There are diagnostic tests that allow to differentiate feminine hyperandrogenism of tumorous, non-tumorous, ovarian, adrenal and peripheral origin. We made a review of the current available tests accordingly to a case of amenorrhea and hyperandrogenism. By means of the low-dose dexamethasone suppression and human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (hCG) stimulation test we confirmed a suprarenal participation. There was spontaneous menses when treated with dexamethasone.

The main tumor markers used in breast and gynaecological neoplasias are reviewed with their individual characteristics: carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), chorionic gonadotropin hormone (CGH), CA 125, CA 15.3 and Squamous Cell Carcinoma Antigen (SCC). Their indications are specified according to the following cancer locations: breast, trophoblast, ovary, endometrium and cervix. The major clinical applications of the tumor markers routinely used are emphasized.

In this report we present two patients with intracranial multiple midline tumours in the suprasellar region and pineal gland. We postulate that in a patient with multiple midline tumours and normal values of the tumour markers human chorionic gonadotropin and alpha-fetoprotein in serum and cerebrospinal fluid, the only possible diagnosis is a germinoma. In such a situation no histological confirmation is required to start low-dose radiotherapy.

Virilizing hepatoblastoma was found to be the cause of precocious puberty in a 3 1/4-year-old boy. Both human chorionic gonadotropins and alphafetoprotein in increased amounts were detected in serum and tumor tissue. These substances disappeared from the blood after removal of the tumor. Ultrastructure studies revealed the presence of dense, membrane bound, secretory granules responsible for the hormone production.

During the years 1974 to 1977, a total of 77 treatment cycles of human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG)-human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) were administered to 41 infertile patients with polycystic ovarian disease who failed to conceive on clomiphene. UNLABELLED: Precocious puberty is not a typical manifestation of patients with Klinefelter syndrome (KS). However, there is an increased incidence of mediastinal germ cell tumors (M-GCT) in KS, whereas the discussion of a generally higher tumor risk in this condition is still controversial. A rare subgroup of KS patients consists of prepubertal children with precocious puberty due to human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)-producing M-GCTs. We present clinical data on a boy with KS and sexual precocity, and summarize the published data on 12 boys with KS out of 54 cases of KS and M-GCT.

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is extremely rare in spontaneous pregnancies. Spontaneous OHSS can result from glycoprotein hormones stimulating follicle-stimulating hormone receptors (FSHR).
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a twin pregnancy in which ovarian torsion and hemoperitoneum complicating OHSS were treated with left adnexectomy and aspiration. The only trigger for spontaneous OHSS in this case was high levels of chorionic gonadotropin hormone.

Tubal pregnancy specimens from a patient with undetectable serum beta-hCG levels and a control case with a low beta-hCG titer by radioimmunoassay were analyzed using peroxidase-antiperoxidase immunocytochemical localization of placental proteins. The results indicated that deficient production of beta-hCG by ectopic trophoblast was responsible for false-negative pregnancy tests in one patient.
