PURPOSE: Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is an innate immune deficiency disorder of phagocytes, resulting from mutations in the components of the NADPH oxidase complex that impair the synthesis of oxygen radicals, thus rendering patients susceptible to recurrent infections and excessive hyperinflammatory responses. A total of 739 (225 H1N1(+)) children with a diagnosis of acute respiratory infection were hospitalized during July to December 2009. The H1N1(+) children were compared with 225 randomly enrolled H1N1(-) children with an influenza-like illness. As compared with influenza-like illness patients, patients with 2009 influenza A/H1N1 were characterized by older age, more vomiting, less hypoxemia and wheezing, lower white blood cell counts, less neutrophilia, and severe lymphopenia.

Outbreaks of meningococcal disease were observed for the first time in the Israel Defence Force (I.D.F.) in 1992 and 1993, while in previous years, cases appeared in sporadic fashion. We conducted a 1-year prospective study in the Negev region of southern Israel to determine the epidemiologic and clinical patterns of rotavirus diarrhea. A total of 605 patients were studied, 392 Bedouins and 213 Jews, 441 of whom had diarrhea (449 episodes) and 164 did not. Rotavirus was the most common organism detected in children with diarrhea (63 of 444; 14%) but was rarely found in controls (3 of 163; 2%) (P less than 0.001). Detailed data about sleep habits, sleep complaints, life style, work, past and present health were obtained from 1,502 industrial workers. In agreement with previous studies, one-third of the workers reported having problems with sleep. A relatively large percentage of workers complained of excessive daytime somnolence (EDS), which was unrelated to sex, age, education, and area of origin. Compared to the total population, workers complaining EDS had signficantly more pre- and postsleep complaints, midsleep disturbing phenomena, and work accidents, and they were less satisfied with their work.
