Thermal Performance Enhancement of a Biomimetic Fish-Fin Latent Heat Storage Unit Using CNTs-COOH/Erythritol Composite Phase Change Material.

Phase change energy storage is a key technology for mitigating the volatility and intermittency of renewable energy and plays an important role in improving the efficiency, stability, and reliability of energy systems. To enhance the thermal conductivity of erythritol (Ery), this study introduces carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-COOH) as a high-thermal-conductivity filler into the Ery matrix to prepare a composite phase change material (CPCM). Inspired by biomimetic principles, a biomimetic fish-fin latent heat storage structure was designed. A series of characterizations were conducted on

High-Performance Nondoped Blue OLEDs Enabled by HLCT-State Emitters with High Excited Band-Tail Density: An Exciton Energy Distribution Perspective.

Excitons in organic semiconductors exhibit an energy distribution due to molecular thermal motion and disordered molecular packing. In our previous work, we modeled the exciton energy distribution using a simple Gaussian function centered at the optical bandgap. By comparing the overlap area (Aex) between the model and the solution absorption spectra of the emitters, we demonstrated that emitters with a high density of band-tail states are conducive to achieving high device efficiency. Herein, we develop two new blue emitters, TCPN and NCPN, featuring hybridized local and charge transfer (HLCT

Intrinsic Curvature-Induced Regulation of Interfacial Thermal Transport in Janus TMD Heterostructures.

Efficient interfacial thermal transport in two-dimensional heterostructures is essential for improving heat dissipation and operational stability in next-generation energy conversion and energy electronic devices. Here, nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are employed to investigate the thermal transport behaviors of WSSe/MoS2 and WSSe/MoSe2 lateral heterostructures. Unlike the commonly assumed flat interface, both heterostructures spontaneously form an intrinsically curved interface after relaxation, introducing a unique structural feature for phonon transport. The armchair interfac

Exploring the catalytic potential of transition metal decorated Al12N12 nanocages as a single atom catalyst for efficient hydrogen adsorption and dissociation reaction.

Hydrogen is a key alternative to fossil fuels and plays a crucial role in industrial hydrogenation. This study employs first-principles density functional theory (DFT) simulations to investigate transition-metal-decorated Al12N12 single-atom catalysts (SACs) for H2 adsorption and dissociation. Interaction energy calculations indicate excellent thermodynamic stability of the catalysts, with Ti@Al12N12 exhibiting the strongest interaction energy of -2.56 eV. Natural bond orbital (NBO) and frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analyses reveal significant electron transfer from TM atoms to Al12N12, and

Mitigating calcium inhibition in anaerobic digestion of organic sludge through injection of carbonate-forming additives.

Organic sludge (OS) contains high concentration of calcium, which can inhibit anaerobic digestion (AD) by limiting mass transfer between microbes and organics. In this study, we investigated the effects of carbonate-forming additives injection on methane production in AD of OS by mitigating calcium inhibition and clarified the underlying mechanisms. CO2, urea, and sodium bicarbonate were evaluated with focus on floc structure of OS and calcium dynamic, and energy analysis considered biogas-derived CO2 recycling. CO2 injection achieved highest methane production (113.9 mL-CH4/g-VS) and net ener

Strengthening carbon concentrating mechanisms of ambient CO2 with OLA@KAUST-7 nanoparticles for producing microalgal biomass.

In response to the mass transfer limitation of low concentration CO2 (approximately 400 ppm) in closed tubular photobioreactors aimed at improving indoor air quality, nanomaterials with excellent hydrolytic stability, OLA@KAUST-7, served as CO2 carriers. This approach sought to enhance carbon sequestration efficiency and biomass accumulation in Chlorella. The experiment examined the effects of varying addition amounts (0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 mmol/L) on the growth and physiological metabolism of Chlorella. The results indicated that 0.01 mmol/L represented the optimal dosage; at this concentration

Impedance shaping based stabilization control method for DC Micro-grid Feed-forward compensation.

The ports of the bi-directional converter exhibit negative impedance characteristics when the energy storage unit of a DC microgrid is operating in charging mode. This can decrease the system's stability margin, potentially leading to oscillation instability. To address this issue, we propose a feed-forward compensation control method based on impedance shaping. This involves designing a transfer function within the current feed-forward loop of the energy storage converter to ensure that the current reference value follows changes in the bus voltage. Selecting an appropriate time constant ensu

Tracking ultrafast non-adiabatic dissociation dynamics of the deuterated water dication molecule.

