Cocaine use disorder and risk of acute coronary syndromes in adults with unhealthy drinking.

Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a significant public health issue, and cocaine's common pairing with alcohol has been linked to adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Among adults with unhealthy alcohol use, we investigated whether co-occurring CUD was associated with excess risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We retrospectively studied 413,511 adults in Northern California from June 1, 2013 to December 31, 2022, with documented unhealthy alcohol use, defined as exceeding either the daily limit and/or weekly drinking limits recommended by the U.S. National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism …

What is the impact of the UK soft drinks industry levy on childhood tooth decay?

DESIGN: Interrupted time series analysis. DATA ANALYSIS: An interrupted time series (ITS) analysis was conducted to determine if there was an association between the announcement and implementation of the soft drinks industry levy (SDIL) and rates of hospital admission for tooth extractions due to dental caries in children. Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) were used on hospital admissions for tooth extraction of one or more primary or permanent tooth due to a primary diagnosis of dental caries in children aged 0-18 years attending a National Health Service (NHS) hospital in England from Janu

Do the Effects of Alcohol Excise Taxes Differ by Drinking Level and by Income Level?

We study the effect of excise alcohol taxes on ethanol consumption and prices paid for alcohol purchases. For our analysis, we exploit an unexpected and large increase in excise taxes that substantially raised alcohol prices in the state of Illinois in 2009. We combine rich, nationally representative household-level data on alcohol purchases with a synthetic control approach that allows us to compare prices paid and purchasing behavior in Illinois with the same behaviors in a weighted set of control states. We show that heavy and moderate drinkers reduced their ethanol consumption by a similar

Understanding effects of the group process on drinking outcomes for emerging adults experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: There is little research on group process for motivational interviewing-based group interventions with young people. We examine how change talk, group climate and cohesion, and facilitator empathy among emerging adults experiencing homelessness affect their drinking outcomes. METHODS: Data come from a clinical trial at three drop-in centers serving emerging adults experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles County and focus on those who received the intervention (n = 132). Participants completed baseline, 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up surveys. They were predominantly male and non-wh…

Decoding the Effect of Running on Flavor Perception Changes during Consumption of Sports Drinks.

An online survey was conducted to show that most respondents preferred sports drinks with sweet and fruity characteristics. Eleven sports drinks with higher consumers' preferences were further selected for aroma and taste evaluation. Temporal dominance of sensations analysis showed that fruity and fresh attributes were dominant, while sour and fruity sweet were dominant tastes during consumption. β-Damascenone, β-ionone, and linalool contributing to floral perception, γ-decalactone, ethyl cinnamate, and isoamyl acetate contributing to fruity perception, and menthol contributing to fresh percep

Negotiating situational abstinence and moderation: a study of regular and heavy-drinking young Nigerians.

Studies that have examined young people's drinking behaviour, particularly how they abstain from alcohol or drink lightly and their motivations, have focused on Western contexts. Currently, studies on how and why young Africans abstain from alcohol or drink moderately are lacking. Therefore, there is a need to examine young people's drinking behaviours/practices on the continent to facilitate health promotion interventions. This study, which uses qualitative data elicited from 53 participants, explores how young Nigerian men and women who consume alcohol and drink heavily enact and negotiate a…

Haloketones: A class of unregulated priority DBPs with high contribution to drinking water cytotoxicity.

Although unregulated aliphatic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) had a much higher concentration and cytotoxicity than known aromatic DBPs, a recent study indicated that seven classes of regulated and unregulated priority DBPs (one and two-carbon-atom DBPs) just accounted for 16.2% of disinfected water cytotoxicity in the U.S., meaning some of the highly toxic aliphatic DBPs may be overlooked. Haloketones (HKs) are an essential class of priority DBPs with a 1-100 µg/L concentration in drinking water but lack cytotoxicity data. This study investigated the cytotoxicity of seven HKs using Chinese ha…

Effects of self- and experimenter-administered cocaine on subsequent ethanol drinking in rhesus monkeys.

BACKGROUND: One possible reason for the lack of FDA-approved pharmacotherapies to treat cocaine use disorder (CUD) is that, although cocaine is typically used in combination with alcohol, it is studied in isolation in preclinical studies. A better understanding of the cocaine-alcohol interactions that promote polysubstance use (PSU) will improve animal models of CUD and hasten pharmacotherapy development. We used a rhesus monkey model of cocaine-alcohol PSU to investigate one possible mechanism: that alcohol is used to mitigate negative effects associated with termination of cocaine use. METH

Pre-operative carbohydrate drink in pediatric spine fusion: randomized control trial.

PURPOSE: As rapid discharge protocols for pediatric spine fusion shorten stays, gastrointestinal (GI) complications are uncovered and cause delays in discharge. A pre-operative carbohydrate (CHO) drink has been shown to improve perioperative GI symptoms and functional return but has not been examined in pediatric spine patients. We aimed to determine if a preoperative CHO drink is safe in pediatric spine fusion patients, and if it improves their comfort scores and return of bowel function. METHODS: We prospectively randomized ASA-1 and -2 pediatric spine fusion patients to either a pre-anesth

Identifying In-the-Moment Reasons for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder-Related Drinking: A Qualitative Investigation.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) confers considerable risk for alcohol-related harms. Trauma-exposed individuals may turn to alcohol in response to intrusive trauma-related symptoms (e.g., memories, flashbacks, nightmares) or distressing trauma-related emotions, with such desires to drink shifting dynamically in-the-moment in response to PTSD symptoms. However, the in-the-moment reasons for drinking that may underlie these dynamic processes remain largely unknown. The present qualitative study aimed to identify key in-the-moment PTSD-related reasons for drinking. Focus groups of frequent d…

Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Response to RedBull® Energy Drink Intake in Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: Energy drinks contain caffeine, taurine, sucrose, vitamins, and other amino acids. The dosage of these varies depending on the drink chosen. Several studies on energy drinks have been carried out, but the results obtained are still inconsistent as well as the risk associated with consumption. This study analyzed the cardio- and cerebrovascular responses after consumption of an energy drink - RedBull® - under standardized pre- and post-ingestion conditions and its impact on the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular system. METHODS: A sample of 30 healthy young adult females was recrui

An exploratory factor analysis of an e-CHUG drinking motives scale with mandated students.

OBJECTIVE: Colleges maintain alcohol policies in response to student alcohol misuse, and sanctions for violating these policies often mandate students to attend alcohol education and/or counseling (Anderson & Gadaleto, 2021). Electronic Checkup to Go (e-CHUG) is a widely used online motivational intervention program that provides feedback to college students to encourage them to alter their drinking behaviors (eCheckup to Go, 2021). While measures included in e-CHUG have clear clinical utility, their psychometric properties have not been evaluated. The present study was designed to evaluate th…

Microfluidic Analysis for the Determination of Protein Content in Different Types of Plant-Based Drinks.

The widespread consumption of plant-based drinks, driven by health and dietary reasons (including cow's milk allergy, lactose intolerance, milk protein intolerance, following a vegetarian or vegan diet) necessitates automated and accurate test methods. Our study demonstrates the simultaneous determination of protein components and total protein concentrations in plant-based milk alternatives using a rapid and reproducible microchip gel electrophoretic method. As expected, the electrophoretic profiles of each plant-based drink differed. Based on our analyses and statistical evaluation, it can b
