AIM: To determine whether nasal mucociliary clearance is affected by dry oxygen delivered on demand.
METHODS: Saccharin nasal transit time was measured as an index of nasal mucociliary clearance. One group of patients was given dry oxygen via a nasal cannula and a demand delivery system, and another group was given dry oxygen by continuous inhalation. In each group, continuous inhalation of humidified oxygen served as the control. Saccharin transit time was measured before and after 8 hours of oxygen inhalation.

Six Welsh gelding ponies (weight 246 +/- 6 kg) were premedicated with 0.03 mg/kg of acepromazine intravenously (i.v.) followed by 0.02 mg/kg of detomidine i.v. Difluoromethane (HFC32) is under development as a replacement for chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in some refrigeration applications. It has been evaluated by standard studies of toxicity, developmental toxicity, and genotoxicity. To evaluate whether this response involves a neurogenic component, we delivered a unilateral cold dry air (UniCDA) nasal challenge to volunteers with previously documented reactivity to cold dry air. Presented is a case of successful resuscitation of cardiopulmonary arrest following inhalation of a fluorinated hydrocarbon. Fluorinated hydrocarbons have a direct cardiotoxic effect. We found no previous reports describing resuscitation with good neurologic outcome of a patient in cardiopulmonary arrest subsequent to inhalation of a fluorinated hydrocarbon. We studied the effects of inhaled nitric oxide (NO) in 9 newborn infants with severe persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) who were candidates for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation treatment. With low doses of NO (10-20 ppm) all showed rapid improvement in oxygenation without reduction of systemic blood pressure. In 6 infants treated with inhaled NO for 24 h, clinical improvement was sustained at 6 ppm.
