Risk taking and impulsive behaviour: fundamental discoveries, theoretical perspectives and clinical implications.

Our willingness to take risks, our ability to wait or the speed with which to make decisions are central features of our personality. However, it is now recognized that impulsive and risk-taking behaviours are not a unitary construct, and different aspects can be both psychologically and neurally dissociated. The range of neurochemicals and brain systems that govern these behaviours is extensive, and this may be a contributing factor to the phenotypic range seen in the human population. However, this variety can also be pathological as extremes in risk-taking and impulsive behaviours are chara

Personality Variables and Eating Pathology.

Personality variables have long been implicated in the onset and maintenance of eating disorders, as well as in symptom divergence between anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Clinical observations are broadly supported by the data, with restricting anorexia nervosa associated with higher levels of constraint and Persistence, and binge-purge behaviors linked to the tendency to take impulsive action when emotionally distressed. Considerable heterogeneity is found within diagnostic categories, however, suggesting that different personality structures may predispose individuals to develop disord

Temporal discounting predicts risk sensitivity in rhesus macaques.

Humans and animals tend both to avoid uncertainty and to prefer immediate over future rewards. The comorbidity of psychiatric disorders such as impulsivity, problem gambling, and addiction suggests that a common mechanism may underlie risk sensitivity and temporal discounting. Nonetheless, the precise relationship between these two traits remains largely unknown. To examine whether risk sensitivity and temporal discounting reflect a common process, we recorded choices made by two rhesus macaques in a visual gambling task while we varied the delay between trials. We found that preference for th

[Utilization behavior during the course of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy].

A particular semiologic feature of a case of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy was the existence of utilization behavior as described by Lhermitte. The affection developed in a patient with myeloid leukemia treated by cytotoxic drugs. Multifocal low density areas were shown by CT Scan examination. The course of the disease was not altered by isoprinozine therapy.

The good, the bad, and the ugly: a comprehensive study of temperament and personality traits as correlates of self-reported disruptive behavior problems in male and female adolescents.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to provide a comprehensive picture of temperament and personality traits as correlates of self-reported disruptive behavior problems in male and female adolescents. METHODS: Two-hundred-and-sixty-three non-clinical adolescents aged 12-18 years completed a survey containing standardized scales to measure the HEXACO personality traits, impulsivity, effortful control, Dark Triad traits, and symptoms of oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD). RESULTS: The results showed that good traits (in particular, honesty-humility, agreeablene

Non-invasive neuromodulation can reduce aggressive behaviors in humans: A critical perspective.

Containing aggressive behavior is an ongoing challenge in modern society. Aggressiveness is a multi-level construct that can be driven by emotions (reactive aggression) or can be "cold-blooded" and goal-directed (proactive). Aggressive behavior could arise because of a misjudgment of others' intentions or can follow frontal brain lesions leading to a reduction of impulse control and emotion regulation. In the last few years, interventional and basic research studies adopting Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS) have significantly risen. Those techniques have been used both in healthy people,

Is Tourette syndrome a cause of sudden infant death syndrome and childhood obstructive sleep apnea?

The cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is unknown. Sleep-related impairment of respiratory control and arousal are postulated; hyperdopaminergic and hyposerotonergic dysfunction may contribute to events leading to infant apnea and SIDS. Psychosocial adversity and impulsive and compulsive behaviors characterize some families of SIDS victims. Tourette syndrome (TS) is a common hereditary neurobehavioral disorder characterized by the frequent presence of impulsive and compulsive behaviors. Sleep disorders are common and include sleep apnea and abnormal arousal. Hyperdopaminergic and hyp

Efficacy of risperidone and behavioral delineation in METTL5-related syndrome: a pooled analysis of literature and report of a novel variant.

BACKGROUND: METTL5-related neurodevelopmental disorder is a rare autosomal recessive condition characterized by primary microcephaly, intellectual disability, and variable neurobehavioral manifestations. While the genetic etiology is well-established, targeted pharmacological management for the severe neuropsychiatric components of the syndrome remains undefined. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature review of all published METTL5 cases to analyze the phenotypic spectrum, with a specific focus on behavioral dysregulation. Concurrently, we evaluated the clinical and pharmacological

Impaired learning of punishments in Parkinson's disease with and without impulse control disorder.

To document specific learning mechanisms in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) with and without impulse control disorder (ICD). Thirty-two PD patients receiving dopamine replacement therapy (DRT) were investigated. Sixteen were diagnosed with ICD (ICD + ) and 16 PD patients matched for levodopa equivalence dosage, and DRT duration and severity of disease did not show impulsive behavior (non-ICD). Short-term learning of inhibitory control was assessed by an experimental procedure which was intended to mimic everyday life. Correct inhibition especially, had to be learned without reward (pass…

The tryptophan hydroxylase-1 A218C polymorphism is associated with diagnosis, but not suicidal behavior, in borderline personality disorder.

