Evaluation of a gaze-controlled vision enhancement system for reading in visually impaired people.

People with low vision, especially those with Central Field Loss (CFL), need magnification to read. The flexibility of Electronic Vision Enhancement Systems (EVES) offers several ways of magnifying text. Due to the restricted field of view of EVES, the need for magnification is conflicting with the need to navigate through text (panning). We have developed and implemented a real-time gaze-controlled system whose goal is to optimize the possibility of magnifying a portion of text while maintaining global viewing of the other portions of the text (condition 1). Two other conditions were implemen

Comparison of tactile, auditory, and visual modality for brain-computer interface use: a case study with a patient in the locked-in state.

This paper describes a case study with a patient in the classic locked-in state, who currently has no means of independent communication. Following a user-centered approach, we investigated event-related potentials (ERP) elicited in different modalities for use in brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. Such systems could provide her with an alternative communication channel. To investigate the most viable modality for achieving BCI based communication, classic oddball paradigms (1 rare and 1 frequent stimulus, ratio 1:5) in the visual, auditory and tactile modality were conducted (2 runs per

A theoretical framework for brain-computer interfaces: decodability, performance limits, and closed-loop adaptation.

Although brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have made significant advances in brain-signal acquisition and decoding algorithms, the theoretical foundations of BCI remain fragmented, with limited characterization of the decodability, performance bounds, and dynamic constraints of BCI systems. To address this issue, this study proposes a theoretical framework for BCIs from the perspectives of information theory and statistical decision theory. The BCI system is formalized as a closed-loop stochastic process comprising intention generation, neural encoding, signal observation, statistical decoding,

EEG-based brain-computer interface methods with the aim of rehabilitating advanced stage ALS patients.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that leads to progressive muscle weakness and paralysis, ultimately resulting in the loss of ability to communicate and control the environment. EEG-based Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) methods have shown promise in providing communication and control with the aim of rehabilitating ALS patients. In particular, P300-based BCI has been widely studied and used for ALS rehabilitation. Other EEG-based BCI methods, such as Motor Imagery (MI) based BCI and Hybrid BCI, have also shown promise in ALS rehabilitation. Nonetheless, EEG-bas

EEG motor imagery classification using deep learning approaches in naïve BCI users.

Motor Imagery (MI)-Brain Computer-Interfaces (BCI) illiteracy defines that not all subjects can achieve a good performance in MI-BCI systems due to different factors related to the fatigue, substance consumption, concentration, and experience in the use. To reduce the effects of lack of experience in the use of BCI systems (naïve users), this paper presents the implementation of three Deep Learning (DL) methods with the hypothesis that the performance of BCI systems could be improved compared with baseline methods in the evaluation of naïve BCI users. The methods proposed here are based on Con

Breast Cancer Mammograms Classification Using Deep Neural Network and Entropy-Controlled Whale Optimization Algorithm.

Breast cancer has affected many women worldwide. To perform detection and classification of breast cancer many computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been established because the inspection of the mammogram images by the radiologist is a difficult and time taken task. To early diagnose the disease and provide better treatment lot of CAD systems were established. There is still a need to improve existing CAD systems by incorporating new methods and technologies in order to provide more precise results. This paper aims to investigate ways to prevent the disease as well as to provide new met

Evaluation of Three Algorithms for the Segmentation of Overlapping Cervical Cells.

In this paper, we introduce and evaluate the systems submitted to the first Overlapping Cervical Cytology Image Segmentation Challenge, held in conjunction with the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging 2014. This challenge was organized to encourage the development and benchmarking of techniques capable of segmenting individual cells from overlapping cellular clumps in cervical cytology images, which is a prerequisite for the development of the next generation of computer-aided diagnosis systems for cervical cancer. In particular, these automated systems must detect and accuratel

Automated integration of spatial location and eye gaze tracking: An extensible multimodal system for developmental data.

Advances in computer vision and mobile sensing enable the study of development in naturalistic environments, yet existing motion tracking systems lack the integration of automated analysis and accessibility needed in developmental research. Current approaches force trade-offs between precision and ecological validity, requiring structured protocols that constrain spontaneous interactions or manual coding that cannot scale for large-scale studies of individual differences. We present an integrated system combining high-density data collection with machine learning-supported analysis using off-t

Explore the interaction mechanism between artificial synthetic food colorants and digestive proteases via multi-spectral technology and computer simulation.

This study systematically investigated the interaction mechanism between three synthetic food colorants (allura red, tartrazine, and brilliant blue) and trypsin and pepsin using various spectroscopic techniques and computer simulation methods. The results show that all three food colorants form 1:1 complex through moderate strength non-covalent interactions (mainly hydrophobic forces and hydrogen bonds). Tartrazine has a stronger binding affinity with trypsin, while allura red-pepsin system has a stronger binding affinity. The binding ability of tartrazine with trypsin is greater than that wit

The foundational role of autonomy for brain-computer interfaces.

Invasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) pose a challenge for describing human-system interactions because they involve a depth of engagement that is difficult to disentangle. This is particularly problematic when clear authorship of decisions is needed. This presupposes that such devices might also decide autonomously in certain situations. Although the use and implementation of such devices are highly disputed in practical ethics, they seem to offer at least therapeutic benefits for persons with, e.g., Parkinson's disease. That is why it is indispensable to develop a conceptual framework th

Flexible and stable cycle-by-cycle phase-locked deep brain stimulation system targeting brain oscillations in the management of movement disorders.

BACKGROUND: Precisely timed brain stimulation, such as phase-locked deep brain stimulation (PLDBS), offers a promising approach to modulating dysfunctional neural networks by enhancing or suppressing specific oscillations. However, its clinical application has been hindered by the lack of user-friendly systems and the challenge of real-time phase estimation amid stimulation artifacts. MATERIAL AND METHOD: In this work, we developed a clinically translatable PLDBS framework that enables real-time, cycle-by-cycle stimulation using standard amplifiers and a computer-in-the-loop system. Optimization of Spondylosynthesis for Certain Thoracolumbar Burst Fractures.

UNLABELLED: Intermediate transpedicular fixation, i.e. additional insertion of transpedicular screws into the injured vertebrae, is an improvement to the most popular surgical intervention for spinal injuries, currently gaining widespread use in clinical practice. Unilateral insertion of transpedicular screws into the injured vertebrae allows combining the advantages of intermediate transpedicular fixation with the possibility to perform anterior column support without remounting the transpedicular system. The aim of the study was to use biomechanical computer modeling for evaluating the stabi

PURPOSE: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) plays an integral role in treatment of renal stones. Creating percutaneous renal access is the most important and challenging step in the procedure. To facilitate this step, we evaluated our novel mobile augmented reality (AR) system for its feasibility of use for PCNL. METHODS: A tablet computer, such as an iPad[Formula: see text], is positioned above the patient with its camera pointing toward the field of intervention. The images of the tablet camera are registered with the CT image by means of fiducial markers. Structures of interest can be sup
