresponding clinical data were extracted from UCSC Xena and the results were verified in the Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA). Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was used for screeni

Regional Cerebrospinal Fluid Motility as a Key Determinant of Soluble Amyloid-β Levels and Kinetics.

Alzheimer's disease and cerebral amyloid angiopathy are characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) species, yet the human fluid-physiological mechanisms that regulate soluble Aβ transport and clearance remain poorly understood. Aβ40, the dominant vascular Aβ species, remains relatively soluble and accumulates preferentially along vascular basement membranes, making it especially relevant to CSF-mediated clearance pathways. Here, we used non-invasive low b-value diffusion MRI to quantify regional effective CSF motility in a large multimodal cohort from the Knight Alzheimer Disease Rese

Does Additional Bone Grafting of Atlantoaxial Joint Increase Bone Fusion Rate of Iliac Crest Autograft in Posterior Occipitocervical Fusion? Retrospective, Controlled Study with 2-Year Follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to explore whether additional bone grafting of the atlantoaxial joint increases the bone fusion rate of iliac crest autograft in posterior occipitocervical fusion surgery. METHODS: From January 2012 to January 2016, a total of 78 patients who had basilar invagination with occipitalization of the atlas came to our tertiary spine center. Except for those lost to follow-up (10 cases) or who had a follow-up time <2 years (20 cases), there were 48 patients retrospectively included in this study. In the control group, a piece of autogenous iliac corticocancellous bone was place

Successful resection of anterior and anterolateral lesions at the craniovertebral junction using a simple posterolateral approach.

Tumors at the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) often present a challenge due to proximity to vital neurovascular structures. In the last few decades, many authors have proposed complex surgical approaches to access pathologies located anterior or anterolateral to the CVJ with the hopes of reducing morbidity. We propose that the simple posterolateral approach in a semi-sitting position can be used to resect most anterior and anterolateral CVJ tumors safely and effectively. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical series of 10 patients treated by the senior author using the posterolateral suboccip

Basilar impression in osteogenesis imperfecta: can it be treated with halo traction and posterior fusion?

Basilar impression (BI) and hydrocephalus complicating osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is usually treated by anterior transoral decompression and posterior fixation. Nevertheless, it may be questioned if posterior fusion following axial halo traction is adequate in patients with symptomatic BI complicating OI. We report on a case with progressive symptomatic hydrocephalus and BI complicating OI that was successfully treated by halo traction followed by posterior occipitocervical fusion. However, after a symptom free interval of 2 years the patient suffered from recurrence of symptomatic hydroceph

Steinmann Pins for C1 Lateral Mass Screw Placement During Atlantoaxial Stabilization.

OBJECTIVE: The authors describe a modified technique for placement of the C1 lateral mass screw using a Steinmann pin as a guide. This technique minimizes dissection and provides atlantoaxial stabilization during arthrodesis. METHODS: In our technique, a nonthreaded 1.6-mm spade-tip Steinmann pin is placed into the lateral mass of C1 to serve as a guide over which a powered drill is used for screw insertion. Perioperative data were collected for consecutive patients who underwent a C1-2 arthrodesis that involved the modified technique between March 2010 and July 2016. Data included blood loss

Odontoid compression of the brainstem without basilar impression-- "odontoid invagination".

We report five patients with odontoid invagination, in which the odontoid process bulges upward into the foramen magnum and compresses the brainstem without deformity of the occipital bone. Two patients had a craniovertebral abnormality associated with Chiari malformation without instability of the craniovertebral junction (stable odontoid invagination). The other three patients had dislocation of the craniovertebral junction due to iatrogenic destruction of the occipital condyle, rheumatoid arthritis or an anomaly of C2 (unstable odontoid invagination). Patients with stable odontoid invaginat

Unilateral C1-C2 vertical distraction injuries: Can we treat conservatively?

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic atlantoaxial joint (AAJ) vertical distraction injuries lie on a spectrum of injury involving the craniocervical junction. Isolated injuries can be unstable, requiring surgical stabilization, a highly morbid procedure given C1-C2 joint's primary role in cervical spine rotation. Previous authors established normative C1-C2 lateral mass values to evaluate for vertical AAJ distraction injuries. However, these studies focus on bilateral AAJ injury, with no data on unilateral or incomplete AAJ injuries. Clinical decision-making regarding these partial injuries is fraught with