While there is some preliminary evidence that the tryptophan hydroxylase I (TPH1) polymorphisms are related to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), it is not clear if this association is due to the high rates of suicidal behavior in this patient group. Because of the reported association between TPH1 polymorphisms and suicidal behavior, determining whether TPH1 is related to BPD independent of suicidal behavior is of particular importance. One hundred patients diagnosed with BPD and 101 healthy controls were genotyped for TPH1 intron 7 A218C polymorphism and assessed for impulsiveness and ho

Cross-national analysis of the associations among mental disorders and suicidal behavior: findings from the WHO World Mental Health Surveys.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide. Mental disorders are among the strongest predictors of suicide; however, little is known about which disorders are uniquely predictive of suicidal behavior, the extent to which disorders predict suicide attempts beyond their association with suicidal thoughts, and whether these associations are similar across developed and developing countries. This study was designed to test each of these questions with a focus on nonfatal suicide attempts. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Data on the lifetime presence and age-of-onset of Diagnostic and Statist

Temporal discounting for self and friends in adolescence: A fMRI study.

Adolescence is characterized by impulsivity but also by increased importance of friendships. This study took the novel perspective of testing temporal discounting in a fMRI task where choices could affect outcomes for 96 adolescents (aged 10-20-years) themselves and their best friend. Decisions either benefitted themselves (i.e., the Self Immediate - Self Delay' condition) or their friend (i.e., 'Friend Immediate - Friend Delay' condition); or juxtaposed rewards for themselves and their friends (i.e., the 'Self Immediate - Friend Delay' or 'Friend Immediate - Self Delay' conditions). We observ

Clinical features of individuals with schizotypal personality disorder with and without suicidal ideation.

This study compared demographic and clinical features in a sample of 384 participants: healthy controls (HC; n = 166) and individuals with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) with (n = 50) and without (n = 168) suicidal ideation (SI) to examine specific risk factors for suicidality in SPD. Compared to the non-SI group, the SI group showed significantly greater severity of depression, aggression, impulsivity, affective lability, schizotypal features, poorer social adjustment, and had fewer social contacts. Individuals in the SI group were also more likely to have a history of a suicide attem

The comorbidity between Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by severe instability in affect, impulse control, and interpersonal functioning. Existing literature has confirmed that BPD is highly comorbid with other psychiatric conditions, including anxiety disorders. Despite this, little research has investigated the nature of the relationship between generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and BPD. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to synthesize the literature concerning the prevalence and clinical outcomes of BPD and GAD comorbidity in adults. The following

Gaming disorder: A summary of its characteristics and aetiology.

The emergence, development, and maintenance of gaming disorder (GD) is the result of an interplay between gaming-related factors, individual factors, and environmental factors. None of these alone are sufficient to cause a disordered state, but it is the interactive co-occurrence of all these factors, which in some cases leads to GD. The goal of the present paper is to discuss in detail these three factors based on relevant and recent findings of the literature. Among gaming-related factors, we discuss online vs. offline videogames, the role of game genres, structural characteristics, game des

Situational features of smartphone betting are linked to sports betting harm: An ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Smartphones extend the situational characteristics of sports betting beyond those available with land-based and computer platforms. This study examined 1) the role of situational features and betting platforms in harmful betting behaviours and short-term betting harm, and 2) whether people with more gambling problems have preferred situational features, engage more in harmful betting behaviours, and experience more severe short-term betting harm. METHODS: An ecological momentary assessment analysed 1,378 betting sessions on sports, esports or daily fantasy sports, reporte

Investigating gaming structural features associated with gaming disorder and proposing a revised taxonomical model: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gaming disorder (GD) is a mental health concern that has been heavily contested by experts. This scoping review synthesizes the literature to identify the structural features of video game design that can contribute to GD. Furthermore, a taxonomy of the structural features implicated with GD is proposed, revised from earlier work. METHODS: Seven databases, in addition to Google Scholar, were searched. Peer-reviewed studies were included if they assessed a link between gaming structural characteristics and GD or a proxy. The final pool included 105 articles. RESULTS: Avat

Brain morphology, harm avoidance, and the severity of excessive internet use.

As the previous studies have mainly focused on the reward system and the corresponding brain regions, the relationship between brain morphology and excessive internet use (EIU) were not clear; the purpose of the study was to investigate if the brain regions other than the reward system were associated with EIU. Data were acquired from 131 excessive internet users. Psychological measures included internet use, life quality, personality, mental illness symptoms, impulsivity, and thought suppression. The brain was scanned with 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and six types of brain morphologic

Executive functions and personality traits of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy patients: a single-center experience of 23 cases.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), which is a fairly common form of generalized epilepsy syndrome has attracted attention by providing focal findings in some electrophysiological, neuropsychological, and neuroimaging studies. These findings are considered to be based on frontal lobe dysfunction. Furthermore, it is known that Cluster B personality disorders that are related to impulsive behavior are frequently seen in JME patients. METHODS: In this study, 23 JME patients and 20 healthy control subjects were included. All subjects were assessed using neuropsychological tests for exe…
