Hepatitis C virus (HCV) causes a chronic but curable infection associated with the development of marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Preliminary data have shown frequent transformation of indolent lymphoma to DLBCL in HCV-infected patients. To compare their clinicopathologic characteristics and oncologic outcomes, we reviewed the medical records and pathology reports of HCV-infected and uninfected patients with DLBCL that transformed from indolent lymphoma seen at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (June 2004 to May 2015). To identify predict

Patients with double-hit or triple-hit lymphoma have a significantly worse prognosis compared to patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma without MYC rearrangement. However, the prognostic importance of extra copies of MYC, BCL2, or BCL6 has not been fully explored. We studied 663 patients with de novo diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in whom the status of MYC/8q24, BCL2/18q21, and BCL6/3q27 were assessed by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Cases of double or triple extra copy lymphoma were defined by the presence of increased MYC copies and increased BCL2 and/or BCL6 copies or rearrangemen

This report describes the case of a 76-year-old woman diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus-positive diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the elderly. She had an unusual presentation of the disease with widespread skeletal muscle, masticatory muscle, and parotid gland involvement and the development of interesting erythematous lesions in the neck during chemotherapy. One month after completion of chemotherapy, positron-emission tomography (PET) showed features of persistent lymphoma, but a repeat PET scan a month later showed no active disease. This case reiterates 2 important points: firs

A rare case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) possibly induced by IgG4-related disease is described. A 78-year-old woman was presented with a mass of the right lacrimal sac that extended to the inferior nasal meatus through the nasolacrimal duct. Pathological diagnosis was DLBCL with diffuse distribution of IgG4 + cells in the background of this lesion. The chronic inflammatory state of IgG4-related disease could have caused the development of DLBCL.

BACKGROUND: A plethora of options to detect mutations in tumor-derived DNA currently exist but each suffers limitations in analytical sensitivity, cost, or scalability. Droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) is an appealing technology for detecting the presence of specific mutations based on a priori knowledge and can be applied to tumor biopsies, including formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissues. More recently, ddPCR has gained popularity in its utility in quantifying circulating tumor DNA.
METHODS: We have developed a suite of novel ddPCR assays for detecting recurrent mutations that are preva

A 61-year-old Japanese man with IgG4-related autoimmune pancreatitis was referred to our hospital because of perspiration during food intake. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) with contrast media revealed multiple mesenteric lymphadenopathies. An open surgical abdominal biopsy and subsequent histopathological analysis revealed abnormally large lymphoid cells that were negative for CD3, CD5, and c-myc and positive for CD20 and bcl-2, leading to a diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Here, we discuss the risk of malignancies, particularly malignant lymphoma in patients with IgG4-related

OBJECTIVES: Examining the spatial patterns of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) incidence and residential proximity to toxic release locations may provide insight regarding environmental and sociodemographic risk factors.
METHODS: We linked and geocoded cancer incidence data for the period 1999-2008 from the Georgia Comprehensive Cancer Registry with population data from the US Census and the Environmental Protection Agency's Toxics Release Inventory. We conducted cluster analyses and constructed Poisson regression models to assess DLBCL incidence as a function of mean distance to the tox

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a persistent virus with oncogenic capacity that has been implicated in the development of aggressive B cell lymphomas, primarily in immunosuppressed individuals, although it can be present in immunocompetent individuals. Changes in the function and clonal diversity of T lymphocytes might be implied by viral persistence and lymphoma development. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the frequency, phenotype, function and clonotypical distribution of EBV-specific T cells after peripheral blood stimulation with a virus lysate in newly diagnosed patients with dif

The influence of rituximab therapy on prognosis and hepatic toxicity (HT) in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is unclear. Thus, we assessed HT and clinical outcome in patients with DLBCL and HCV infection who received rituximab-containing immunochemotherapy. We carried out a prospective analysis on a total of 280 HCV-positive patients with DLBCL, 200 of whom received chemotherapy plus rituximab (R-CHT), 80 received chemotherapy (CHT)-only. Survival outcomes and HT were compared according to rituximab administration. The median follow-up was 4

Serum albumin (SA) has been shown to be a prognostic marker in many hematological malignancies and in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) prior to chemo-immunotherapy. SA may be a surrogate for age, comorbid status, and disease severity. Here, we aimed to assess whether SA can be an independent prognostic marker in patients with newly diagnosed DLBCL treated with rituximab, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin, and prednisone (R-CHOP). Patients who presented at the Moffitt Cancer Center from 2007 to 2010 for DLBCL diagnosis or treatment were identified using our institutional database.

Development of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positive lymphoproliferative disorders in patients with immunosuppression has become more frequently reported. A patient with acute myeloid leukemia was treated to remission, when on follow-up 9 months after his initial diagnosis, he was noted to have a generalized rash and lymphadenopathy. Evaluation of skin and bone marrow biopsies was suggestive of a relapsed leukemia, and treatment was initiated. Fever evaluation revealed a high load of EBV in his blood. A lymph node biopsy and retrospective examination of his skin and bone marrow revealed an EBV-pos

BACKGROUND: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma sometimes involves the endocrine organs, but involvement of both the pituitary and adrenal glands is extremely rare. Involvement of these structures can lead to hypopituitarism and adrenal insufficiency, and subsequent recovery of their function is rarely seen. The present report describes an extremely rare case of pituitary and adrenal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma presenting with hypopituitarism and adrenal insufficiency with subsequent recovery of pituitary and adrenal function after successful treatment of the lymphoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-yea

Diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCLs) are aggressive B-cell lymphomas that are clinically, pathologically, and genetically diverse, in part reflecting the functional diversity of the B-cell system. The focus in recent years has been toward incorporation of clinical features, morphology, immunohistochemistry, and ever evolving genetic data into the classification scheme. The 2008 World Health Organization classification reflects this complexity with the addition of several new entities and variants. The discovery of distinct subtypes by gene expression profiling heralded a new era with a focu

A detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) method is applied to image analysis. The 2-dimensional (2D) DFA algorithms is proposed for recharacterizing images of lymph sections. Due to Burkitt lymphoma (BL) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), there is a significant different 5-year survival rates after multiagent chemotherapy. Therefore, distinguishing the difference between BL and DLBCL is very important. In this study, eighteen BL images were classified as group A, which have one to five cytogenetic changes. Ten BL images were classified as group B, which have more than five cytogenetic ch

BACKGROUND: Intussusception is defined as the telescoping of a segment of the gastrointestinal tract into an adjacent one. A demonstrable etiology is found in 70% to 90% of cases in adult patients, and about 40% of them are caused by a primary or secondary malignant tumor. The aims of this study were to give an overview of the literature on intussusception due to gastrointestinal lymphoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a case of ileocecal intussusception secondary to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), as well as a literature review of studies published in the English language on intussusceptio
