HIV seroprevalence among participants at a Supervised Injection Facility in Vancouver, Canada: implications for prevention, care and treatment.

North America's first government sanctioned medically supervised injection facility (SIF) was opened during September 2003 in Vancouver, Canada. This was in response to a large open public drug scene, high rates of HIV and hepatitis C transmission, fatal drug overdoses, and poor health outcomes among the city's injection drug users. Between December 2003 and April 2005, a representative sample of 1,035 SIF participants were enrolled in a prospective cohort that required completing an interviewer-administered questionnaire and providing a blood sample for HIV testing. HIV infection was detected

Women and HIV infection: a cohort study of 483 HIV-infected women in Bordeaux, France, 1985-1991. The Groupe d'Epidémiologie Clinique du SIDA en Aquitaine.

OBJECTIVES: To study the epidemiological trends, clinical patterns, evolution and prognosis of HIV infection in women. DESIGN: Cohort study of 1816 HIV-infected patients. RESULTS: Up to 1 January 1991, 483 (26.6%) of the patients reported to the Groupe d'Epidemiologie Clinique du SIDA en Aquitaine surveillance system were women. The male-to-female ratio has decreased progressively (3.4:1 in 1985; 2.7:1 in 1990) over time. Fifty per cent of HIV-infected women are or have been intravenous drug users (IVDU). The proportion of heterosexually acquired HIV infection increased from 11.6 to 34.6% ov

HIV Serostatus Disclosure and Its Predictors Among Children Living With HIV in Ethiopia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: HIV disclosure among children refers to when the caregiver is having disclosed to the child that he or she has HIV specifically. Disclosure significantly improved adherence to treatment and quality of life among children living with HIV/AIDS. Even though, the benefits of disclosure are considerable, informing a child of his or her own HIV status is often delayed. There is a dearth of studies on HIV serostatus disclosure among children in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the pooled prevalence of HIV serostatus disclosure and associated factors among children living wi

Prevalence and Correlates of HIV Testing among Young People Enrolled in Non-Formal Education Centers in Urban Chiang Mai, Thailand: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: HIV testing is the gateway to HIV prevention, treatment, and care. Despite the established vulnerability of young Thai people to HIV infection, studies examining the prevalence and correlates of HIV testing among the general population of Thai youth are still very limited. This study investigates socio-demographic, behavioral, and psychosocial factors associated with HIV testing among young Thai people enrolled in Non-formal Education Centers (NFEC) in urban Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional quantitative study conducted among young unmarried Thai y

Serum chemokine profiles in visceral leishmaniasis, HIV and HIV/ visceral leishmaniasis co-infected Ethiopian patients.

BACKGROUND: The search for a correlation between chemokine levels in plasma or serum and protection from HIV infection or progression to AIDS has been attempted by a number of workers. Chemokines are also suggested to play a role in immunity to Leishmania and Leishmania co-infection with HIV. OBJECTIVE: To assess plasma level of alpha chemokine (CXCL12, formerly known as SDF-1alpha) and beta chemokines (CCL3, CCL4 and CCL5, formerly known as MIP-1alpha, MIP-1beta and RANTES, respectively) in HIV Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) and HIV/VL coinfection. The HIV-2 genotype and the HIV-1 syncytium-inducing phenotype are associated with a lower virus replication in dendritic cells.

During sexual transmission, HIV infects the mucosal dendritic cells and is transferred to CD4 T cells. Whether HIV variants of a particular genetic (sub)type or phenotype selectively infect dendritic cells (DC) or are preferentially transferred to T cells remains highly controversial. To avoid the cumbersome use of primary dendritic cells, in vitro dendritic cell models were generated from precursors, either hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) or monocytes (MO). Productive infection in the dendritic cells and transfer of the virus to T cells was assessed for a range of HIV variants. HPC-deriv

Culturally Responsive Sexual and Reproductive Health Education to Address HIV Risk Among African-Born Immigrant Women.

