Human chronic latent magnesium deficiency is estimated to impact a substantive portion of the world's population. A number of magnesium compounds have been developed to combat this deficiency; however, none are ideal due to issues of solubility, absorption, side effects (e.g., laxation) and/or formulation. Here, we describe the pH-dependent synthesis, chemical characterization (inductively coupled plasma and thermal analysis, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance (1D and 2D) spectroscopies, and electrospray mass spectrometry) and in vitro uptake (in a cell model of the large intestine (CaCo-…

Magnesium is an important micronutrient essential for various biological processes and its deficiency has been linked to several inflammatory disorders in humans. Topical magnesium delivery is one of the oldest forms of therapy for skin diseases, for example Dead Sea therapy and Epsom salt baths. Some anecdotal evidence and a few published reports have attributed amelioration of inflammatory skin conditions to the topical application of magnesium. On the other hand, transport of magnesium ions across the protective barrier of skin, the stratum corneum, is contentious. Our primary aim in this s

Magnesium is a vital cation that takes part in many cellular processes. Magnesium balance can be disturbed in multiple conditions, and differences in magnesium concentration can be responsible for numerous physiological and pathological processes. Magnesium deficiency is commonly associated with liver diseases, and may result from low nutrient uptake, greater urinary secretion, low serum albumin concentration, or hormone inactivation. In turn, low magnesium content in serum and liver tissue can lead to the progression of these diseases, due to a disruption in mitochondrial function, defective …

The authors examined in 60 patients with osteoporosis the serum and red cell magnesium and calcium content. Thirty-three patients suffered from senile osteoporosis, 18 patients from postmenopausal osteoporosis and nine had osteoporosis caused by corticoids. In the former two groups were signs of chronic magnesium deficiency, in the third groups there was a trend of low serum calcium levels. The results indicate the important role of magnesium in these disorders of bone metabolism.

We studied renal function and serum electrolytes in 51 patients receiving cisplatin chemotherapy by retrospectively reviewing the charts of 44 patients and prospectively following seven patients. Hypomagnesemia developed in 23 of 44 evaluable patients who were receiving cisplatin. We documented inappropriate renal magnesium wasting in four patients. Two patients required hospitalization for symptomatic hypomagnesemia. We conclude that cisplatin can induce a renal tubular defect in magnesium conservation and serious clinical syndromes of magnesium deficiency.

Repeated blood transfusions in transfusion dependent thalassemia (TDT) leads to iron overload-related endocrine complications. Hypoparathyroidism (HPT) with severe signs of hypocalcemia is a recognized complication among these patients. A 14-year-old thalassaemic boy, on regular transfusion and on anticonvulsant therapy with a presumptive diagnosis of epilepsy for the last 1 year, was admitted with high fever and severe muscle cramps with positive Trousseau's sign. He was diagnosed as a case of primary HPT and magnesium deficiency on the basis of low serum calcium, high phosphate, normal alkal…

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies (MiDs) can increase medical complexity in hospitalized adults, but the prevalence in those without alcohol use disorder (AUD) is unknown. Our objectives were to prospectively determine the prevalence of thiamine, cobalamin, folate, magnesium, and cholecalciferol deficiencies in hospitalized veterans without AUD.
METHODS: Newly hospitalized veterans without AUD were recruited. Plasma thiamine, cholecalciferol, cyanocobalamin, folate, magnesium, C-reactive protein, albumin, and prealbumin were obtained. Interviews, physical exams, and medical record review

Magnesium (Mg), an essential element for plants is easily leached in acidic and sandy soils. Magnesium deficiency induces the initiation and elongation of root hairs, which allows the plant roots to acquire more Mg under Mg-limited conditions. However, the signals involved in the regulatory cascade leading to the induction of root hair development under Mg deficiency are largely unknown to date. Recent studies have revealed that many chemical signal molecules such as ethylene, nitric oxide, auxin, reactive oxygen, and calcium regulate the root hair development induced owing to Mg deficiency. T…

While brain free magnesium levels have been shown to decline in a number of acute and chronic brain pathologies, the mechanisms of such decl … e are susceptible to developing Parkinson's disease, which is consistent with earlier findings that magnesium deficiency over a number of generations is associated with the development of Parkinson's disease. The latter was associated with the appearance of variants of the TRPM channels. Our recent studies have shown that Parkinson's disease is associated with reduced …

Dietary magnesium deficiency has been more damaging to the mast cells in females than in males. Estradiol at a dose of 1.5 mg per week for 4 weeks and testosterone at a dose of 3 mg per week in the males have resulted in lesser mast cell depletion in the magnesium-deficient animals. Large doses of testosterone have also improved in the condition of the skin, decreased the severity of other magnesium deprivation symptoms such as nephrocalcinosis, bone hyperplasia and nervous manifestations in the males. Testosterone has had no beneficial effect on mast cells of the females but the large dose ha…

Levels of lipids, calcium and magnesium in blood and tissue were examined in rabbits to determine the effects of 20% beef tallow diets containing three levels of calcium, less than 0.02, 0.8 or 1.6%. In plasma, the calcium-deficient (less than 0.02%) diet contributed to elevated cholesterol and phospholipid, but had no effect on triglyceride levels. Plasma calcium decreased in the calcium-deficient group and plasma magnesium decreased in the high-calcium (1.6%) group of rabbits. Lipid levels of some tissues varied with the level of dietary calcium. Cholesterol, total phospholipid, sphingomyeli

Idiopathic postneonatal apnea is defined here as a sudden, unexpected attack of apnea that first occurs after the infant has been discharged from the neonatal nursery to his home. Little has been published concerning the patient's physical and clinical laboratory findings during the acute episode. The present report of 20 infants with postneonatal apnea retrospectively addressed these parameters, including all investigations conducted for magnesium deficiency. The first episode of apnea occurred at 48 +/- 12.5 days of age and was unpredicted, transient, and self-limited. In the sickest infants…

Concentrations of both magnesium and potassium were significantly increased in normal heart muscle samples from an area with a soft water supply compared with matched samples from an area with hard water. The zinc contrentration was also slightly increased in the soft water area. The magnesium/potassium ratio was significantly lower in the softwater area. This relative deficiency of magnesium may increase the risk of death after myocardial infarction in soft-water areas.
