INTRODUCTION: The retained medullary cord (RMC) is a newly defined entity of closed spinal dysraphism that is thought to originate from regression failure of the medullary cord during the last phase of secondary neurulation. The terminal myelocystocele (TMC) is an unusual type of closed spinal dysraphism, characterized by localized cystic dilatation of the terminal part of the central canal that then herniates through a posterior spinal bifida. The co-occurrence of RMC and TMC is extremely rare.

An 11-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for anorexia, lethargy and weight loss of 6 days' duration. Bilateral mydriasis, absent menace response, slow-to-absent pupillary light reflexes, bilateral retinal detachment, intermittent horizontal nystagmus, intermittent ventral strabismus and systemic hypertension were present. Biochemical analysis revealed severe hyponatremia, severe hypochloremia and mild hypokalemia. Multifocal central nervous system disease was suspected based on optic, trigeminal sensory (ophthalmic branch), vestibulocochlear and possible oculomotor ner

BACKGROUND: Tarlov or perineural cysts are dilations of nerve roots resulting from a pathologically increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure. Although it is very common in the general population, most of these cysts remain asymptomatic. In some cases, they can evolve and exert pressure on neural elements, independently from their initial size.
CASE REPORT: In this paper, we describe the case of a 33-year-old female known to have asymptomatic multiple and large radicular and pelvic Tarlov cysts. One cyst located in the right pelvic space progressed acutely after delivery, inducing a painful scia

This study compared percutaneous sclerotherapy using 50% acetic acid with that using 99% ethanol for patients with simple renal cysts. The study included 72 simple renal cysts in 64 patients (male/female ratio = 31/33; age range, 31-75 years). Under fluoroscopic guidance, the cyst fluid was aspirated completely. Sclerotherapy was then performed using 50% acetic acid for 32 cysts and 99% ethanol for 40 cysts. The volumes of each renal cyst before and after sclerotherapy were compared using ultrasonography or CT. Medical records were reviewed to analyse any complications. The mean follow-up peri…

Four cysts are described that expanded and destroyed the bone of the petrous apex. All patients with these cysts had a sensorineural hearing loss. Mild symptoms referable to cranial nerves VI, VII, IX, X, XI, and XII were seen also. The cysts range in size from 1.5 X 1.5 X 3 cm to 5 X 5 X 6 cm. Grossly and histologically, they were distinct from any lesions seen previously. The lesions were large and contained glistening brown, watery fluid filled with cholesterol crystals. The cyst wall was predominantly fibrous tissue without an epithelium. Minimal chronic inflammatory change and granuloma f

Pulmonary hydatid cyst during pregnancy is extremely rare and life-threatening for the mother and fetus. Throughout pregnancy, hydatid cysts may enlarge due to the suppression of cellular immunity and steroids secreted from the placenta. In late pregnancy, the cysts can reach a huge volume with an increased risk for subsequent rupture due to the compression of the enlarging uterus and anaphylactic shock. Intrabronchial rupture is a rare and life-threatening complication of pulmonary hydatid cysts. It is vital to diagnose it as early as possible and manage patients with surgical intervention wi

A 40-year-old female, who was being treated for a urinary tract infection, was admitted to the hospital due to a gradually increasing left flank colic pain. An ultrasound investigation detected right-sided hydronephrosis, and a computed tomography scan additionally showed large cystic changes in both the fallopian tubes, which were compressing the ureters and thus causing hydronephrosis. Subsequently, magnetic resonance imaging was performed, which demonstrated fluid-fluid levels inside the cystic changes. The differential diagnosis included a deep pelvic endometriotic cyst and a pyosalpinx.

