Detrusor underactivity in men with lower urinary tract symptoms/benign prostatic obstruction: characterization and potential impact on indications for surgical treatment of the prostate.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Detrusor underactivity is a highly prevalent type of voiding dysfunction in men and responsible for residual urine and decreased voiding efficiency. Patients with detrusor underactivity have an unfavorable outcome after prostatic surgery and do not have better long-term results than untreated detrusor underactivity patients. Therefore, differentiation between detrusor underactivity and bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) is crucial for the prediction of the outcome of prostatic surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Patients with detrusor underactivity report more frequently about decrease

A differential geometric approach to automated segmentation of human airway tree.

Airway diseases are frequently associated with morphological changes that may affect the physiology of the lungs. Accurate characterization of airways may be useful for quantitatively assessing prognosis and for monitoring therapeutic efficacy. The information gained may also provide insight into the underlying mechanisms of various lung diseases. We developed a computerized scheme to automatically segment the 3-D human airway tree depicted on computed tomography (CT) images. The method takes advantage of both principal curvatures and principal directions in differentiating airways from other

Microarray analysis of differentially expressed genes in the kidneys and testes of mice after long-term irradiation with low-dose-rate gamma-rays.

Measuring global gene expression using cDNA or oligonucleotide microarrays is an effective approach to understanding the complex mechanisms of the effects of radiation. However, few studies have been carried out that investigate gene expression in vivo after prolonged exposure to low-dose-rate radiation. In this study, C57BL/6J mice were continuously irradiated with gamma-rays for 485 days at dose-rates of 0.032-13 microGy/min. Gene expression profiles in the kidney and testis from irradiated and unirradiated mice were analyzed, and differentially expressed genes were identified. A combination

Anti-apoptotic role of retinoic acid in the inner ear of noise-exposed mice.

Exposure to loud noise can induce temporary or permanent hearing loss, and acoustic trauma is the major cause of hearing impairment in industrial nations. However, the mechanisms underlying the death of hair cells after acoustic trauma remain unclear. In addition to its involvement in cellular stress and apoptosis, the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), a member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase family, is involved in cell survival, transformation, embryonic morphogenesis, and differentiation. JNK is primarily activated by various environmental stresses including noise, and the phenotypic re

Discrimination between normal and glaucomatous eyes with the Topographic Scanning System: a preliminary report.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability of the Topographic Scanning System (TopSS; Laser Diagnostic Technologies, San Diego, CA) to differentiate individuals with glaucoma from normal subjects. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The subjects were divided into two groups: primary open-angle glaucoma and normal. All individuals underwent a complete ophthalmic evaluation, a 24-2 full threshold Humphrey visual field evaluation, and a TopSS examination. Cut-off points were selected, receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves were created, and sensitivity and specificity were calculated for individ

Voltage-activated proton currents in human THP-1 monocytes.

Depolarization-activated H+-selective currents were studied using whole-cell and excised-patch voltage clamp methods in human monocytic leukemia THP-1 cells, before and after being induced by phorbol ester to differentiate into macrophage-like cells. The H+ conductance, gH, activated slowly during depolarizing pulses, with a sigmoidal time course. Fitted by a single exponential following a delay, the activation time constant, tauact was roughly 10 sec at threshold potentials, decreasing at more positive potentials. Tail currents upon repolarization decayed mono-exponentially at all potentials.

Sex Differences in Left Ventricular Remodeling for Risk Stratification of Patients With Aortic Regurgitation.

IMPORTANCE: Left ventricular (LV) dilatation is an established prognosticator in aortic regurgitation (AR). Current guidelines recommend aortic valve surgery (AVS) using LV end-systolic diameter index (LVESDi) with a uniform threshold, irrespective of sex. While LV end-systolic volume index (LVESVi) may better characterize LV remodeling, it was only recently included in European guideline recommendations, with a threshold of 45 mL/m2 for both men and women. OBJECTIVE: To assess sex differences in LV remodeling using linear and volumetric dimensions and their association with outcomes in AR.

Utility of Acoustic Change Complex as an Objective Tool to Evaluate Difference Limen for Intensity in Cochlear Hearing Loss and Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder.

