Several authors believe that a compression syndrome of the radial nerve or its muscle branches is responsible for the clinical picture of radiohumeral epicondylopathy. Various structural and functional stenoses have been discussed as possible causes. We performed systematic electromyographies (EMGs) on the extensors subdividing from the radial epicondyle and found significant changes (P < 0.05) in 27/51 patients regarding latency, velocity of nerve conduction and rate of polyphasic potentials. Especially affected were the extensor carpi radialis brevis and the extensor digitorum muscle. In ord

Ocular pathology can be associated with inter-ocular asymmetry of conduction latency. We describe a relatively low-cost psychophysical method of quantifying this asymmetry of delay, an 'inter-ocular temporal asynchrony' (IOTA) system. Testing of 28 visually normal young adults gave IOTA results with a mean of 0.11 ms (SD +/- 2.4 ms). These results correspond to 95% confidence limits of -4.6 ms and +4.8 ms. Inter-ocular differences in retinal illumination, induced by using monocular neutral density filters in visually normal subjects, significantly affected IOTA in accord with an imposed percep

The successful recovery of sensibility across a long peripheral nerve allograft in a 12-year-old boy who sustained a severe posterior tibial nerve injury is reported. The historical clinical experience with nerve allotransplantation is also reviewed. It is concluded that in the carefully selected patient with severe nerve injury, consideration for nerve allotransplantation can be given.

Using magnetic stimulation techniques in addition to conventional electrical stimulation, the entire facial motor pathway can be assessed electrophysiologically. To study the diagnostic yield of these examinations, 174 patients with facial palsies of a variety of etiologies were examined (85 Bell's palsies, 24 Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), 19 Lyme borreliosis, 17 zoster oticus, 12 meningeal affections, 10 brain-stem disorders and 7 HIV-related facial palsies). The facial nerve was stimulated electrically at the stylomastoid fossa and magnetically within its canalicular portion. Additionally,

We describe a technique of magnetic coil (MC) stimulation of the thoracic spinal nerves and roots in 12 normal subjects and a patient with diabetes mellitus. We kept the MC flat against the vertebral column in the midline over T-7, T-8, and T-9 spinous processes and obtained compound muscle action potentials from the upper rectus abdominis, external oblique, and intercostal muscles. We obtained mean latencies to these muscles after stimulation in the posterior axillary line. We noted that the onset latencies remained fixed despite increasing the intensity of stimulation from 30% to 100% and on

The use of phenol motor nerve blocks is advantageous in the early period of acquired spasticity (ie, that occurring following traumatic brain injury or incomplete spinal cord injury), when increased muscle tone is often the most severe. Because acquired spasticity is dynamic and usually improves slowly, a temporary treatment method used to ameliorate increased muscle tone is desirable. Phenol nerve infiltration provides a temporary motor nerve block that lasts for weeks or months. It allows passive limb mobilization in a comprehensive rehabilitation program that attempts to prevent fixed soft

The symptoms and signs which constitute the carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) result from entrapment or compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel. Electrodiagnostic studies may objectively document the presence of median neuropathy within the carpal tunnel and help distinguish CTS from other disorders such as cervical radiculopathy, neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome, proximal median nerve compression syndromes, and polyneuropathy which may either mimic or occasionally coexist with CTS. Recording median nerve responses with wrist and palm stimulation allows determination of the wris

The authors examined clinically, by EMG and by electrostimulation the motor and sensory fibers of the median nerve in 15 control hands (group A), 35 hands with the paresthetic form of CTS (group B), and 33 hands with CTS and pathologic DML (group C). The examination of the sensory fibers was performed on the first (thumb) to 4th digits separately by the orthodromic technique with monitoring the NAP by needle electrodes from the wrist. Two hundred fifty six responses were averaged out and always 4 stimulatory values were followed on the sensory fibers. The highest percentage of pathologic value

A 38-year-old woman developed acute, severe weakness during the treatment of status asthmaticus that included high-dose intravenous corticosteroids. A muscle biopsy and EMG indicated a myopathy, and nerve conduction studies disclosed a neuropathic component. In association with corticosteroid tapering, the clinical, EMG, and nerve conduction abnormalities resolved. In some patients, intensive treatment of status asthmaticus may cause a reversible, toxic disorder of muscle and nerve.