ObjectiveAfrican-born immigrants (ABIs) represent a growing demographic in the United States, constituting nearly half of the foreign-born Black population. They face distinct health challenges, with ABI women experiencing disproportionately high rates of HIV incidence. A critical factor contributing to this health disparity is limited sexual and reproductive health (SRH) literacy. The primary objective of the study was to pilot and evaluate an intervention that employed a culturally responsive, community-led approach to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education for HIV prevention among A

Immune activation and exhaustion marker expression on T-cell subsets in ART-treated adolescents and young adults with perinatal HIV-1 infection as correlates of viral persistence.

HIV-1 infection in memory CD4+ T cells forms a latent reservoir that is a barrier to cure. Identification of immune biomarkers that correlate with HIV-1 reservoir size may aid with evaluating efficacy of HIV-1 eradication strategies, towards ART-free remission and cure. In adults living with non-perinatal HIV-1, the immune exhaustion marker PD-1 on central memory CD4+ T cells (Tcm) correlates with measures of HIV-1 reservoir size. Immune correlates of HIV-1 are less defined in adolescents and young adults with perinatal HIV-1. With multi-parameter flow cytometry, we examined immune activation

Home-Based Intervention to Test and Start (HITS): a community-randomized controlled trial to increase HIV testing uptake among men in rural South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: The uptake of HIV testing and linkage to care remains low among men, contributing to high HIV incidence in women in South Africa. We conducted the "Home-Based Intervention to Test and Start" (HITS) in a 2x2 factorial cluster randomized controlled trial in one of the World's largest ongoing HIV cohorts in rural South Africa aimed at enhancing both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for HIV testing. METHODS: Between February and December 2018, in the uMkhanyakude district of KwaZulu-Natal, we randomly assigned 45 communities (clusters) (n = 13,838 residents) to one of the four ar

Paradoxical exacerbation of psoriasis in AIDS: proposed explanations including the potential roles of substance P and gram-negative bacteria.

Psoriasis, a TH1-induced disorder, is not more common in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection than in the general population. However, it may appear for the first time or pre-existing psoriasis may worsen and be difficult to treat in HIV disease. The paradoxical exacerbation of psoriasis in AIDS has not been fully explained. Various explanations have been proposed including (a) the reduction of Langerhans' cells (LCs) in HIV disease, (b) the direct epidermal proliferative effect of HIV, (c) the altered cytokine profile in HIV disease, (d) HIV-induced macrophage nitric oxide (NO) produc

Distinguishing and overlapping laboratory results of thrombotic microangiopathies in HIV infection: Can scoring systems assist?

BACKGROUND: Patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection are at risk of thrombotic microangiopathies (TMAs) notably thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Overlap between laboratory results exists resulting in diagnostic ambiguity. METHODS: Routine laboratory results of 71 patients with HIV-associated TTP (HIV-TTP) and 81 with DIC with concomitant HIV infection (HIV-DIC) admitted between 2015 and 2021 to academic hospitals in Johannesburg, South Africa were retrospectively reviewed. A Quality Improvement Intervention to Inform Scale-Up of Integrated HIV-TB Services: Lessons Learned From KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: In South Africa, mortality rates among HIV-TB coinfected patients are among the highest in the world. The key to reducing mortality is integrating HIV-TB services, however, a generalizable implementation method and package of tested change ideas to guide the scale-up of integrated HIV-TB services are unavailable. We describe the implementation of a quality improvement (QI) intervention, health systems' weaknesses, change ideas, and lessons learned in improving integrated HIV-TB services. METHODS: Between December 1, 2016, and December 31, 2018, 8 nurse supervisors overseeing 20

Pattern of linkage and retention in HIV care continuum among patients attending referral HIV care clinic in private sector in India.

