A low chromium diet increases body fat, energy intake and circulating triglycerides and insulin in male and female rats fed a moderately high-fat, high-sucrose diet from peripuberty to young adult age.

Trivalent chromium (Cr) may function to potentiate the action of insulin, but the effects of chromium intakes on metabolic parameters are unclear. Cr is listed as a potentially beneficial element for rodents based on studies that show feeding low quantities affect glucose metabolism. Cr is recommended at 1 mg per kg in rodent diets. This study examined the effects of different levels of dietary Cr on body weight, body composition, energy intake, food efficiency and metabolic parameters of lipid and glucose metabolism in male and female rats when fed from peripuberty to young adult age in the b

Diversity of SCCmec elements and spa types in South African Staphylococcus aureus mecA-positive blood culture isolates.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus varies depending on the healthcare facility, region and country. To understand its genetic diversity, transmission, dissemination, epidemiology and evolution in a particular geographical location, it is important to understand the similarities and variations in the population being studied. This can be achieved by using various molecular characterisation techniques. This study aimed to provide detailed molecular characterisation of South African mecA-positive S. aureus blood culture isolates by describing the SCCmec types, spa types and to le

Vaginal Changes Due to Varying Degrees of Rectocele Prolapse: A Computational Study.

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP), downward descent of the pelvic organs resulting in a protrusion of the vagina, is a highly prevalent condition, responsible for 300,000 surgeries in the U.S. annually. Rectocele, a posterior vaginal wall (PVW) prolapse of the rectum, is the second most common type of POP after cystocele. A rectocele usually manifests itself along with other types of prolapse with multicompartment pelvic floor defects. To date, the specific mechanics of rectocele formation are poorly understood, which does not allow its early stage detection and progression prediction over time. Rec

Unexpected widespread hypophosphatemia and bone disease associated with elemental formula use in infants and children.

OBJECTIVE: Hypophosphatemia occurs with inadequate dietary intake, malabsorption, increased renal excretion, or shifts between intracellular and extracellular compartments. We noticed the common finding of amino-acid based elemental formula [EF] use in an unexpected number of cases of idiopathic hypophosphatemia occurring in infants and children evaluated for skeletal disease. We aimed to fully characterize the clinical profiles in these cases. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of children with unexplained hypophosphatemia was performed as cases accumulated from various centres in North A

Varanoid Tooth Eruption and Implantation Modes in a Late Cretaceous Mosasaur.

Erupting teeth are some of the oldest witnesses of developmental processes in the vertebrate fossil record and provide an important resource for vertebrate cladistics. Here, we have examined a mosasaur jaw fragment from central Texas using ultrathin ground section histology and 3D tomographic imaging to assess features critical for the cladistic placement of mosasaurs among varanoids vs. snakes: (i) the orientation of replacement teeth compared to the major tooth axis, (ii) the occurrence of resorption pits, and (iii) the mode of tooth implantation/attachment to the tooth bearing element (TBE)

Evidence for additional FREM1 heterogeneity in Manitoba oculotrichoanal syndrome.

PURPOSE: Manitoba Oculotrichoanal (MOTA) syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder present in First Nations families that is characterized by ocular (cryptophthalmos), facial, and genital anomalies. At the commencement of this study, its genetic basis was undefined. METHODS: Homozygosity analysis was employed to map the causative locus using DNA samples from four probands of Cree ancestry. After single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping, data were analyzed and exported to PLINK to identify regions identical by descent (IBD) and common to the probands. Candidate genes within and adjace

Liver Fat Scores Moderately Reflect Interventional Changes in Liver Fat Content by a Low-Fat Diet but Not by a Low-Carb Diet.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common metabolic disorder all over the world, mainly being associated with a sedentary lifestyle, adiposity, and nutrient imbalance. The increasing prevalence of NAFLD accommodates similar developments for type 2 diabetes and diabetes-related comorbidities and complications. Therefore, early detection of NAFLD is an utmost necessity. Potentially helpful tools for the prediction of NAFLD are liver fat indices. The fatty liver index (FLI) and the NAFLD-liver fat score (NAFLD-LFS) have been recently introduced for this aim. However, both

Efficacy and side-effect profile of sevelamer hydrochloride used in combination with conventional phosphate binders.

BACKGROUND: Poor phosphate control is common among patients with end-stage renal disease. Sevelamer hydrochloride has been demonstrated to be a safe and effective phosphate binder when used as a monotherapy. However, cost limits its usefulness in many countries. Data assessing its effectiveness and safety in combination with conventional phosphate binders are lacking. METHODS: Dialysis patients meeting the following inclusion criteria participated in this study: (i) hyperphosphataemia >1.8 mmol/L (5.6 mg/dL); and (ii) an inability to tolerate currently available binders. The trial was conduct

Feasibility of an interdisciplinary primary care-based intervention to improve care transitions for hospitalized patients with substance use disorders: The IntACT pilot randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalizations are common among individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) and represent crucial opportunities to engage patients in treatment. Quality efforts to increase SUD treatment access in hospital settings must be paired with interventions that support linkage to follow-up SUD and medical care. However, the best way to support patients with SUD during transitions of care after hospitalization is unknown. METHODS: The IntACT pilot study is a single-site randomized controlled trial that aims to assess the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a primary care-base

Genomic characterization of the emerging multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae ST6668 clone in northern Italy, 2020-2025.

Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae carrying New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM) enzymes poses a major clinical and public health challenge due to their ability to spread rapidly in hospitals, and their resistance to most β-lactam antibiotics. Following the first report of the emerging NDM-producing K. pneumoniae lineage ST6668 in Pavia, Italy, we conducted a retrospective analysis at San Raffaele Hospital (Milan). We identified 87 ST6668 isolates, several of which were collected prior to the initial report from Pavia. Whole-genome sequencing data were used to compare the Milan isolates

BK virus-associated hemorrhagic cystitis in pediatric stem cell transplantation: a case report and scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: BK virus-associated hemorrhagic cystitis (BK-HC) is a debilitating and poorly understood complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT). Hematuria, dysuria, and other symptoms associated with BK-HC are common in the immediate post-SCT period, making BK-HC difficult to distinguish from other conditions presenting with these symptoms. Despite published criteria for diagnosis, the degree to which these criteria are consistently applied to either clinical diagnosis or to studies informing BK-HC management is unclear. We present a case of BK-HC in a pediatric SCT recipi

The impact of primary headaches on disability outcomes: a literature review and meta-analysis to inform future iterations of the Global Burden of Disease study.

BACKGROUND: The burden and disability associated with headaches are conceptualized and measured differently at patients' and populations' levels. At the patients' level, through patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs); at population level, through disability weights (DW) and years lived with a disability (YLDs) developed by the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD). DW are 0-1 coefficients that address health loss and have been defined through lay descriptions. With this literature review, we aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of disability in headache disorders, and to present a coeff

Contextual factors affecting the implementation of drug checking for harm reduction: a scoping literature review from a North American perspective.

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic continues to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the US. In 2020, 83% of opioid-related overdose deaths were due to synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl. Drug checking services have been widely implemented as a harm reduction intervention to facilitate the identification of substances in a drug sample. There is a need to inform decision-making on drug checking technologies and service implementation. This research aims to outline contextual considerations for the implementation of a drug checking service. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted

Fit for LIFE: the development and optimization of an intervention delivered through prison gymnasia to support incarcerated men in making positive lifestyle changes.

BACKGROUND: Despite prison settings presenting opportunities for healthy eating and regular exercise, many incarcerated men supplement prison food with unhealthy snacks and drinks, and are less likely to achieve recommended physical activity guidelines than non-incarcerated men. This paper describes the co-development with prison staff of a healthy lifestyle intervention for delivery to incarcerated men, and feasibility testing of its delivery through prison physical education departments. METHODS: The starting point for intervention development was Football Fans in Training (FFIT), an eviden

The use of dried tube specimens of Plasmodium falciparum in an external quality assessment programme to evaluate health worker performance for malaria rapid diagnostic testing in healthcare centres in Togo.

BACKGROUND: The use of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) to diagnose malaria is common in sub-Saharan African laboratories, remote primary health facilities and in the community. Currently, there is a lack of reliable methods to ascertain health worker competency to accurately use RDTs in the testing and diagnosis of malaria. Dried tube specimens (DTS) have been shown to be a consistent and useful method for quality control of malaria RDTs; however, its application in National Quality Management programmes has been limited. METHODS: A Plasmodium falciparum strain was grown in culture and harveste

Comparative analysis of the combined petrosal and the pretemporal transcavernous anterior petrosal approach to the petroclival region.

OBJECTIVE: The combined petrosal (CP) approach has been traditionally used to resect petroclival meningioma (PCM). The pretemporal transcavernous anterior petrosal (PTAP) approach has emerged as an alternative. A quantitative comparison of both approaches has not been made. This anatomical study compared the surgical corridors afforded by both approaches and identified key elements of the approach selection process. METHODS: Twelve cadaveric specimens were dissected, and 10 were used for morphometric analysis. Groups A and B (n = 5 in each) underwent the CP and PTAP approaches, respectively.

Genotypic Differences in Networks Supporting Regional Predictors of Speech Rate in Spinocerebellar Ataxia: Preliminary Observations.

Background: Disordered speech production, dysarthria, is a common characteristic of the spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs). Although dysarthric features differ across SCAs, a previous analysis revealed that a combination of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in the left inferior frontal region and the right caudate predicted syllable rate, a pattern reported in normal speakers. This study examined the relationships between primary predictor brain regions and other areas of the brain in three SCA groups. The regions associated with the primary predictors are considered as elements of secondary net
