Global warming in the twenty-first century: an alternative scenario.

A common view is that the current global warming rate will continue or accelerate. But we argue that rapid warming in recent decades has been driven mainly by non-CO(2) greenhouse gases (GHGs), such as chlorofluorocarbons, CH(4), and N(2)O, not by the products of fossil fuel burning, CO(2) and aerosols, the positive and negative climate forcings of which are partially offsetting. The growth rate of non-CO(2) GHGs has declined in the past decade. If sources of CH(4) and O(3) precursors were reduced in the future, the change in climate forcing by non-CO(2) GHGs in the next 50 years could be near

CO2 greenhouse in the early martian atmosphere: SO2 inhibits condensation.

Many investigators of the early martian climate have suggested that a dense carbon dioxide atmosphere was present and warmed the surface above the melting point of water (J.B. Pollack, J.F. Kasting, S.M. Richardson, and K. Poliakoff 1987. Icarus 71, 203-224). However, J.F. Kasting (1991. Icarus 94, 1-13) pointed out that previous thermal models of the primitive martian atmosphere had not considered the condensation of CO2. When this effect was incorporated, Kasting found that CO2 by itself is inadequate to warm the surface. SO2 absorbs strongly in the near UV region of the solar spectrum. Whil

Spatial inference of Culex pipiens abundance and biting activity distribution in the Netherlands using citizen science.

BACKGROUND: The expanding geographical spread of mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) has intensified the need for effective mosquito surveillance. Additional surveillance, particularly of species such as Culex pipiens, is essential as this species is a key vector of West Nile and Usutu viruses. Citizen science offers an innovative approach to monitoring Cx. pipiens populations. METHODS: Our study utilized data from the Mosquito Alert mobile app to model the spatial distribution and abundance of Cx. pipiens and mosquito bites during the summer of 2021 in the Netherlands. Using generalized linear mi

The utility of a Bayesian predictive model to forecast neuroinvasive West Nile virus disease in the United States of America, 2022.

Arboviruses (arthropod-borne-viruses) are an emerging global health threat that are rapidly spreading as climate change, international business transport, and landscape fragmentation impact local ecologies. Since its initial detection in 1999, West Nile virus has shifted from being a novel to an established arbovirus in the United States of America. Subsequently, more than 25,000 cases of West Nile neuro-invasive disease have been diagnosed, cementing West Nile virus as an arbovirus of public health importance. Given its novelty in the United States of America, high-risk ecologies are largely

Adaptation of faba bean cultivars across Norwegian environments: identification of elite material and definition of optimal breeding and cultivar testing procedures.

BACKGROUND: Faba bean cultivation in northern Europe is challenged by high variability in yield performance due to strong genotype × environment interaction (GEI). Appropriate GEI modeling and interpretation is essential for both cultivar recommendation and breeding for Nordic conditions. METHODS: Grain yield data from fifteen spring faba bean cultivars evaluated in eleven Norwegian environments during four growing seasons (2022-2025) were analyzed using the Additive Main Effects and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) model. Climatic drivers of GEI were investigated using factorial regression,

Spatiotemporal distribution of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sri Lanka and future case burden estimates.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical vector-borne disease, which is on the rise in Sri Lanka. Spatiotemporal and risk factor analyses are useful for understanding transmission dynamics, spatial clustering and predicting future disease distribution and trends to facilitate effective infection control. METHODS: The nationwide clinically confirmed cutaneous leishmaniasis and climatic data were collected from 2001 to 2019. Hierarchical clustering and spatiotemporal cross-correlation analysis were used to measure the region-wide and local (between neighboring districts) synchrony of t

Temperature-dependent phenology of Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae): Simulation and visualization of current and future distributions along the Eastern Afromontane.

There is a scarcity of laboratory and field-based results showing the movement of the diamondback moth (DBM) Plutella xylostella (L.) across a spatial scale. We studied the population growth of the diamondback moth (DBM) Plutella xylostella (L.) under six constant temperatures, to understand and predict population changes along altitudinal gradients and under climate change scenarios. Non-linear functions were fitted to continuously model DBM development, mortality, longevity and oviposition. We compiled the best-fitted functions for each life stage to yield a phenology model, which we stochas

Seeing the forest for the scenarios: Using decision trees to draw conclusions from large energy scenario sets.

Energy transition studies often present hundreds of scenarios, yielding large datasets that are challenging to interpret. Alternative approaches define a few qualitative storylines, which are more accessible but disconnected from model-based evidence. Here, we show that decision trees, a popular machine learning technique, bridge this disconnect by distilling numerous scenarios into a small set of interpretable storylines centered around policy-relevant levers. We demonstrate this approach across three global and European case studies: First, we translate 1000 integrated assessment model scena

Identification of carbon dioxide flux drivers in a High Arctic tundra environment.

