Disrupted 'reflection' impulsivity in cannabis users but not current or former ecstasy users.

Evidence for serotonin involvement in impulsivity has generated interest in the measurement of impulsivity in regular ecstasy users, who are thought to display serotonergic dysfunction. However, current findings are inconsistent. Here, we used a recently developed Information Sampling Test to measure 'reflection' impulsivity in 46 current ecstasy users, 14 subjects who used ecstasy in the past, 15 current cannabis users and 19 drug-naïve controls. Despite elevated scores on the Impulsivity subscale of the Eysenck Impulsiveness-Venturesomeness-Empathy questionnaire, the current and previous ecs

Iowa gambling task in schizophrenia: a review and new data in patients with schizophrenia and co-occurring cannabis use disorders.

BACKGROUND: We reviewed previous studies comparing schizophrenia patients and healthy subjects for performance on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) (a laboratory task designed to measure emotion-based decision-making), and found mixed results. We hypothesize that deficits in IGT performance in schizophrenia may be more specifically related to concurrent substance use disorders. To test this hypothesis, we compared schizophrenia patients with (SCZ((+))) or without (SCZ((-))) cannabis use disorders, to healthy subjects, on measures of cognition and IGT performance. METHODS: A comprehensive battery o

The role of cluster B and C personality disturbance in the course of depression: a prospective study.

The association between personality disturbance and depression has been noted consistently. Prospective tests of personality's impact on the course of depression, however, are lacking. In a sample of 159 undergraduates who experienced at least one prospective depressive episode, dimensional scores for clusters B and C personality disturbance were examined as prospective predictors of four indicators of the course of depression: severity, episode duration, symptomatic chronicity and number of episodes. Cluster C personality disturbance, characterized by anxious and fearful features, predicted d

Confirmatory factor analysis of parents' and teachers' ratings of DSM-IV symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in a Spanish sample.

Confirmatory factor analysis examined the factor structure of DSM IV Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder symptoms and analyzed the differences in informants' ratings of ADHD symptoms by children's age and sex. A sample of 1,018 Spanish school children, 574 girls and 444 boys, ages 4 to 12 years, was rated by teachers and parents. Confirmatory factor analysis showed a similar fit for the three-factor model of Inattention, Hyperactivity, and Impulsivity (teachers: CFI = .976, RMR = .041, % of total variance = 83.2; parents: CFI = .969, RMR = .037, % of total variance = 82.7) and for the two

DSM-IV alcohol and substance abuse and dependence in homeless youth.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to describe endorsement rates of substance use criteria among homeless adolescents and to evaluate the reliability of diagnostic formulations among a group of adolescents who use more frequently and more heavily than other samples of adolescents. METHOD: Substance use rates and DSM-IV abuse and dependence criteria were assessed among 198 (109 male) homeless youths between the ages of 13 and 19, as part of a larger study. Endorsement rates and reliability analyses were completed for diagnostic criteria assessed for alcohol, marijuana, amphetamines and he

Self-exclusion program: a longitudinal evaluation study.

Few self-exclusion programs have been evaluated and their long-term impact remains unknown. This study has two main goals: (1) to assess changes in gambling behaviour and gambling problems for self-excluded patrons, and (2) to follow self-excluded gamblers for a two-year period (during and after the self-exclusion period). Individuals who excluded themselves (N = 161 at the initial stage) participated in telephone interviews after signing the self-exclusion agreement and were followed at 6, 12, 18 and 24-months. Results show that according to the DSM-IV, 73.1% of the participants were patholog

The factors associated with impulse control behaviors in Parkinson's disease: A 2-year longitudinal retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Impulse control behaviors (ICBs) are impulsive-compulsive behaviors often associated with dopamine replacement therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD). Although remission can occur in ICB, only four reports on the ratio of remission and the persistence of ICB have been published, and the associated factors with ICB remission or persistence have been little known. Therefore, we conducted a longitudinal assessment of the remission, persistence, and development of ICB and those associated factors in patients with PD. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated a PD database at Aomori Pref

Psychiatric comorbidity associated with DSM-IV ADHD in a nonreferred sample of twins.

OBJECTIVE: To test the external validity of the dimensions and subtypes of DSM-IV attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by assessing the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity. METHOD: Eight- to 18-year-old twins with ADHD (n = 105) and without ADHD (n = 95) were recruited through local school districts. Comorbid disorders were assessed by structured diagnostic interviews with the parent and child and by a behavioral rating scale completed by the child's classroom teacher. RESULTS: Symptoms of inattention were associated with lower intelligence and higher levels of depression, where

Disrupted functional networks within white-matter served as neural features in adolescent patients with conduct disorder.