We applied reaction microscopy to elucidate fast non-adiabatic dissociation dynamics of deuterated water molecules after direct photo-double ionization at 61 eV with synchrotron radiation. For the very rare D+ + O+ + D breakup channel, the particle momenta, angular, and energy distributions of electrons and ions, measured in coincidence, reveal distinct electronic dication states and their dissociation pathways via spin-orbit coupling and charge transfer at crossings and seams on the potential energy surfaces. Notably, we could distinguish between direct and fast sequential dissociation scenar

Boron neutron capture therapy for urological cancers.

Boron neutron capture therapy is based on a nuclear reaction between the nonradioactive isotope boron-10 and either low-energy thermal neutrons or high-energy epithermal neutrons, which generate high linear energy transfer α particles and a recoiled lithium nucleus (7 Li) that selectively destroys the DNA helix in tumor cells. Boron neutron capture therapy is an emerging procedure aimed at improving the therapeutic ratio for the traditional treatment of various malignancies, which has been studied clinically in a variety of diseases, including glioblastoma, head and neck cancer, cutaneous mela…

Creatine kinase in human erythrocytes: A genetic anomaly reveals presence of soluble brain-type isoform.

For maintaining energy homeostasis, creatine kinase (CK) is present at elevated levels in tissues with high and/or fluctuating energy requirements such as muscle, brain, and epithelia, while there is very few CK, if any, in peripheral blood cells. However, an ectopic expression of brain-type creatine kinase (BCK) has been reported for platelets and leukocytes in an autosomal dominant inherited anomaly named CKBE. Here we investigated CK in erythrocytes of CKBE individuals from eight unrelated families. The data revealed a varying but significant increase of CK activity in CKBE individuals as c

A virus-MIPs fluorescent sensor based on FRET for highly sensitive detection of JEV.

Major stumbling blocks in the recognition and detection of virus are the unstable biological recognition element or the complex detection means. Here a fluorescent sensor based on virus-molecular imprinted polymers (virus-MIPs) was designed for specific recognition and highly sensitive detection of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). The virus-MIPs were anchored on the surface of silica microspheres modified by fluorescent dye, pyrene-1-carboxaldehyde (PC). The fluorescence intensity of PC can be enhanced by the principle of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), where virus acted as en…

Fragmentation of singly charged adenine induced by neutral fluorine beam impact at 3 keV.

The fragmentation scheme of singly charged adenine molecule (H(5)C(5)N(5)(+)) has been studied via neutral fluorine impact at 3 keV. By analyzing in correlation the kinetic energy loss of the scattered projectile F(-) produced in single charge transfer process and the mass of the charged fragments, the excitation energy distribution of the parent adenine molecular ions has been determined for each of the main dissociation channels. Several fragmentation pathways unrevealed in standard mass spectra or in appearance energy measurements are investigated. Regarding the well-known hydrogen cyanide

Microwave-Activatable Heterointerfaces With B/N-Regulated Carbon Nitride Bridge for Coupling Microwave Absorption, Catalytic Decomposition, and Programmable Energy Release.

Microwave-programmable energetic materials (EMs) offer opportunities for remotely controllable ignition and energy-release systems, yet inefficient microwave-activatable interfaces limit the electromagnetic energy conversion in EMs. Herein, we report an atomic-network strategy to transform microwave-insensitive cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX) into a microwave-responsive supramolecular aerogel. Boron- and nitrogen-regulated carbon nitride (BCN) was designed as a multifunctional "interfacial bridge" to assemble HMX with metastable intermolecular composite (MIC) sensitizers, constructing

Retinal metabolism displays evidence for uncoupling of glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation via Cori-, Cahill-, and mini-Krebs-cycle.

The retina consumes massive amounts of energy, yet its metabolism and substrate exploitation remain poorly understood. Here, we used a murine explant model to manipulate retinal energy metabolism under entirely controlled conditions and utilised 1H-NMR spectroscopy-based metabolomics, in situ enzyme detection, and cell viability readouts to uncover the pathways of retinal energy production. Our experimental manipulations resulted in varying degrees of photoreceptor degeneration, while the inner retina and retinal pigment epithelium were essentially unaffected. This selective vulnerability of p