Continued engagement throughout the HIV care continuum, from HIV diagnosis through retention on antiretroviral therapy (ART), is crucial for enhancing impact of HIV care programs. We assessed linkage and retention in HIV care among people living with HIV (PLHIV) enrolled at a private HIV care clinic in Pune, India. Of 1220 patients, 28% delayed linkage after HIV diagnosis with a median delay of 24 months (IQR = 8-43). Younger people, women, low socioeconomic status, and those diagnosed at facilities other than the study clinic were more likely to delay linkage. Those with advanced HIV disease

Distinct characteristics of endometrial and decidual macrophages and regulation of their permissivity to HIV-1 infection by SAMHD1.

UNLABELLED: In order to develop strategies to prevent HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus type 1) transmission, it is crucial to better characterize HIV-1 target cells in the female reproductive tract (FRT) mucosae and to identify effective innate responses. Control of HIV-1 infection in the decidua (the uterine mucosa during pregnancy) can serve as a model to study natural mucosal protection. Macrophages are the main HIV-1 target cells in the decidua. Here we report that in vitro, macrophages and T cells are the main HIV-1 targets in the endometrium in nonpregnant women. As reported for decid

Potential cost-effectiveness of schistosomiasis treatment for reducing HIV transmission in Africa--the case of Zimbabwean women.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological data from Zimbabwe suggests that genital infection with Schistosoma haematobium may increase the risk of HIV infection in young women. Therefore, the treatment of Schistosoma haematobium with praziquantel could be a potential strategy for reducing HIV infection. Here we assess the potential cost-effectiveness of praziquantel as a novel intervention strategy against HIV infection. METHODS: We developed a mathematical model of female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) and HIV infections in Zimbabwe that we fitted to cross-sectional data of FGS and HIV prevalence of 1999.

Cost-effectiveness of antenatal HIV-testing: reviewing its pharmaceutical and methodological aspects.

This paper reviews the pharmacoeconomic aspects of antenatal testing for HIV. HIV is a retrovirus which is transmitted among humans through sexual contact, infected blood or blood products (needle sharing or percutaneous accidents) and from mother to child (vertical transmission). Vertical transmission from the HIV-infected mother can occur in utero during and after delivery, through breastfeeding. Effective interventions available to reduce the risk of vertical transmission include: pharmacotherapy prior, during and after delivery; voluntary caesarean section; and replacing breastfeeding by b

Pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV: a review for dermatovenereologists.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection remains a significant public health issue, with 112,883 new diagnoses reported in Europe in 2023. The rise is particularly notable in Eastern Europe, where new cases increased by 20% between 2010 and 2023. Late diagnosis is a major barrier to HIV control, with nearly 50% of new infections in Europe - and up to 60% in Italy - detected at an advanced stage. Dermatovenereologists are key in early detection, as over 90% of people living with HIV show at least one HIV-related dermatologic condition before diagnosis. Thus, dermatovenereology services are

Artificial intelligence in HIV research: a structured review and task-oriented clinical framework.

BACKGROUND: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) poses a global health challenge despite the success of the Antiretroviral Treatment (ART), which allows the disease to be potentially controlled. The growing availability of heterogeneous data has impulsed the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address the different clinical domains of HIV, facilitating the creation of decision making tools to assist clinical professionals. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to propose a task-oriented framework to support clinicians and researchers that want to apply AI in the management of HIV, linking clinical task

T cell immunity predicts clinical outcomes on stopping antiretroviral treatment after HIV-specific broadly neutralising antibody therapy.

There is no readily accessible, scalable cure for HIV infection. Trials of HIV-specific broadly neutralising antibodies (bNAbs) demonstrate inhibition of viral replication and reduction of the reservoir of latently-infected cells, potentially offering new strategies for HIV eradication. Animal and human studies suggest bNAbs have multiple activities, including a direct antiviral action and a secondary induction of T cell responses, the 'vaccinal effect'. The RIO trial assessed HIV-specific cell-mediated immunity after dosing with two long-acting bNAbs (10-1074-LS and 3BNC117-LS) in people trea
