Forty female patients with urethrocystitis received sparfloxacin in a daily dose 400 mg for 20 days in combination with canefron H (50 drops three times a day for 8 weeks). Twenty patients received one more course of canefron H 4 months after etiopathogenetic therapy. The analysis of the treatment results allows the conclusion that sparfloxacin is highly effective in urethrocystitis associated with intracellular infections. Emphysematous cystitis is a rare disorder that is usually associated with immunosuppression, poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, and other risk factors such as previous urinary tract infection and/or recent instrumentation of the urinary tract. The case of an 89-year-old woman with emphysematous cystitis who had no evidence of immunodeficiency or other risk factors except for advanced age is reported. A review of the literature on emphysematous cystitis in immunocompetent, nondiabetic individuals is presented.

Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 100; age, 3 wk) were fed diets that included a vitamin premix and either albumin or milk powder. Rats fed the albumin diet gained weight more slowly than did the other group. Between 19 and 28 wk of being fed the albumin diet, 12 rats died of bacterial cystitis and pyelonephritis. A 46-year-old man was transferred to our hospital because of a bladder mass. The mass could not be distinguished from a primary bladder tumor or a tumor invading from another organ with computed tomography, magnetic resonance, or cystoscopic examination. Transurethral resection of the mass was performed, and the pathological diagnosis was typical cystitis glandularis. The patient has been followed up with cytologic examination and ultrasonography, and after 10 months there has been no new growth of the mass or malignant change.

Eosinophilic cystitis is a rare inflammatory condition of the urinary bladder of unknown aetiology and characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the bladder wall. We report the unique MR findings of eosinophilic cystitis in an 8-year-old girl who presented with peripheral eosinophilia. MR imaging revealed smooth and nearly circumferential thickening of the bladder wall showing distinct low signal intensity on T2-weighted images, which may histologically represent high cellularity due to massive eosinophilic infiltration.
