[A Case of Curative Resection after Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy for Locally-Advanced Sigmoid Colon Carcinoma with Urinary Bladder Invasion].

A 56-year-old man was referred to our hospital for multidisciplinary treatment of advanced sigmoid colon carcinoma with a suspected bladder invasion. The patient received 8 courses of modified Leucovorin, fluorouracil, and oxaliplatin (mFOLFOX6)plus panitumumab as neoadjuvant chemotherapy for reliable and safe radical resection after ileostomy construction. There was a significant reduction in the tumor size following chemotherapy; hence, low anterior resection was performed. In addition, since preoperative and intraoperative findings suggested bladder invasion, a total cystectomy with ileal c

Identification of a novel PRR15L-RSPO2 fusion transcript in a sigmoid colon cancer derived from superficially serrated adenoma.

Superficially serrated adenoma (SuSA) is a recently proposed subtype of colorectal serrated lesion. We here report a sigmoid colon cancer derived from SuSA, which exhibited aggressive clinical behavior. Endoscopically, the tumor appeared as a superficial elevated lesion with a large nodule. Histological examination of the surgically resected material showed tubular adenocarcinoma associated with SuSA. Although tumor invasion was limited to the submucosal layer, lymph node and extranodal metastases were detected. The patient subsequently developed peritoneal metastases and died 15 months after

[A Case Report of Sigmoid Colon Cancer with a Synchronous Large Liver Metastasis Curatively Resected Following Multidisciplinary Therapy].

A 50's woman referred to our hospital with high serum CEA level was found to have RAS-wild sigmoid colon cancer with a 15 cm size unresectable synchronous liver metastasis(LM)in the right lobe during the endoscopic, radiological, and immunohistological examinations. CapeOX was introduced, but the LM lesion enlarged to 18 cm after 2 courses. Therefore, the regimen was switched to FOLFIRI plus panitumumab. Six courses ofchemotherapy resulted in the reduction ofthe LM lesion to 11 cm, and the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors revealed PR with no severe adverse effects, and curative sur

Curative resection for locally advanced sigmoid colon cancer using neoadjuvant chemotherapy with FOLFOX plus panitumumab: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: FOLFOX and panitumumab combined chemotherapy plays an important role for metastatic colorectal cancer. However the usefulness of this regimen for neoadjuvant therapy is unclear. CASE REPORT: A 67-year-old man with abdominal pain and pneumaturia was diagnosed with RAS wild-type sigmoid colon cancer with urinary bladder invasion and colovesical fistulas. Because the cancer was considered to be unresectable, a transverse-loop colostomy was performed. Colonoscopy and computed tomography revealed a marked reduction in the size of the primary tumor after six courses of FOLFOX4 (oxalip

Elevated Preoperative Carcinoembryonic Antigen and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Predict Shorter Survival in Patients with Sigmoid Colon Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the prognostic significance of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and their associations with clinicopathological features in patients with sigmoid colon carcinoma (SCC). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with SCC treated with curative surgery from January 2001 to June 2010 at our hospital. Patients' general, clinical, histopathologic, and serum biomarkers were analyzed. We measured VEGF in 176 sets of SCC tissues and adjacent noncancerous tissue samples with immunohistochemical and Elivison staining. CEA was me

Pelvic abscess complicating sigmoid colon perforation by migrating intrauterine device: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are commonly used as a contraceptive method. However, they may cause rare but potentially serious complications such as migration through the uterine wall and gastrointestinal perforation. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of a 26-year woman, carrying an IUD for 2 years, who presented to the emergency with pelvic pain with breakthrough bleeding. Abdominal imaging revealed the presence of two devices the first of which was located in the uterine cavity and the other in the wall of the sigmoid colon associated with a 5-centimeter pelvic collection.

[Long-Term Survival in a Case of Sigmoid Colon Cancer with Multiple Liver Metastases Treated with Repeated Hepatectomies].

A 75-year-old man was diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer with multiple liver metastases at our hospital in May 2010. He underwent mFOLFOX6 and panitumumab chemotherapy for 6 months. He then underwent sigmoidectomy, lymphadenectomy D3, partial resection of 2 parts of S6, and cholecystectomy in January 2011. However, he underwent partial resection of the liver an additional 4 times in the 5 years followingthe primary operation. Despite multiple liver metastases, he is alive 5 years after the primary operation, havingsurvived 5 hepatectomies for multiple resectable liver metastases.

