Three polar poly(para-phenylene ethynylene)s (PPE) were synthesized by utilizing the Heck-Sonogashira protocol. Two of the PPEs carry beta-glucopyranose substituents. Depending upon the linker used between the glycol units and the backbone, the fluorescence of these PPEs can be quenched by Hg2+ and Pb2+ to a varying degree. Monomeric model compounds that are substituted with only one glucose unit are not efficiently quenched. The presence of many glucose substituents in one PPE assembly led to a large increase in the binding constant to Hg2+ and quenching of the fluorescence was amplified.

13CN ion appears to have the greatest potential to probe the heme environment of the ferric heme proteins; however, a resonance of the iron-bound (13)CN ion in ferric heme proteins has not yet been located. We show here the first detection of (13)C NMR signals of the iron-bound (13)CN for heme proteins and their model complexes in an unexpectedly large upfield region. This study demonstrates that the (13)C NMR signal of the iron-bound (13)CN is a sensitive probe to study the nature of the proximal ligand in ferric heme protein.

We investigated the ability of various redox-active metal ions to induce lipid peroxidation in normal and alpha-linolenic acid-loaded (LNA-loaded) cultured rat hepatocytes. Lipid peroxidation was estimated by the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the culture medium. The effect of selenium ions on prostaglandin (PG) catabolism and synthesis in rabbit gastric antral mucosal slices has been examined. Selenium ions had a potent inhibitory effect on the inactivation process for PGE2 and PGF2 alpha. Simultaneously, the levels of PGE2 and PGF2 alpha were increased. These results suggest that selenium ions have the potential to increase the levels of biologically active PGs in gastric mucosa by preventing their inactivation and that this effect may represent some pharmacological action of selenium ions.

Erythrocytes of normal and malnourished children, both marasmic and oedematous (kwashiorkor), were equilibrated in standard incubation medium and their ion transport via the Na/K pump and the pathways of passive permeation were measured as unidirectional fluxes of 86Rb (as a congener of K) and 22Na. Both Hg2+ and CH3Hg+ exert a depressive action on the twitch amplitude elicited by nerve stimulations more rapidly than that by muscle stimulation. CH3Hg+ was relatively more potent than Hg2+ in the nerve depressive action but was weaker on the muscle. This paper describes the irradiation of thin samples of blood with 8.7 MeV protons and 23.5 MeV helium-3 ions in the track segment mode. Chromosome aberrations in human lymphocytes have been scored. The relationship between dicentric yield and dose in Gy was Y = 0.044 D + 0.058 D2 for protons and Y = 0.394 D for helium ions. Thirty five strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis were tested for resistance to penicillin G, erythomycin, metallic ions Zn, As3, As5, Cd, Hg, Pb and activity of beta-lactamase. These studies have shown that the majority of tested staphylococci were resistant to penicillin G, erythromycin, and produced beta-lactamase. No correlation between the activity of beta-lactamase and the resistance to metallic ions has been shown.
