Photochemical Chain Scissions Enhance Polyethylene Glycol Biodegradability: from Probabilistic Modeling to Experimental Demonstration.

Polyethylene glycols (PEGs), a major class of water-soluble polymers (WSPs), are widely used in diverse applications, from which PEGs may be released into the environment. This work investigates the effect of PEG reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals (•OH), an important environmental oxidant, on the molecular weight (MW) distribution of PEGs and their subsequent biodegradation in soil and sediment. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrated a pronounced decrease in the PEG MW after only a few •OH-reaction-induced chain scissions on initial PEG molecules. The simulation results wer

The geologic history of marine dissolved organic carbon from iron oxides.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is the largest reduced carbon reservoir in modern oceans1,2. Its dynamics regulate marine communities and atmospheric CO2 levels3,4, whereas 13C compositions track ecosystem structure and autotrophic metabolism5. However, the geologic history of marine DOC remains largely unconstrained6,7, limiting our ability to mechanistically reconstruct coupled ecological and biogeochemical evolution. Here we develop and validate a direct proxy for past DOC signatures using co-precipitated organic carbon in iron ooids. We apply this to 26 marine iron ooid-containing formation

Determination of 14 Benzodiazepine Multiresidues in Aquaculture Environment by Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry.

In this study, an analytical method for the simultaneous determination of 14 benzodiazepine (BDZ) multiresidues in aquaculture environmental water and sediment was developed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The method uses an internal standard for quantification and achieves chromatographic separation and analysis within 11 min. The results of method validation showed that the recoveries of most analytes were in the range of 70-120% in water or sediment matrices, and the correlation coefficients of the 14 target chemistries were R2 > 0.

Factors and mechanisms driving among-lake variability of mercury concentrations in a benthivorous fish in the canadian subarctic.

Wild-caught fish are an important subsistence food source in remote northern regions, but they can also be a source of exposure to mercury (Hg), which has known health hazards. We investigated factors and mechanisms that control variability of Hg concentrations in Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) among remote subarctic lakes in Northwest Territories, Canada. Integrating variables that reflect fish ecology, in-lake conditions, and catchment attributes, we aimed to not only determine factors that best explain among-lake variability of fish Hg, but also to provide a whole-ecosystem underst

Occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes influenced by tides around a sewage outlet in the Yangtze Estuary, China.

The extensive use of antibiotics in anthropogenic activities enables their continuous discharge into estuarine ecosystems and thus causes the subsequent proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which is also influenced by hydrodynamic conditions of the estuaries, especially tides. This study investigates the occurrences and variations of antibiotics and ARGs in the surface water and sediment around a sewage outlet in the Yangtze Estuary during a tidal cycle. A total of ten antibiotics and seven ARGs were detected. The absolute abundances of ARGs varied from 101 to 105 copies/mL in

Mercury transfer and transformation from mine soil to river sediments: the potential role of amorphous iron oxides in methylation processes in southern Burkina Faso.

Since the early 2000s, artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) has rapidly expanded in Burkina Faso. Mercury (Hg) is widely used to extract gold and its release through burning amalgams has led to soil contamination near mining sites. However, the fate and speciation of Hg in soils remains poorly understood, especially the reactivity or methylation potential of soil particles eroded into rivers. In this study, Hg contamination levels and speciation were assessed in water, soil, and sediments from five ASGM districts along the Mouhoun River. Surface waters near riverside mining sites showe

Influence of hydroperiod and canopy cover on mercury accumulation and methylation in Carolina bay wetland sediments in the Southeastern United States.

Isolated wetlands are crucial to the global mercury (Hg) cycle due to their widespread distribution and variable hydrology. To quantify atmospheric Hg deposition, sediment accumulation, and Hg methylation, we collected surface sediments from 10 Carolina bay wetlands-including short- and long-hydroperiod bays during wet and dry seasons for total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) analysis. THg and MeHg concentrations ranged from 23.2 to 224.8 ng/g and 0.4-5.5 ng/g, respectively, and %MeHg ranged from 0.4 to 3.1 %. Short-hydroperiod bays had higher THg concentrations (116.4 ± 46.5 ng/g) than long

First determination of 1,4-dioxane and chlorinated solvents in sediment of Masan Bay in Korea.

1,4-Dioxane, a widely used industrial solvent and former stabilizer for chlorinated solvents, has emerged as a contaminant of global concern due to its persistence and toxicity. Although co-occurring with chlorinated solvents in groundwater and wastewater effluents, their presence in sediments has not been reported, due to absence of analytical method. This study developed a static headspace gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HS-GC/MS) method for the simultaneous analysis of 1,4-dioxane and three chlorinated solvents, including 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA), 1,1-dichloroethene (1,1-DCE), and

Comparison of the Antibiotic Resistance of Escherichia coli Populations from Water and Biofilm in River Environments.

Antibiotic-resistant, facultative pathogenic bacteria are commonly found in surface water; however, the factors influencing the spread and stabilization of antibiotic resistance in this habitat, particularly the role of biofilms, are not fully understood. The extent to which bacterial populations in biofilms or sediments exacerbate the problem for specific antibiotic classes or more broadly remains unanswered. In this study, we investigated the differences between the bacterial populations found in the surface water and sediment/biofilm of the Mur River and the Drava River in Austria. Samples

Toxicity of PAHs-enriched sediments on meiobenthic communities under ocean warming and CO2-driven acidification scenarios.

