Mucoid impaction and plastic bronchitis are relatively rare disorders caused by the formation of obstructive airway plugs. We observed from February 1999 to June 2000 seven patients with mucoid impaction and one with plastic bronchitis. In the group of mucoid impaction there were 4 patients with bronchial asthma and 3 without history of lung disease. At the admission to hospital all patients suffered from cough, chest pain and effort dyspnea. Two of them expectorated during cough "bronchial casts". The levels of ICAM-1, ELAM-1, TNF-alpha and IL-6 were determined in 12 patients with pemphigus vulgaris (PV) both in serum and the blister liquid. The permeability of the blood-brain barrier was studied in 48 patients by examining the protein indices of cerebrospinal fluid. The types of changes in the indices were identified, which reflected the level of the permeability and correlate with good and poor postoperative outcomes. Pericardial involvement in polymyositis and dermatomyositis (PM/DM) is rare, usually asymptomatic and exceptionally part of the initial presentation. We describe a 37-year-old patient hospitalized for overt acute pericarditis, revealing dermatomyositis, which to our knowledge has not been previously reported. Pericardial puncture relieved the patient. The pericardial fluid was citrine yellow, exsudative, and mainly contained lymphocytes. Search for LE cells and anti-DNA antibodies was negative, whereas the antinuclear antibodies and the rheumatoid factor were present in the pericardial fluid.

Blind loop syndrome is the most common syndrome of bacterial overgrowth following gastrectomy. We report two cases with diarrhea, steatorrhea, exudative enteropathy and major nutritional deficiency. Diagnosis was based on the breath test and aspirate analysis. Surgery with restoration of the duodenal continuity was the treatment. Patients with contraindications for surgery should be given prolonged antibiotic therapy which should be repeated if symptoms reoccur.

L-PIA, a standard A1-selective adenosine agonist, was evaluated orally in carrageenan (CRG)- and reverse passive arthus-pleurisy. White blood cell (WBC) and exudate accumulation were assessed four hours after induction of the inflammatory response. Diagnostic cytology in avian medicine provides a means for better disease definition in the avian patient, which allows for a more specific therapeutic regimen. It is important that cytologic specimens are from fresh sources, since cells degenerate rapidly following the death of the bird or the tissue. Cytologic evaluation is an adjunct to other diagnostic procedures. A definitive diagnosis often requires information from the clinical history, physical examination, evaluation of samples obtained from the bird, radiographs, surgical procedures, necropsy, and histopathology.