Pseudomeningocele is cerebrospinal fluid collection in an extradural area after meningeal tear. The size of the defect in the dura-arachnoid, the pressure of spinal fluid, and the resistance of the soft tissue presumably determine the size of the pseudocyst. The main symptoms are often: headache, neck pain and myelopathic and radicular signs. Pseudomeningocele is diagnosed by myelography, sonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. We present a case of intraoperative identification nerve root entrapment by pseudomeningocele cyst and postoperative recovery of a patient's ne

BACKGROUND: Teratoma is the second most common mediastinal neoplasm, but malignant transformation in mature teratomas is uncommon, and cases of carcinoid tumor with teratoma are described in only a few studies. In addition, multilocular thymic cyst associated with mature mediastinal teratoma is also a rare entity. There have been no reports of case with the coexistence of these three pathological lesions.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 24-year-old man who was referred to our hospital due to a 2-day history of left shoulder pain, a feeling of severe chest tightness and high fever. Pre-op

BACKGROUND: Radiological diagnoses of posterior fossa cystic abnormalities during antenatal and postnatal periods pose significant challenges as they may have similar early imaging features. Some of the frequently described entities are arachnoid cysts and Dandy-Walker malformations. Blake's pouch cyst is relatively underdiagnosed. The main aim of the study was to explore these diagnostic challenges in the context of various descriptive terminologies and their prognostic implications.
METHODS: We illustrate this through our case, where fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 36 weeks gestat

RATIONALE: Pial arteriovenous fistula (PAVF) occurs when intracranial arteries communicate directly with veins. PAVFs are very rare congenital vascular lesions that are commonly seen in infants and children. Arachnoid cysts are congenital cavitation often filled with cerebrospinal fluid. We present a very rare associated occurrence of bilateral pediatric PAVF and a giant arachnoid cyst presenting as torticollis in a child. So far, this is the first case.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 6-year-old male child was referred to our facility from a local hospital due to severe torticollis.

What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Simple renal cysts are a common entity, which may need observation and follow-up or treatment. The study, for the first time, systematically reviews the indications for follow-up or radiological treatment of simple renal cysts. To review the conservative and radiological management of simple renal cysts a systematic literature review was performed. Simple renal cysts are commonly found in the adult population. Increasing age is highly associated with its incidence. When they remain asymptomatic they require neither treatment nor follow-

The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is occasionally seen after hypothalamic injury or dysfunction, although it typically occurs in association with other endocrine disturbances. It is has never been described as a presenting feature of a suprasellar arachnoid cyst (SAC) in the pediatric population. The authors describe the case of an enlarging SAC resulting in SIADH as the only presenting feature, with an otherwise normal hypothalamic-pituitary axis. An SAC was diagnosed in utero in this 5-month-old girl who had a normal functioning hypothalamic-pituitary axis

A seven-year-old girl was referred to our clinic with absent eyelids and a mass which was gradually increasing in size from the right orbit. The child was diagnosed to have Fraser syndrome (cryptophthalmos, abnormal genitalia, mental deficiency, renal agenesis and abnormal ears). On examination, there was cryptophthalmos and a cystic swelling arising from the right orbit. The cyst was removed. On gross examination, there was a posterior eyeball with normal optic nerve. Placed in the anterior part of the eyeball was a cyst measuring about 2 cm in diameter filled with a yellow-coloured fluid. Th

The clinical, radiologic and pathological findings in two cases of neuroepithelial cyst of the posterior fossa are described. The first patient was a 43-year-old woman who presented with clumsiness of the hands, gait disturbance and slurring of speech. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a large cystic structure between the cerebellum and the brain stem on the left side, accompanied by compression of the medulla oblongata and displacement of the forth ventricle to the right. The second patient was an 11-month-old boy who presented with progressive bulbar dysfunction. He had previously un

Paraurethral cysts are rare and occur with obstruction of the Skene duct. In this case, we aimed to present a paraurethral cyst in a baby girl. A 4-day-old newborn was consulted for pediatric urology because of an interlabial mass. In genital examination, a noninvasive mass measuring 2 × 1.5 cm was observed in the interlabial region, and the introitus was completely closed. Ultrasonography showed a cystic lesion localized on the right side of the urethra with a smoothly contoured, thin-walled, hypoechoic structure. The patient underwent puncture under sterile conditions. The content of the mas

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung diseases are commonly seen in association with Sjögren's disease, especially lymphoproliferative disorders, such as lymphoid interstitial pneumonia. In occasional and rare cases, pulmonary amyloidosis with cysts, nodules, and/or ground-glass opacites as radiological features, can also become a complication of Sjögren's disease. On the other hand, diffuse cystic lung disease, without nodules, concomitant with chylous fluid accumulation in female leads to initial suspicion of lymphangioleiomyomatosis. Interestingly, it's challenging to differentiate if diffuse cysti