Safety and feasibility of laparoscopic sigmoid colon and rectal cancer surgery in patients with previous vertical abdominal laparotomy.

INTRODUCTION: Current study aims to analyze the impact of previous vertical laparotomy on safety and feasibility of laparoscopic sigmoid colon and rectal cancer operations. METHODS: All consecutive patients who underwent a laparoscopic resection for sigmoid colon or rectal cancer were included. These aspects were abstracted and compared within no laparotomy and previous vertical laparotomy groups: demographics, perioperative aspects, pathological features and survival. RESULTS: There were 252 patients in no laparotomy group, and 25 cases with previous vertical incisions including lower (n =

Feasibility of single-port laparoscopic surgery for sigmoid colon and rectal cancers and preoperative assessment of operative difficulty.

PURPOSE: Single-port laparoscopic surgery is more difficult for sigmoid colon and rectal cancers than for right-sided colon cancer. We sought to analyze the feasibility of this procedure for sigmoid colon and rectal cancers and to estimate its difficulty. METHODS: We analyzed prospectively collected data from 63 consecutive patients with sigmoid colon or rectal cancers who underwent single-port laparoscopic surgery at our institution from June 2009 to December 2011. Patient and tumor characteristics, including patients' pelvic anatomy which was assessed on CT scan imaging, were evaluated to e

A rare case of sigmoid colon obstruction in patient with ulcerative colitis: role of transabdominal ultrasound-guided biopsy.

INTRODUCTION: Inappropriate activation of the TLX1 (T-cell leukemia homeobox 1) gene by chromosomal translocation is a recurrent event in human T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (T-ALL). Ectopic expression of TLX1 in murine bone marrow progenitor cells using a conventional retroviral vector efficiently yields immortalized cell lines and induces T-ALL-like tumors in mice after long latency. METHODS: To eliminate a potential contribution of retroviral insertional mutagenesis to TLX1 immortalizing and transforming function, we incorporated the TLX1 gene into an insulated self-inactivating retr

Difficult weaning from mechanical ventilator in a patient with corticosteroid insufficiency after low anterior resection of sigmoid colon.

A 75-year-old man underwent low anterior resection for sigmoid colon cancer under general anesthesia. Comprehensive preoperative surveys showed normal cardiopulmonary functions. In spite of adequate fluid administration, persistent intraoperative hypotension required vasopressors to maintain an acceptable blood pressure. Although the patient was fully awakened from anesthesia with adequate oxygenation, repeated attempts to wean him from the ventilator failed in the postanesthesia intensive care unit, despite recovery from the effect of muscle relaxant. Low plasma cortisol level was found in a

Study of intra-abdominal fat distribution in sigmoid colon cancer in Japanese patients by use of MDCT data.

To assess the relationship between intra-abdominal fat and sigmoid colon cancer, we investigated the intra-abdominal fat distribution in 172 examples of sigmoid colon cancer and 767 examples of various other pathologies by using data from multidetector-row computed tomography. One significant finding was that the intra-abdominal fat area in sigmoid colon cancer presents a small secondary peak in the pelvis on the profile of the intra-abdominal fat, which we called the pelvic sub-peak. The presence or absence of the pelvic sub-peak was determined based on the sub-peak ratio, which was calculate

Early primary duodenal carcinoma arising from Brunner's glands synchronously occurring with sigmoid colon carcinoma: report of a case.

We herein report a case of early primary duodenal carcinoma arising from Brunner's glands synchronously occurring with sigmoid colon carcinoma. A 65-year-old man with a 5-year history of diabetes mellitus and benign prostatic hypertrophy was admitted to our hospital to undergo a resection of sigmoid colon carcinoma in December 2000. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, which was performed as routine preoperative screening, revealed an elevated submucosal-tumor-like lesion with a shallow central depression in the anterior wall of the duodenal bulb. A partial duodenectomy with a partial gastrectomy

A rare case of repeated anastomotic recurrence due to tumor implantation after curative surgery for sigmoid colon cancer.

BACKGROUND: Anastomotic recurrence is often experienced at colocolic or colorectal anastomoses. Tumor cell implantation has been reported as the mechanism of anastomotic recurrence. However, anastomotic recurrence occurring repeatedly after curative surgery is rare. We herein report a rare case of repeated anastomotic recurrence after curative surgery for sigmoid colon cancer. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old man underwent radical surgery for sigmoid colon cancer. However, anastomotic recurrence developed three times during three years and six months after the initial operation in spite of ir
