PURPOSE: Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) allows imaging of the laryngeal mucosa in a thousand-fold magnification. This study analyzes differences in tissue homogeneity between healthy mucosa and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) via CLE.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included five SCC patients with planned total laryngectomy in this study between October 2020 and February 2021. We captured CLE scans of the tumor and healthy mucosa. Analysis of image homogeneity to diagnose SCC was performed by measuring the signal intensity in four regions of interest (ROI) in each frame in a total of 60 sequence

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The introduction of antiretroviral therapy has significantly impacted the incidence of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) in people living with HIV (PLWH). This manuscript aims to give an overview of the evidence in the literature about this population.
RECENT FINDINGS: PLWH have an increased incidence of HNSCC, with earlier age and more advanced stage at diagnosis. This epidemiologic trend may be explained by combining traditional and HIV-related risk factors. With the improvement of global health status, more patients are candidate for complex therapeutic strat

BACKGROUND: The aim of the current study is to perform an external validation of the prognostic capacity of the H-index in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).
METHODS: Retrospective study of 835 patients with HNSCC located in the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, or larynx.
RESULTS: When applying the cutoffs proposed in the original description of the H-index (1.5 and 3.5), we observed an orderly and significant decrease in the disease-specific survival and overall survival as H-index increased. Additionally, we were able to observe a decrease in survival as the

Introduction: Several studies suggest that there is an association between the metastatic nodal tumor volume and the clinical outcome in patients with solid cancers. However, despite the prognostic potential of nodal volume, a standardized method for estimating the nodal volumetric parameters is lacking. Herein, we conducted a systematic review of the published scientific literature towards investigating the prognostic value of nodal volume in the carcinomas of head and neck, taking into consideration the primary tumor site and the human papillomavirus (HPV) status. Methodological issues: For

HNSCC is a heterogeneous group of tumors located in the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx and larynx. Originally, tobacco and alcohol exposures were the main risk factors for HNSCC. In the last two decades, HPV infections have been identified as a risk factor for HNSCC, especially for oropharyngeal tumors. Whereas the HPV-induced oropharyngeal carcinomas predominantly express the HPV16 related E6 and E7 oncoproteins, the HPV-negative HNSCC are associated with an overexpression of p53. However, if the therapy successes for HPV-negative and HPV-positive HNSCCs are compared, there are signific

BACKGROUND: The Meta-Analysis of Radiotherapy in squamous cell Carcinomas of Head and neck (MARCH) showed that altered fractionation radiotherapy is associated with improved overall and progression-free survival compared with conventional radiotherapy, with hyperfractionated radiotherapy showing the greatest benefit. This update aims to confirm and explain the superiority of hyperfractionated radiotherapy over other altered fractionation radiotherapy regimens and to assess the benefit of altered fractionation within the context of concomitant chemotherapy with the inclusion of new trials.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) is a difficult to treat malignancy and represents the seventh most common cancer worldwide. Systemic therapy has a critical role in the treatment of locally advanced and recurrent/metastatic disease. Cytotoxic chemotherapy has been primarily used along with radiation and surgery, with cisplatin being the standard of care choice of therapy. When contraindications to cisplatin exist, other agents such as carboplatin, taxanes, 5-fluorouracil, and cetuximab are used. Similarly, in the advanced or metastatic setting, platinum agents, taxanes and

Salivary gland neoplasms are rare, comprising less than 5% of pediatric head and neck tumors, with mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) being the most common malignant type. MEC in the parotid gland is exceedingly rare in children. Histologically, MEC tumors consist of squamous cells, mucus-secreting cells, and lymphoid infiltration, reflecting their complex cellular composition. This case report presents a 9-year-old female with a one-year history of progressive, painless swelling in the left cheek, accompanied by facial nerve palsy. Imaging studies revealed a heterogeneously enhancing mass in the

Cutaneous melanoma is the deadliest form of skin neoplasm and its high mortality rates could be averted by early accurate detection. While the detection of melanoma is currently reliant upon melanin visualisation, research into melanosome biogenesis, as a key driver of pathogenesis, has not yielded technology that can reliably distinguish between atypical benign, amelanotic and melanotic lesions. The endosomal-lysosomal system has important regulatory roles in cancer cell biology, including a specific functional role in melanosome biogenesis. Herein, the involvement of the endosomal-lysosomal

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common neoplasm of the equine stomach. However, the mechanisms underlying malignant transformation are unknown. As Equus caballus papillomavirus-2 (EcPV-2) is a likely cause of some genital SCCs, we hypothesized that EcPV-2 is associated with a subset of equine gastric SCCs. To this aim, we performed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and in situ hybridization (ISH) for EcPV-2 E6/ E7 oncogenes on 11 gastric SCCs and on gastric samples from 15 control horses with no SCC. PCR for EcPV-2 was positive in 7/11 (64%) gastric SCCs; non-SCC gastric samples were a

The skin is the most common site of malignancy. Due to several mostly unknown factors, the frequency of skin tumors is increasing. Except for malignant melanoma, reliable statistical data on the frequency of skin tumors are scarce. Discussion on the epidemiology of skin tumors may take different aspects and factors into consideration: (1) histogenetic type; (2) race, (3) sex; (4) age, (5) localization; (6) environment. Moreover, precancerous conditions also may play an important role in this context. Epithelial tumors, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are the most f

OBJECTIVE: There is controversy regarding bilateral neck dissection for cN0 supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma. This study aimed to explore the risk factor of occult isolated contralateral/bilateral metastasis in cN0 supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma and help clinicians better make assessments for these patients.
METHOD: PubMed, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, and CBM were systematically searched for studies on occult lymph node metastasis in cN0 supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma from the inception of each database to May 30, 2024. All patients with supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma an

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this review is to assess the survival outcomes of patients affected by oral cavity and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) treated with electrochemotherapy (ECT). Secondarily, the authors aim to quantify these outcomes according to treatment intent (curative versus palliative) and to evaluate potential prognostic factors influencing survival.
METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive search was carried out in Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library databases to ident
