Thirty-one patients with primary biliary cirrhosis in whom adequate histological liver material was available were studied by immunological and histological methods. There was no statistically significant correlation between individual histological features and the level of serum mitochondrial antibodies. A relationship between the duration of symptoms and histological stage of the disease supports the present concept of its evolution. An ultracentrifugally homogeneous heat-stable polysaccharide preparation free from serologically reactive rabbit testicular tissue antigen, including cardiolipin, was extracted from the Nichols strain of Treponema pallidum, and found to react by complement-fixation with homologous rabbit sera but not with human syphilitic sera. In addition, the reactive "strain-specific" component was found to be distinct from a second reactive component within the preparation related to an antigen of T. reiteri.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), glycolipoprotein (GLP) and lipid extract were prepared from Leptospira interrogans serovar copenhageni. GLP, lipid extract or purified fatty acids from lipid extract produced cytotoxic effects seen as cell enzyme leakage followed by cytotoxic death when tested in mouse fibroblast L929 cells in tissue culture. A comparative analysis of the antihaemagglutinating, virus-neutralizing and complement-fixing activities of 19 S, 7 S, 4S and 1.5 S fractions of blood sera from goats of different ages pastured in a tick-borne encephalitis focus was carried out. Changes in the immunological activity of different fractions in relation to the age of the animals are discussed.