It was shown, that the lesion of the sciatic nerve leads to disturbance of functioning of mineralocorticoid receptors of kidneys, which was expressed primarily as deterioration of the Na+ reabsorption in the kidneys ductulus cells. Simultaneous pharmacological blockade by propranolol's injections of neuroconductive and humoral pathways of transmission to the kidneys of pathological stimulus, caused in result of chronic irritation of sciatic nerve, prevents the development of disturbance in kidney's mineralocorticoid receptor apparatus functioning to a more extent, than the blockade of the neur

The authors report a case of brachial vein epithelioid hemangioendothelioma resembling a median nerve neoplasm clinically and radiologically. It was found as a mass closely attached to median nerve and arising from one of two brachial veins. Simple resection, requiring sacrifice of the vein, allowed nerve median sparing but recurrence occurred one year later. Hemangioendothelioma should be also considered in differential diagnosis and in the planning surgery of arm median nerve masses. Wide local excision is surgical treatment recommended in those cases when regional lymph nodes or systemic me

We report two patients with multifocal demyelinating motor neuropathy whose symptoms improved after immunoglobulin infusion. Clinical signs included atrophy of the tongue and limb muscles, closely resembling that of motor neuron disease. Nerve conduction studies revealed multiple sites of motor conduction block without sensory abnormalities, suggesting selective involvement of motor fibers. Careful documentation of conduction block is required to diagnose this entity, which may be treated with immunoglobulin therapy.

Electrodiagnostic tests-needle EMG, nerve conduction and somatosentory evoked potential (SEP) studies of the upper and the lower limbs were performed in three patients during the subacute phase of poliomyelitis. Although poliomyelitis is traditionally considered a "pure motor" disease, involvement of the sensory system was demonstrated by prolonged sensory nerve conduction and by delayed latencies and amplitude asymmetries of SEPs obtained from the lower limbs. Sensory deficit in poliomyelitis is well known to exist during the acute phase of illness. The present report describes the electrophy

The minimum ambient partial pressure required to reversibly disrupt conducted responses in myelinated nerve fibers (Pblock) was determined for 11 gases and chloroform. For all but one substance, Pblock was inversely proportional to their nonaqueous solubility; large-diameter fibers were less vulnerable than fibers of small diameter. No "anesthetic" effect was displayed by SF6. At the Pblock for three of the agents, the time for completion of their anesthetic action (tb) was proportional to their lipid-to-aqueous solubility ratio. When the ratio was large, tb was longer than when the ratio was

Peripheral nerve involvement is rare in polymyositis and dermatomyositis. We describe a patient in whom the clinical appearance was suggestive of a markedly asymmetrical presentation of polymyositis. Nerve conduction studies, however, were consistent with multiple neuropathies and suggest that neurological involvement may have been the basis of the asymmetrical weakness. Both the muscle weakness and the neurological abnormalities resolved with corticosteroid therapy. This case illustrates a previously undescribed neurological complication of polymyositis.

Cough and airway constriction are common features of respiratory diseases. Both can be caused by stimulation of airway nerves. We have studied the effects of airway anaesthesia on these reflexes, stimulated by inhaled capsaicin, in order to determine whether they are controlled by the same sensory nerves. Ten volunteers had capsaicin cough dose responses performed before and at 10 min after inhaling placebo (ascorbic acid in saline), and the topical anaesthetics lignocaine 40 mg, and dyclonine 8 and 4 mg. The effect of the drugs on respiratory resistance (Rrs), measured using a forced oscillat