This study aimed to assess the interactive effects of CO2-driven acidification, temperature rise, and PAHs toxicity on meiobenthic communities. Laboratory microcosms were established in a full factorial experimental design, manipulating temperature (25 °C and 27 °C), pH (8.1 and 7.6), and PAH contamination (acenaphthene + benzo(a)pyrene spiked sediments and negative control). Temperature rise and CO2-driven acidification led to a decrease in the densities of Copepoda. The density of nematodes Pseudochromadora and Daptonema also decreased, while Sphaerotheristus and Sabatieria densities increas

Distribution and Homogenization of Multiple Mercury Species Inputs to Freshwater Wetland Mesocosms.

Mercury (Hg)-impaired aquatic ecosystems often receive multiple inputs of different Hg species with varying potentials for transformation and bioaccumulation. Over time, these distinct input pools of Hg homogenize in their relative distributions and bioaccumulation potentials as a result of biogeochemical processes and other aging processes within the ecosystem. This study sought to evaluate the relative time scale for homogenization of multiple Hg inputs to wetlands, information that is relevant for ecosystem management strategies that consider Hg source apportionment. We performed experiment

Accumulation of metal(loid)s in the digestive gland of the mussel Unio crassus Philipsson, 1788: A reliable detection of historical freshwater contamination.

The possible influence of historical contamination of water/sediments on the metal(loid) bioaccumulation in the digestive gland of mussel Unio crassus Philipsson, 1788, from two differently contaminated sites at the Mrežnica River was studied in three seasons. The first data for this species on total/cytosolic concentrations of 27 (non)essential elements were obtained by HR ICP-MS. Higher bioaccumulation was observed at the historically contaminated site, with several nonessential elements (Bi, Cs, Pb, Sb, Tl, U) found in 5-6 times higher concentrations compared to the reference site. Although

An intrusion and environmental effects of man-made silver nanoparticles in cold seeps.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are among the most widely used metal-based engineered nanomaterials in biomedicine and nanotechnology, and account for >50 % of global nanomaterial consumer products. The increasing use of AgNPs potentially causes marine ecosystem changes; however, the environmental impacts of man-made AgNPs are still poorly studied. This study reports for the first time that man-made AgNPs intruded into cold seeps, which are important marine ecosystems where hydrogen sulfide, methane, and other hydrocarbon-rich fluid seepage occur. Using a combination of electron microscopy, geoch

Cyanobacterial blooms increase the release of vanadium through iron reduction and dissolved organic matter complexation in the sediment of eutrophic lakes.

Vanadium (V), a hazardous environmental contaminant, can be highly toxic to aquatic or even human life. Nonetheless, knowledge of its redox geochemistry and mobility in sediments, especially those of eutrophic lakes, remains limited. In this study, we combined in situ high-resolution sampling and laboratory simulation experiments for monitoring soluble and labile V to reveal the mobilization mechanism of V in the sediment of Lake Taihu. The results showed that the concentration of soluble V (1.18-5.22 µg L-1) exceeded the long-term ecotoxicology limitation proposed by the government of the Net

Effects of fiddler crab bioturbation on the geochemical migration and bioavailability of heavy metals in coastal wetlands.

Fiddler crabs, found in coastal wetlands worldwide, function as ecosystem engineers. Their burrowing activity can significantly alter biogeochemistry at the local scale, however, the mobility of heavy metals (HMs) in burrow sediments remains unclear. Here, we used diffusive gradients in thin-film probes to obtain bioavailable Fe and HMs (Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, Pb, Co, and Mo) in crab burrows from coastal wetlands (mudflats, salt marshes, and mangroves). The depth-profile results showed that most HMs were enriched at shallow and deep depths but deficient at middle depths. We highlighted that bioturbati

Determining heavy metal pollution in sediments from the largest impounded lake in the eastern route of China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project: Ecological risks, sources, and implications for lake management.

The eastern route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (ER-SNWDP) is a major human health project designed to alleviate the water scarcity in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in China. Impounded lake water security is directly related to the water diversion project effectiveness. At present, there is not a thorough understanding of the sediment heavy metals in Lake Hongze, the largest impounded lake of the ER-SNWDP. Consequently, this study reports a distribution analysis of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, As, Hg, and Ni in 101 sediment samples from Lake Hongze; we, utilized the enrichment factor

Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) potentially facilitates the accumulation of phosphorus in lake water from sediment.

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are crucial nutrients for eutrophication in the lacustrine ecosystem and attract the attention worldwide. However, the interaction between them need further clarification. This study aimed to assess the influence of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) on the cycle of P in lacustrine sediment. Different fractions of N and P in the pore water were measured using high-resolution in-situ measurement techniques, HR-Peeper and DGT, coupling with sequential extraction for solid sediment from a shallow freshwater lake. The results showed that elevated nitr

Mercury methylation and methylmercury demethylation in boreal lake sediment with legacy sulphate pollution.

Sulphate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in freshwater systems may regulate the formation of methylmercury (MeHg), a potent neurotoxin that biomagnifies in aquatic ecosystems. While many boreal lakes continue to recover from decades of elevated atmospheric sulphate deposition, little research has examined whether historically high sulphate concentrations can result in persistently elevated MeHg production and accumulation in aquatic systems. This study used sediment from a historically sulphate-impacted lake and an adjacent reference lake in northwestern Ontario, Canada to investigate the l
