Awareness of feeding, growth and development among mothers of infants with cleft lip and/or palate.

BACKGROUND: Awareness of feeding among mothers plays an important role in the growth and development of children with cleft lip and palate. Mothers' increased awareness provides the right care and nutrition to these children in order to grow and achieve their developmental milestones. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at (1) assessing mothers' awareness on breastfeeding and formula-milk feeding, weaning, growth, and development of infants with cleft lip and palate and (2) the relationship of mothers' awareness with their level of education and monthly household income. METHODS: This cross-section

Forced to Live: Controlled Forced Feeding of Political Prisoners and the Challenge to Nation-States' Civilising Processes.

Since the nineteenth century, struggles between state power and political prisoners' right to die have aroused considerable interest. State enforcement to 'make live' through force-feeding also raises important questions concerning processes that inform government approaches, often through methods considered to be brutal, and how these actions fit within perceptions of civilised behaviour. The social scientific focus of hunger strikes tends to be informed by Foucauldian bio-power and governmentality which we draw upon when applying insights from figurational sociology. These insights allow us

Extreme achalasia presenting as anorexia nervosa.

Background. Achalasia may lead to cachexia if not diagnosed in an early stage. Surgery in cachectic patients is hazardous and complications may result in a protracted recovery or even death. Different treatment options have been described. In this paper, we report a stepwise surgical laparoscopic approach which appears to be safe and effective. Methods. Over a one-year period, a patient with a body mass index (BMI) below 17 being treated for anorexia nervosa was referred with dysphagia. Because of the extreme cachexia, a laparoscopic feeding jejunostomy (LFJ) was fashioned to enable long-term

Swallowing dysfunction in very low birth weight infants with oral feeding desaturation.

BACKGROUND: We detected swallowing dysfunction by the modified barium swallow (MBS) test and determined risk factors for swallowing dysfunction in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants with oral feeding desaturation near discharge. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 41 VLBW infants referred for MBS test because of significant oral feeding desaturation at ≥ 35 weeks of postmenstrual age. Infants who showed impaired airway protection, including inadequate epiglottic closure, laryngeal penetration and/or tracheal aspiration by MBS test, were compared to those without impaired airway protection.

Management of esophagorespiratory fistula due to carcinoma esophagus with palliative intubation, gastric decompression and transgastric feeding jejunostomy.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma esophagus with esophagorespiratory fistula has a poor prognosis. Water and food intake suffers and pulmonary contamination leads to lung infection. Treatment is essentially palliative. METHODS: Thirty-five patients with esophagorespiratory fistula secondary to esophageal carcinoma were treated with palliative esophageal intubation, gastrostomy and transgastric feeding jejunostomy. RESULTS: Esophageal prosthesis could be implanted in 34 patients. One patient died in the postoperative period. Twenty-nine patients were able to swallow saliva without leakage into the lungs.

A survey of current practice for post-acute stroke patients with cognitive impairment requiring nasogastric feeding-A proposed management pathway.

BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is a common complication of stroke, and enteral feeding is often necessary. If present, cognitive impairment can complicate the process of reintroducing oral intake. There is limited evidence concerning the outcomes of enteral feeding with this particular patient group and decision-making can be challenging when considering long-term feeding options. AIMS: To consolidate best practice and begin working towards developing a pathway for patients with cognitive impairment and dysphagia. METHODS & PROCEDURES: A survey was conducted among post-acute stroke units in Wales to

Impact of early post-pyloric feeding during therapeutic hypothermia on outcomes in patients with traumatic brain injury: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Although therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is a standard critical care intervention for traumatic brain injury (TBI), it can significantly suppress gastrointestinal motility, leading to feeding intolerance (FI) rates as high as 40%-70%. Post-pyloric feeding (PPF), which bypasses the stomach, offers a potential solution. Nevertheless, the efficacy of PPF in improving outcomes for TBI patients receiving TH has not been established. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the effects of early post-pyloric feeding versus conventional nasogastric tube feeding on neurological outcomes and cli

Efficacy of MiraNet Combi, a novel alpha-cypermethrin, pyriproxyfen, and piperonyl butoxide long-lasting insecticidal net against pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles funestus in western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: The widespread use of pyrethroid-only long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) has contributed substantially to malaria control; however, increasing pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors threatens their continued effectiveness. To address this challenge, LLINs incorporating additional active ingredients have been developed. MiraNet® Combi is a novel LLIN incorporating alpha-cypermethrin, the insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen (PPF), and the synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO). METHODS: We evaluated the efficacy of MiraNet® Combi against pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles funestus in

Host gill attachment causes blood-feeding by the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) chalimus larvae and alters parasite development and transcriptome.

BACKGROUND: Blood-feeding is a common strategy among parasitizing arthropods, including the ectoparasitic salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis), feeding off its salmon host's skin and blood. Blood is rich in nutrients, among these iron and heme. These are essential molecules for the louse, yet their oxidative properties render them toxic to cells if not handled appropriately. Blood-feeding might therefore alter parasite gene expression. METHODS: We infected Atlantic salmon with salmon louse copepodids and sampled the lice in two different experiments at day 10 and 18 post-infestation. Parasi