Purpose This study aimed to investigate usefulness of acoustic change complex (ACC) as an objective measure of difference limen for intensity (DLI) in auditory neuropathy spectrum disorders (ANSD) and cochlear hearing loss (CHL). Method The study used a multiple static group comparison research design. Twenty normal-hearing individuals (NH), 19 individuals with ANSD, and 23 individuals with CHL underwent DLI measurement using behavioral (psychoacoustic) techniques and ACC. For eliciting ACC, a 500-ms, 1,000-Hz pure tone was presented at 80 dB SPL. Additionally, six variants of this stimulus wi

Imidazenil: a low efficacy agonist at alpha1- but high efficacy at alpha5-GABAA receptors fail to show anticonvulsant cross tolerance to diazepam or zolpidem.

Whereas advances in the molecular biology of GABA(A) receptor complex using knock-out and knock-in mice have been valuable in unveiling the structure, composition, receptor assembly, and several functions of different GABA(A) receptor subtypes, the mechanism(s) underlying benzodiazepine (BZ) tolerance and withdrawal remain poorly understood. Studies using specific GABA(A) receptor subunit knock-in mice suggest that tolerance to sedative action of diazepam requires long-term activation of alpha1 and alpha5 GABA(A) receptor subunits. We investigated the role of long-term activation of these GABA

MyD88-dependent immune response contributes to hearing loss in experimental pneumococcal meningitis.

Hearing loss is one of the most common sequelae in survivors of pneumococcal meningitis, affecting up to 26% of them. Here, we established the first mouse model of meningitis-associated hearing loss and investigated the role played by the Toll-like receptor-associated adapter molecule MyD88. C57BL/6 mice were infected intracisternally by Streptococcus pneumoniae. By use of audiometry and histological analysis, cochleae were assessed in uninfected control mice during the acute stage and after recovery. MyD88-deficient mice were analyzed 24 h after infection. Wild-type mice lost hearing capacity

Alterations of membrane properties and effects of D-serine on NMDA-induced current in rat anterior cingulate cortex neurons after monoarthritis.

Accumulated evidence implicates the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in pain processing. The activation of the NMDA receptor requires the occupation of both the glutamate site and the glycine site. d-Serine released by astrocytes is presumed to be an endogenous ligand for the glycine site of the NMDA receptor. Using whole-cell patch clamp recording, membrane characteristics and effects of exogenous d-serine on NMDA-evoked currents were examined in neurons in ACC slices from normal and complete Freund's adjuvant-induced monoarthritic rats. Neurons from rats with monoarthritis exhibited more depo

'CatWalk' automated quantitative gait analysis as a novel method to assess mechanical allodynia in the rat; a comparison with von Frey testing.

A characteristic symptom of neuropathic pain is mechanical allodynia. In animal models of neuropathic pain, mechanical allodynia is often assessed using von Frey filaments. Although the forces applied with these filaments are highly reproducible, there are various disadvantages of using this method. Testing paradigms and definitions of withdrawal threshold are not standardised. Moreover, measurements may be influenced by various conditions, such as ambient temperature, humidity, weight bearing of the limb and stress. We have therefore investigated another technique to assess mechanical allodyn

[Improvement in the objective diagnosis of hearing disorders by a new technique of simultaneous recording of acoustic and electrical responses of the auditory system].

The measurements of transitory evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and auditory brainstem responses (ABR) are widely used in objective audiometry for the diagnosis of conductive or sensorineural hearing losses. In some cases only one of these signals is required for a complete diagnosis, while other cases may require both methods to define findings. With conventional equipment the measurement of TEOAE and ABR is performed with different devices at different times. Devices for simultaneous recording of both signals are currently not available or described, although the physiological circumstan

Observations on the recovery of sensation following inferior alveolar nerve injuries.

The recovery of sensation to the lower lip and chin following unilateral inferior alveolar or mental nerve injuries has been examined in 21 adult patients for periods of up to 45 months. Sensory testing was performed using light touch, pin prick and thermal stimuli as well as testing for sharp/blunt differentiation, localisation and two-point discrimination. The area of anaesthesia to light touch stimuli had disappeared by 4 months after nerve compression and by 3.5-8 months after nerve section, but persisted after nerve section if nerve regeneration was impeded. In this latter group there was
