Existence of hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS) during spring haze and sandstorm events in Beijing: Implications for a heterogeneous formation pathway on mineral aerosols.

Hydroxymethylsulfonate (HMS) is an abundant secondary organic aerosol from aqueous or heterogeneous processes and may be misidentified as sulfate in conventional measurements. High concentrations of HMS have been observed in humid winter and autumn haze in northern China, while its prevalence in other seasons is unclear and the production medium is controversial. In this study, our field measurements in Beijing during the 2021 spring first showed the presence of HMS in PM2.5 during both haze and sandstorm events despite the different atmospheric conditions. HMS accounted for 0.44% of PM2.5 dur

PM2.5 anomaly detection for exceptional event demonstrations: A Texas case study.

The shifting frontiers of air pollution emission sources contribute to stagnation or reversal of air quality gains across the United States (US). The frequency and possible duration of Exceptional Events - driven primarily by wildfires and dust storms - have significantly increased in the US over the past decade. Combined with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) final rule strengthening primary annual National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for PM2.5 by 25%, communities will need to reevaluate domestic and international sources of PM2.5.This study applies the Isolation Forest m

Associations between landscape fires and child morbidity in southern Mozambique: a time-series study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological evidence linking exposure to landscape fires to child health remains scarce. We assessed the association between daily landscape fire smoke and child hospital visits and admissions in the Manhiça district, Mozambique, an area characterised by frequent forest and cropland fires. METHODS: In this time-series analysis (2012-20), our primary metric for exposure to landscape fires was fire-originated PM2·5 from smoke dispersion hindcasts. We also assessed total and upwind fire exposure using daily satellite-derived fire density data. Daily numbers of hospital visits and

Astaxanthin alleviates PM2.5-induced cardiomyocyte injury via inhibiting ferroptosis.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure of humans to air pollution is associated with an increasing risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Astaxanthin (AST), a naturally occurring red carotenoid pigment, was proved to have multiple health benefits. However, whether or not AST also exerts a protective effect on fine particulate matter (PM2.5)-induced cardiomyocyte damage and its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: In vitro experiments, the H9C2 cells were subjected to pretreatment with varying concentrations of AST, and then cardiomyocyte injury model induced by PM2.5 was established. The c…

Short-term exposure to urban PM2.5 particles induces histopathological and inflammatory changes in the rat small intestine.

Air pollution and exposure to fine airborne particles with aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm (PM2.5 ) negatively impacts human health. Airways constitute a primary route of exposure but PM2.5 -contaminated food, drinks as well as mucociliary and hepatobiliary clearance all constitute potential entry points into the intestine. This study evaluated intestinal histopathological and inflammatory changes as well as enteric neuronal numbers after short- or long-term exposure to urban PM2.5 . Using a nebulizer, male rats were exposed to a mist with a concentration of 5.3mg PM2.5 /m3 for 8 h (short term) o

Green complexity, economic fitness, and environmental degradation: evidence from US state-level data.

Green production is one of the major debates as environmental degradation poses threats globally. The paper attempts to explore the relation … hat exporting more complex green products has insignificant effects on local (i.e., sulfur dioxide, particulate Matter 10) and global polluters such as carbon dioxide, even accounting for per capita income. Yet, economic fitness has a significant negative impact on the emission levels implying that sophisticated production significantly improves environmental qualit …

Effects of air pollution on human health - Mechanistic evidence suggested by in vitro and in vivo modelling.

Airborne particulate matter (PM) comprises both solid and liquid particles, including carbon, sulphates, nitrate, and toxic heavy metals, which can induce oxidative stress and inflammation after inhalation. These changes occur both in the lung and systemically, due to the ability of the small-sized PM (i.e. diameters ≤2.5 μm, PM2.5) to enter and circulate in the bloodstream. As such, in 2016, airborne PM caused ∼4.2 million premature deaths worldwide. Acute exposure to high levels of airborne PM (eg. during wildfires) can exacerbate pre-existing illnesses leading to hospitalisation, such as in…

Concentration-dependent health effects of air pollution in controlled human exposures.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is a leading contributor to premature mortality worldwide and is often represented by particulate matter (PM), a key contributor to its harmful health effects. Concentration-response relationships are useful for quantifying the effects of air pollution in relevant populations and in considering potential effect thresholds. Controlled human exposures can provide data on acute effects and concentration-response relationships that complement epidemiological studies. OBJECTIVES: We examined PM concentration-responses after controlled human air pollution exposures to exam…

Exploring common factors influencing PM2.5 and O3 concentrations in the Pearl River Delta: Tradeoffs and synergies.

Particulate matter with an aerodynamic equivalent dimeter less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) are major air pollutants, with coupled and complex relationships. The control of both PM2.5 and O3 pollution requires the identification of their common influencing factors, which has rarely been attempted. In this study, land use regression (LUR) models based on the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator were developed to estimate PM2.5 and O3 concentrations in China's Pearl River Delta region during 2019. The common factors in the tradeoffs between the two air pollutants and their syner…

PM2.5 composition and sources in the San Joaquin Valley of California: A long-term study using ToF-ACSM with the capture vaporizer.

