Decreased lymphocyte aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase and glutathione S-transferase activities in patients with hand dermatitis.

Aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) (EC 2.5.1.18) activity were measured in human lymphocytes of peripheral blood from 8 patients with irritant or allergic contact dermatitis of the hands, and compared with data from a control group. Both AHH and GST activity was found to be significantly depressed in the allergic and irritant contact dermatitis subjects, as compared with controls. It is suggested that AHH may be a quantitative marker of the inflammatory status.

[Trichosporon capitatum as pathogen of dermatomycoses].

Three cases of dermatomcycosis are reported, caused by Trichosporon capitatum, a yeast-like organism, belonging to genus Trichosporon of the Cryptococcaceae, which till now was isolated out of dermatological material only in a few cases. One of the lesions, characterized as "leuconychia mycotica", is a problematic task with regard to the treatment, for it is a professional infection in an offset-printer. A glycerol containing fluid for wiping his printing machine was detected as reservoir of yeastlike agents and continuously scattering infection cause. The pathogenic role of Trichosporon capit

Modified intralesional aciclovir treatment in the management of recalcitrant palmoplantar and ungual warts: a case series of 14 patients.

In this retrospective study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of modified intralesional aciclovir for the treatment of recalcitrant palmoplantar and ungual warts in 14 patients (7 men and 7 women) of mean age 24.5 years (SD 8.19). Modified aciclovir (50 mg mL-1) was prepared by mixing 250 mg of lyophilized aciclovir powder with 4 mL of distilled water and 1 mL of 2% lignocaine. Then, this solution was injected into each wart at a dose of 0.1 mL or until blanching occurred. Every 2 weeks, the eschar was pared off and the treatment was repeated until a complete cure was observed, for a maxim

What is the relevance of contact allergy to sodium metabisulfite and which concentration of the allergen should we use?

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of contact allergy to sodium metabisulfite (SMB) has increased from the range of 1.4% to 1.7% to the range of 3.4% to 6.8% in published series over the past 20 years. AIMS: The aims of this study were to review contact allergy to SMB in our cohort and to investigate different concentrations to define the most appropriate concentration for patch testing. METHODS: Patient records were reviewed between February 2009 and December 2011 to obtain information on patient demographics, clinical presentation, and prevalence of contact allergy to SMB. Patients attending for p

Non-dermatophyte mold onychomycosis in Sri Lanka.

Dermatophytic and non-dermatophytic onychomycosis (NDM) was indistinguishable clinically in our case series. Making a clinical diagnosis of onychomycosis without mycology is the routine practice in Sri Lanka. The prevalence of NDM (45.8%) was very high in our patient population, followed by yeasts (34.1%); dermatophyte infection made up only 20%. Therefore, the treatment of onychomycosis with griseofulvin seems futile. Close contact with soil, the habit of walking barefoot, frequent emersion of hands in water, and a hot, humid climate partly explain the variation in causative pathogens in this

Onychomycosis in patients with psoriasis--a multicentre study.

1-3% of human population is affected by psoriasis. Nail disorders are reported in 10-80% of patients with psoriasis. Nail deformations vary according to their degree of severity but are mainly represented by pitting, Beau's lines, hyperkeratosis, onycholysis, leuconychia or oil drops. Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails, caused by dermatophytes, yeast and moulds. In this study, 228 patients with psoriasis aged between 18 and 72 were examined (48 - from Plovdiv, Bulgaria; 145 - from Pleven, Bulgaria and 35 - from Thessaloniki, Greece); 145 of them were male and 83 of them were fema

Non-dermatophytic molds as agents of onychomycosis in Izmir, Turkey - a prospective study.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of causative non-dermatophytic filamentous fungi in onychomycosis. Totally 1,222 (1,222 x 3 = 3,666) samples of nail scrapings from 1,146 patients (from 76 patients two specimens: both from finger- and toe-nails) with prediagnosis of onychomycosis sent to the Mycology Laboratory from the Clinic of Dermatology, Ege University Hospital, Izmir, Turkey, July 2001-December 2003, were prospectively studied with conventional mycological procedures. The set criteria for the diagnosis of onychomycosis due to non-dermatophytic molds were: (1) Obs

Onychomycosis in Adana, Turkey: a 5-year study.

BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis results from invasion of the nail plate by dermatophytes, yeasts or mould species of fungi. This report documents the etiological agents of onychomycosis in Adana, Turkey. METHODS: Results of mycological tests of nail clippings or subungal scrapings collected in the period between 1998 and 2002 were analyzed. Both the direct microscopy and the cultures of the nail material were performed to identify the causative agent. RESULTS: Out of a total of 388 cases examined, finger (12.4%) and toenail (87.6%) involvement, 155 (39.9%), were mycologically proven cases of onych