We analysed the carbon dioxide fluxes from vegetation, measured by portable flux chambers, and several meteo-climatic and environmental variables obtained during six summer campaigns at two different sites in the High-Arctic tundra in the Bayelva basin near Ny Ålesund, Svalbard, during the period 2019-2025. The two sites have similar climatic conditions and vegetation cover, in terms of species distribution and abundance, but different distance from the glaciers. The measured fluxes provided information on Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE), Ecosystem Respiration (ER) and Gross Primary Production (G

Unleashing the combined potential of bio-based carbon dioxide removal in Germany's path to net zero from the bioenergy system perspective.

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is an essential measure for achieving national and international climate targets, complementing emission reductions. Germany aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 and net-negative emissions thereafter. Nonetheless, current deployment levels are still a far cry from what is needed. This study employs a comprehensive modeling approach to examine the regional deployment of bio-based CDR in Germany, integrating techno-economic and regional conditions. We focus on two key CDR approaches: technical and natural sinks, thereby coupling energy and non-energy se

Global Daily Column Average CO2 at 0.1° × 0.1° Spatial Resolution Integrating OCO-3, GOSAT, CAMS with EOF and Deep Learning.

Accurate global carbon dioxide (CO2) distribution with high spatial and temporal resolution is essential for understanding its dynamics and impacts on climate change. This study tackles the challenge of data gaps in satellite observations of greenhouse gases, caused by orbital and observational limitations. We reconstructed a comprehensive dataset of Column-averaged CO2 (XCO2) concentrations by integrating re-analyzed data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) with observations from GOSAT and OCO-3 satellites. Using two advanced data reconstruction methods-Data Interpolating

Environmental factor analysis of cholera in China using remote sensing and geographical information systems.

Cholera is one of a number of infectious diseases that appears to be influenced by climate, geography and other natural environments. This study analysed the environmental factors of the spatial distribution of cholera in China. It shows that temperature, precipitation, elevation, and distance to the coastline have significant impact on the distribution of cholera. It also reveals the oceanic environmental factors associated with cholera in Zhejiang, which is a coastal province of China, using both remote sensing (RS) and geographical information systems (GIS). The analysis has validated the c

A statistical model of Rift Valley fever activity in Egypt.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a viral disease of animals and humans and a global public health concern due to its ecological plasticity, adaptivity, and potential for spread to countries with a temperate climate. In many places, outbreaks are episodic and linked to climatic, hydrologic, and socioeconomic factors. Although outbreaks of RVF have occurred in Egypt since 1977, attempts to identify risk factors have been limited. Using a statistical learning approach (lasso-regularized generalized linear model), we tested the hypotheses that outbreaks in Egypt are linked to (1) River Nile conditions t

Respiration-Induced Weakening of Land Sink Contributed to the Largest CO2 Increase in 2024.

In 2024, the global annual growth rate of atmospheric CO2 (CGR) surged to a record of 3.73 ppm year-1-the highest since 1959-exceeding the 1.5°C climate threshold for the first time. However, the drivers behind this unprecedented rise remain poorly understood. Here, we employed a machine-learning approach integrating satellite-derived gross primary productivity (GPP) and climatic data to estimate the 2024 land sink (SLAND) at approximately 2.21 ± 0.25 GtC year-1, which had a striking decline of 1.01 GtC year-1 compared to the 2014-2023 average. The reduction in SLAND, most pronounced in tropic

Advancing SDG 7 & 13 in China: Investigating energy use, policy stringency, and environmental technologies for a low-carbon future.

China is the most significant carbon emitter on the planet in terms of global environmental stability; this represents a clear and present danger. Hence, there is a need to establish a separate model that can help policymakers devise more effective mitigation policies to ensure sustainability in emissions and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therefore, in light of these circumstances, this research seeks to delve deep into the relationships between natural resource depletion (NRD), environmental policy stringency (EPS), climate change mitigation technologies (C

Impact of Climate Variability and Change on the Surface Ozone Response to NOx Emissions Reductions.

Climate variability and change introduce a range of air quality outcomes for a given emissions policy. Quantifying this range helps us evaluate the likelihood of meeting air quality targets in an uncertain future climate. Using a global atmospheric chemistry model ensemble, we project how the ozone response to a 10% reduction in anthropogenic nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions varies across three northern midlatitude source regions under two future climate scenarios. In Eastern North America and West-Central Europe, where ambient ozone is NOx-sensitive in the historical scenario, the magnitude of