The San Joaquin Valley (SJV) of California has suffered persistent particulate matter (PM) pollution despite many years of control efforts. To further understand the chemical drivers of this problem and to support the development of State Implementation Plan for PM, a time-of-flight aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ToF-ACSM) outfitted with a PM2.5 lens and a capture vaporizer has been deployed at the Fresno-Garland air monitoring site of the California Air Resource Board (CARB) since Oct. 2018. The instrument measured non-refractory species in PM2.5 continuously at 10-min resolution. In th…

Short-Term Association of Air Pollutant Levels and Hospital Admissions for Stroke and Effect Modification by Apparent Temperature: Evidence From Shanghai, China.

The epidemiological evidence on relationships between air pollution, temperature, and stroke remains inconclusive. Limited evidence is available for the effect modification by apparent temperature, an indicator reflecting reactions to the thermal environment, on short-term associations between air pollution and hospital admissions for stroke. We used a generalized additive model with Poisson regression to estimate the relative risk (RR) of stroke admissions in Shanghai, China, between 2014 and 2016 associated with air pollutants, with subgroup analyses by age, sex, apparent temperature, and se

Review: Strategies for using satellite-based products in modeling PM2.5 and short-term pollution episodes.

Short-term air pollution episodes motivate improved understanding of the association between air pollution and acute morbidity and mortality episodes, and triggers required mitigation plans. A variety of methods have been employed to estimate exposure to air pollution episodes, including GIS-based dispersion models, interpolation between sparse monitoring sites, land-use regression models, optimization models, line- or area-dispersion plume models, and models using information from imaging satellites, often including land-use and meteorological variables. There has been increasing use of satel

Assessment of Interactions between Transition Metals and Atmospheric Organics: Ascorbic Acid Depletion and Hydroxyl Radical Formation in Organic-Metal Mixtures.

Excessive oxidative stress has been recognized as an important cause of the adverse health effects associated with exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM). Transition metals (TMs) (e.g., iron (Fe) and copper (Cu)) are known catalysts in the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in surrogate lung fluid containing antioxidants. Humic-like substances (HULIS), extracted from atmospheric aerosols, retain the compositional complexity of real-world samples. It contains mixtures of organics that chelate TMs and was used in this work to examine the roles of atmospheric organics in affecting RO…

In Situ Measurements of Molecular Markers Facilitate Understanding of Dynamic Sources of Atmospheric Organic Aerosols.

Reducing the amount of organic aerosol (OA) is crucial to mitigation of particulate pollution in China. We present time and air-origin dependent variations of OA markers and source contributions at a regionally urban background site in South China. The continental air contained primary OA markers indicative of source categories, such as levoglucosan, fatty acids, and oleic acid. Secondary OA (SOA) markers derived from isoprene and monoterpenes also exhibited higher concentrations in continental air, due to more emissions of their precursors from terrestrial ecosystems and facilitation of anthr

Effects of Fuel Moisture Content on Emissions from a Rocket-Elbow Cookstove.

Exposure to air pollution from solid-fuel cookstoves is a leading risk factor for premature death; however, the effect of fuel moisture content on air pollutant emissions from solid-fuel cookstoves remains poorly constrained. The objective of this work was to characterize emissions from a rocket-elbow cookstove burning wood at three different moisture levels (5%, 15%, and 25% on a dry mass basis). Emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane, fine particulate matter (PM2.5), PM2.5 elemental carbon (EC), PM2.5 organic carbon, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzene, toluene, eth…

Effects of atmospheric-plasma system on energy efficiency improvement and emissions reduction from a diesel engine.

Efficient energy usage and energy saving is one of the nowadays necessity for all scientists of IC engine. This is because of the current en … es pollutants emissions levels. Hence, such reduction is predominantly evident for nitrogen oxides, particulate matters and carbon monoxide. However, the marginal improvements of engine performance and emissions reduction become insignificant when the plasma system voltage reaches 6 kV. On the other hand, increasing the amount of plasma system voltages in diesel eng …

Environmental sustainability and travel within the dental practice.

A significant amount of dentistry's carbon emissions originate from travel (64.5%). Dental-associated travel affects air quality, releasing over 443 tonnes of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 22 tonnes of particulate matter (PM2.5) annually. This reduction in air quality reduces over 325 quality-adjusted life years (QALY) per year. Wider health impacts associated with noise and traffic incidents doubles the impact on health in QALYs. Dental procedures that require shorter appointment times have disproportionately higher emissions due to patient travel. The dental team can reduce appointment times by …

Identification of diverse air pollution sources in a complex urban area of Croatia.

Pinpointing the contribution of sources in complex urban areas, affected by large point sources such as oil refineries, is important for developing emission control strategies. Receptor models based on the chemical composition of particulate matter (PM), such as chemical mass balance (CMB) and positive matrix factorization (PMF), are useful means for source apportionment, but the inclusion of other gaseous pollutants need further consideration. The results of the multipollutant analyses using temporal variations in pollutant concentrations, chemical PM speciation and receptor modeling, PMF and…