BACKGROUND: Conduct disorder (CD) has been conceptualized as a psychiatric disorder associated with white-matter (WM) structural abnormalities. Although diffusion tensor imaging could identify WM structural architecture changes, it cannot characterize functional connectivity (FC) within WM. Few studies have focused on disentangling the WM dysfunctions in CD patients by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: The resting-state fMRI data were first obtained from both adolescent CD and typically developing (TD) controls. A voxel-based clustering analysis was utilized to iden

Evaluation of clinical prognostic models for suicide attempts after a major depressive episode.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we compare the performance of prognostic models of increasing complexity for prediction of future suicide attempt. METHOD: Using data from a 2-year prospective study of 304 depressed subjects, a series of Cox proportional hazard regression models were developed to predict future suicide attempt. The models were evaluated in terms of discrimination (the ability to rank subjects in order of risk), calibration (accuracy of predicted probabilities of attempt), and sensitivity and specificity of risk group stratification based on cross-validated predicted probabilities.

Impulse control disorder in PD: A lateralized monoaminergic frontostriatal disconnection syndrome?

BACKGROUND: Impulse Control Disorder symptoms (ICD) in Parkinson's disease (PD) has been recently associated by magnetic Resonance imaging with impaired cortico-striatal connectivity, especially between left putamen and frontal associative areas. METHODS: 84 patients entered the study (21 PD-ICD+ and 64 PD-ICD-) and underwent DATSCAN imaging. The striatal tracer uptake was evaluated using BRASS software (Hermes, Sweden). The whole-brain analysis was performed with Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM). RESULTS: PD-ICD+ showed a significant reduction of left putaminal and left inferior frontal

Social cognition in Intermittent Explosive Disorder and aggression.

Social-emotional information processing (SEIP) was assessed in individuals with current DSM-5 Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED: n = 100) and in healthy (n = 100) and psychiatric (n = 100) controls using a recently developed and validated self-rated questionnaire. SEIP vignettes depicted both direct aggressive and relationally aggressive scenarios of a socially ambiguous nature and were followed by questions assessing subjects' reactions and judgments about the vignettes. IED subjects differed from both healthy and psychiatric controls in all SEIP components. While hostile attribution was h

[Phenotypic variability of the 1q21.1 microdeletion syndrome in members of the same family: relevance of detection of neuropsychiatric disorders for diagnosis of genetic syndromes].

INTRODUCTION: 1q21.1 microdeletion syndrome is a caused by a recurrent deletion of the 1q21.1 copy-number variant, which spans 800 kb and includes at least seven genes. It is associated with a variable phenotype. Neuropsychiatric abnormalities have been previously described in many of the previously reported cases, but its true prevalence is unknown. AIM: To illustrate the phenotypic variability in 1q21.1 microdeletion syndrome. CASE REPORTS: Four individuals of the same kindred harboring a 1.74-Mb deletion within 1q21.1 are included. In our patients a heterogeneous phenotype is recognized.

Reduced dopamine transporter binding predates impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Impulse control disorders (ICD) are relatively common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and generally are regarded as adverse effects of dopamine replacement therapy, although certain demographic and clinical risk factors are also involved. Previous single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) studies showed reduced ventral striatal dopamine transporter binding in Parkinson patients with ICD compared with patients without. Nevertheless, these studies were performed in patients with preexisting impulse control impairments, which impedes clear-cut interpretation of these findings. We retrospecti

Failure of stop and go in de novo Parkinson's disease--a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Behavioral impairments in response inhibition and initiation are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and are associated with reduced impulse control. No prior study, however, has investigated the functional correlates of response inhibition in de novo PD. Twenty-one de novo PD patients and 37 matched healthy controls performed a stop-signal task during functional magnetic resonance imaging. The results showed that PD patients, compared with healthy controls, were slower on response initiation but not inhibition. Task-related activation of the response inhibition network, including the inferior

Impulse control disorders and depression in Finnish patients with Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Impulse control disorders occur frequently in patients with Parkinson's disease. However, the frequencies have been investigated mainly in patients from secondary or tertiary care centers, and thus, the prevalence rates in general community are not known. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to study the prevalence rates of impulse control disorders and related factors in a large, non-selected sample of Parkinson's disease patients. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among Parkinson's disease patients from Finnish Parkinson Association [n = 575; 365 men, 240 women, median a

Suicidal and death ideation in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, disabling illness affecting primarily the elderly and is associated with a high prevalence of depression. Although these are known risk factors for suicidal and death ideation, little is known about the prevalence and correlates of such ideation in PD. A convenience sample of 116 outpatients with idiopathic PD at two movement disorders centers were administered a modified Paykel Scale for suicidal and death ideation, as well as an extensive psychiatric, neuropsychological, and neurological battery. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models we
