To create a culture of safe practices, we need to understand how and under what conditions the public makes risky decisions about their health. Because risky sexual behaviors are known to be common in young adults, we investigated their decision making regarding sexual activities that could incur a high risk of HIV infection. Sixty young urban adults maintained journals for two weeks and were interviewed regarding condom use and sexual history. We characterized four patterns of condom use behavior: consistent (35.0%), inconsistent (16.7%), consistent to inconsistent (35.0%), and inconsistent t

CONCLUSIONS: The current training led to improvements in the treatment of urethral discharge. Future training needs to be improved, especially with regard to condom promotion. Moreover, since less than one third of simulated clients were seen by p …

Sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs) remain a public health problem in Benin. However, few studies have focused on the future educators, the … ave multiple partners than women (P < 0.05). The students' views on STD transmission and the use of condoms indicated that they lacked information. About half the students said that they use condoms during sexual intercourse. We identified four groups of students, based on condom-use. This may make more effective student education possible in the future. …

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent men who have sex with men (AMSM) have high HIV incidence and low rates of HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use. There are few evidence-based HIV prevention programs that meet the unique needs of AMSM. The sequential, multiple assignment, randomized trial (SMART) program is a stepped care package of increasingly intensive eHealth interventions that were developed specifically for English- and Spanish-speaking AMSM. The sequence included universal sexuality education (SMART Sex Ed), an automated motivation and behavioral skills focused intervention (SMART Squ

BACKGROUND: Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can reduce HIV acquisition among female sex workers (FSWs). However, changes in condomless sex frequency after PrEP initiation could reduce PrEP effectiveness when PrEP adherence is suboptimal as well as increase the risk of acquiring other sexually transmitted infections. Objective measures of condomless sex may be more accurate for determining changes in sexual behavior than self-reported measures.
METHODS: We longitudinally measured self-reported condom use, number of clients, and presence of Y-chromosomal DNA (Yc-DNA) in vaginal swabs among 267 F

BACKGROUND: We assessed sexual experiences among adolescent and young adults living with HIV (AYALHIV) attending the adolescent HIV care cli … not using condom and had multiple sexual partners. Safer sexual practices such as consistent use of condoms, need to be intensified especially during counselling sessions. This could contribute to the reduction in prevalence of HIV among the adolescents in the country.

OBJECTIVE: Limited information exists on whether associations between substance use behaviors (SUBs) and sexual risk behaviors (SRBs) vary by sexual identity.
METHODS: Data from the 2015 national Youth Risk Behavior Survey (n = 15,624), were analyzed to assess associations between SUBs (cigarette smoking, alcohol use, binge drinking, marijuana use, prescription drug misuse, injection drug use, illicit drug use) and SRBs (sexual activity, number of partners, condom use). Logistic regression models calculated adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR), stratified by sexual identity, and interaction effec

BACKGROUND: In China, clients of female sex workers (CFSWs) have a low rate of condom use and a high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). However, little is known about the high-risk sexual behaviors of HIV-positive CFSWs.
METHODS: In 2014, 327 CFSWs diagnosed with HIV for 6 months or longer completed a face-to-face questionnaire for a quantitative survey. In addition, 32 HIV-positive CFSWs were recruited to participate in in-depth interviews (18 participated in both, 14 participated in-depth interviews only) to explore reasons for extramarital sexual behaviors and inconsistent c

The Food and Drug Administration approved pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has presented PrEP as a prevention option for groups at high risk such as men who have sex with men (MSM). Intervention data provide some information on how PrEP affects sexual behavior of MSM in trials, open label extensions, or clinics. However, it is unclear whether sexual risk and preventive behavioral patterns are changing in the population as a whole as PrEP becomes more widely available, whether due to PrEP use or other factors. We examin

OBJECTIVES: Low relationship power and victimization by intimate partner violence (IPV) have been linked to HIV risks among adult and adolescent women. This article examines associations of IPV and relationship power with sexual-risk behaviors and whether the associations differ by gender among South African adolescents.
METHOD: Sexual-risk behaviors (multiple partners in past 3 months; condom use at last sex), IPV, and relationship power were collected from 786 sexually experienced adolescents (mean age = 16.9) in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, during the 54-month follow-up of a HIV/se

AIM: To describe factors associated with pregnancy desire and dual method use among people living with HIV in clinical care in sub-Saharan Africa.
DESIGN: Sexually active HIV-positive adults were enrolled in 18 HIV clinics in Kenya, Namibia and Tanzania. Demographic, clinical and reproductive health data were captured by interview and medical record abstraction. Correlates of desiring a pregnancy within the next 6 months, and dual method use [defined as consistent condom use together with a highly effective method of contraception (hormonal, intrauterine device (IUD), permanent)], among those

BACKGROUND: Commercial sex is one of the major modes of HIV transmission in China. Understanding HIV risk behaviours in female sex workers (FSW) is of great importance for prevention. This study aims to assess the magnitude and temporal changes of risk behaviours in Chinese FSW.
METHOD: Five electronic databases were searched to identify peer-reviewed English and Chinese language articles published between January 2000 and December 2012 that reported risk behaviours among FSW in China, including condom use, HIV testing, and drug use. Linear regression and Spearman's rank correlation were used

BACKGROUND: Sexually active adolescents in Ghana are increasingly at risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. As a primary agent of socialization, the family can exert a strong influence on adolescent sexual behaviour. Therefore, to aid in the design and implementation of effective prevention programmes, it is important to understand the role of the family in influencing sexual behaviour among school-going adolescents.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between family communications about HIV/AIDS and sexual activity and condom use among school-going adolescents in Accra,
