Operations to the face and skull can obscure the landmarks that are required to locate the position of the foramen ovale. We describe the use of three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) to guide the approach to the foramen ovale to block the mandibular nerve in a patient with a mandibular deformity that had been caused by segmental mandiblectomy. Successful blockage of the mandibular nerve controlled the pain, contributed to the relief of physical and mental stress, and avoided the side effects of analgesics and pain from inserting the blocking needle.

BACKGROUND: Locking reconstruction plates are used in the treatment of jaw trauma and diseases if there is a need for surgical resection and to prevent pathologic fracture after tumor excision. Fixation is typically performed using an extraoral approach.
METHODS: This article describes a technique for the intraoral fixation of locking reconstruction plates that uses prototyping to model the plate before the procedure as well as an implant handpiece with adapted drills for bone drilling and the insertion of screws into relatively inaccessible areas.

Glandular odontogenic cyst is a newly determined jaw entity with aggressive behavior and a high rate of recurrence. There is histopathologic resemblance to other lesions of the jaw such as intraosseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Although enucleation and curettage are not the treatment of choice for this cystic lesion, they comprise the most common method. On the other hand, filling the defect is a controversial matter, especially in lesions with large size. We introduce 4 cases of GOC, of which 2 are cases of recurrence. We applied bone material substitutes in 3 of these cases with success.

We report an unusual case of Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) presenting with jaw lesions in a 14-year-old Chinese boy. The patient presented initially with mobile teeth in all 4 jaw quadrants, with corresponding radiographic detection of alveolar bone crest destruction and periapical bone resorption in the absence of clinically detectable jaw tumors. Moreover, radiographs taken only 17 days later showed clearly distinguishable signs of more extensive alveolar bone destruction compared with the initial radiographs.

PURPOSE: This study examined patterns of invasion of lower gingiva cancer into the mandible. Our goal was to clarify the most common routes for gingival squamous cell carcinoma to enter and spread within the mandible.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The subjects were 176 patients with lower gingival squamous cell carcinoma who underwent mandibulectomy; all tumors were examined histopathologically. The method of mandibulectomy was decided on the basis of conventional plain radiographic and computed tomographic findings.

Mental nerve neuropathy (MNN), an uncommon neurologic symptom, was observed in three patients with cancer. In the first patient, MNN was the primary manifestation of an occult carcinoma of the lung. The second patient had bilateral MNN. In the third patient, MNN coexisted with symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia as a consequence of a cavum adenocarcinoma. A nontraumatic MNN must be considered a potentially ominous symptom that should prompt a search for cancer.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the postoperative morbidity at the donor site and the long-term outcome after the harvest of bicortical iliac bone grafts, including the iliac crest and the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), by using a confirmed score. Twelve cases of mental nerve neuropathy observed over a 20-month period are reported. Although benign in appearance, the condition frequently is of somber significance being most often, and sometimes initially, associated with malignant diseases. Cancer, and in particular breast cancer, is the most common cause, but malignant blood diseases may also be responsible. Metastatic lesions of the mandible and/or the mental nerve most probably explain why paresthesia and pain in the chin are relieved by local radiotherapy, combined or not with chemotherapy.

Leiomyoma is the most common benign neoplasm in the uterus and stomach but is rare in the oral cavity. There were only 5 oral cases in a series of 7748 leiomyomas of all sites. OBJECTIVES: To identify whether the classic desmoplastic ameloblastoma (DA) is an independent subtype of ameloblastoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-six classic DA and 28 hybrid DA cases were retrieved, and available clinical, radiological, and histopathological data were collected. AIMS: Limited evidence exists on the incidence of osteoradionecrosis (ORN) specifically for oral cavity (OC) cancer alone. The primary objective of this study was to determine the incidence of ORN for each subsite of the OC. The secondary objective was to analyse the risk factors for ORN development.
