Xeroradiographic lymphangiography was carried out at approximately monthly intervals on five dogs during the first 18 weeks following infection with 400 Brugia pahangi infective larvae in the left rear paw. Clinical signs, body temperatures and microfilaria counts were also monitored during this time. Similar observations were made on nine dogs with chronic infections (one to five years duration) of 200 infective larvae in unilateral inguinal sites. Standard thoracic radiography was conducted on all dogs. Surgical occlusion of the major afferent ducts to the popliteal lymph nodes of the infect

Vaccination of inbred jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) with 60cobalt radiation-attenuated Brugia malayi infective stage larvae (L3) protected against homologous challenge given either subcutaneously (sc) or by the intraperitoneal route (ip). At necropsy numerous nodules were recovered from the peritoneal cavities of jirds which had been vaccinated sc and challenged ip. Histopathologic analysis showed these to be granulomas containing dead and dying larvae and transmission electron microscopy showed that eosinophils were present in high numbers around and within the larvae. Structural damage to th

The transmission of Brugia pahangi from Aedes aegypti into Meriones unguiculatus was compared for four different skin surfaces (HAIRY, CLOTH, CLEAN, GREASY). Unshaven jirds reduced the feeding avidity of infective mosquitoes. The loss of larvae from infective mosquitoes was greatest when these insects fed on "exposed" skin surfaces. Significantly fewer infective larvae penetrated the host when infective mosquitoes fed on a jird through a thin layer of cloth.

A study on the adverse reactions, occurring after treating microfilaremic patients infected with B. malayi, revealed that all reacted to a single oral dose of DEC (5 mg/kg). The major reactions were fever, headache, anorexia, abdominal pain, muscle and joint pains, nausea and vomiting. There seemed to be no association between the time of fever onset and microfilarial density, but the number of cases observed was too small to make any firm conclusion. There was a tendency for more severe reactions to occur in patients with higher microfilaria counts. Local reactions, probably due to destructio

A combined weekly low dosage and short term standard dose treatment with diethylcarbamazine (DEC) to control Timorian filariasis is described. Weekly low dosage DEC was distributed by the village chief to all villagers for 6 months. The dosage of DEC was 50 mg weekly for group A, and 100 mg for group B. Children below 10 years of age received half the adult dose. Following the initial phase of low dosage treatment, 5 mg DEC/kg was distributed by one of us to all villagers for 6 consecutive days. The results of treatment were evaluated approximately one year later. There was no difference betwe

BACKGROUND: Preparation of nanoformulations using natural products as bioactive substances is considered very promising for innovative larvi … quinquefasciatus, the main vector of the tropical neglected disease called lymphatic filariasis or elephantiasis. Thus, we aimed to investigate influence of different pairs of surfactants in nanoemulsion formation and investigate if a sucupira oleoresin-based nanoemulsion has promising larvicidal activity against this C. quinquefasciatus. We also evaluated mor …

Podoconiosis is a preventable Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) that results in significant lower limb swelling and chronic disability. Its management can be done at home by regularly washing feet with clean water and soap and using protective footwear. This study aimed to explore podoconiosis patients' experiences with access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and to identify barriers and facilitators of home-based management (HBM). In this qualitative phenomenological study, participants were recruited following a screening conducted in Butaro Sector (Rwanda) to identify individuals wit

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a significant neglected tropical disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Although progress has been made toward interrupting transmission through mass drug administration, LF-related morbidities-particularly hydrocele, lymphoedema, and recurrent acute dermatolymphangioadenitis-continue to cause substantial disability, comorbid infections, and reduced quality of life. National evidence on the burden of LF morbidities and factors associated with access to morbidity management remains limited.
METHODS: We conducted a national retrospective

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical and vector-borne diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, lymphatic filariasis, and kala-azar, pose substantial public health burdens in India. Despite WHO recommendations for enhanced disease surveillance and targeted communication strategies, little is known about public perceptions and discussions of these diseases across digital platforms. Understanding these perceptions can guide evidence-based policy making and public health messaging.
METHODS: We conducted an in silico analysis of publicly accessible social and news media data related to dengue, chikungun

INTRODUCTION: Lymphatic filariasis (LF), a neglected tropical disease (NTD), affects tropical regions marked by poor socioeconomic conditions and often results in non-curable filarial lymphedema. The impact of LF is often disproportionate, adversely affecting women due to a multitude of intersecting disadvantages. There has been little effort to understand the unique illness experience of women with LF.
METHODS: To explore the interplay between gender and the illness experience of women afflicted with filarial lymphoedema, this qualitative study mapped the experience of 18 women and the perce

OBJECTIVES: We conducted a confirmatory mapping survey to verify previous survey results, which suggested that lymphatic filariasis is endemic in some parts of Lagos State, Nigeria.
METHODS: Finger-prick blood samples were collected from 2787 children aged 7-16 years in six local government areas (LGAs) across 153 targeted schools. Circulating filarial antigen (CFA) levels were measured using the filaria test strip, and LGAs were classified as endemic if there were up to three positive cases (d = 3).
RESULTS: Children who tested positive for CFA were detected in all the six endemic LGAs, sur

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is a stigmatising neglected tropical condition, but the nature of podoconiosis stigma has not been fully explored. There is a growing understanding that the experience of stigma is intersectional, yet no research has been done on this matter in relation to podoconiosis. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of podoconiosis-related stigma by illustrating how multiple individuals' positionalities intersect to shape the experience of stigma due to podoconiosis.
METHODS: We used qualitative research to explore the experience of stigma among people af

BACKGROUND: The lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination program in all sixty-three endemic districts of Nepal was based on annual mass drug administration (MDA) using a combination of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and albendazole for at least 5 years. The MDA program was started in the Parsa district of the Terai region and at least six rounds of MDA were completed between 2003 and 2017 in all filariasis endemic districts of Central Nepal. Transmission Assessment Survey (TAS) report indicated that circulating filarial antigen (CFA) prevalence was below the critical value i.e., ≤ 2% in selected LF end

Genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics have significantly advanced our understanding of obligately host-associated microbes, where interrogation of the biology is often limited by the complexity of the biological system and limited tools. This includes the causative agents of many neglected tropical diseases, including filarial nematodes. Therefore, numerous transcriptomics studies have been undertaken on filarial nematodes. Most of these transcriptomics studies focus on Brugia malayi, which causes lymphatic filariasis and is a laboratory model for human filarial disease. Here, we undertook

BACKGROUND: Surgery for hydrocele is commonly promoted as part of morbidity management and disability prevention (MMDP) services for lymphatic filariasis (LF). However, uptake of these surgeries has been suboptimal owing to several community level barriers that have triggered mistrust in such services. This study aimed at documenting mechanisms of unlocking trust in community health systems (CHSs) in the context of a LF hydrocele management project that was implemented in Luangwa District, Zambia.
METHODS: Qualitative data was collected through in-depth interviews (IDIs) and focus group discu

BACKGROUND: Globally, there is recognition of the value of using mobile phones among health providers in improving health systems performance. However, in many Low- and Middle-income countries where there is shortage of health providers, Community Health Workers have assumed some responsibilities especially relating to identifying and reporting on health problems within their communities. Despite the known benefits of using mobile phone technology to deliver health services, there is limited information on the extent to which Community Health Workers are able to effectively use the technology
