Parental age effects on neonatal white matter development.

OBJECTIVE: Advanced paternal age is associated with poor offspring developmental outcome. Though an increase in paternal age-related germline mutations may affect offspring white matter development, outcome differences could also be due to psychosocial factors. Here we investigate possible cerebral changes prior to strong environmental influences using brain MRI in a cohort of healthy term-born neonates. METHODS: We used structural and diffusion MRI images acquired soon after birth from a cohort (n = 275) of healthy term-born neonates. Images were analysed using a customised tract based spati

The intergenerational transmission of problem gambling: The mediating role of parental psychopathology.

The present study investigated the intergenerational transmission of problem gambling and the potential mediating role of parental psychopathology (problem drinking, drug use problems, and mental health issues). The study comprised 3953 participants (1938 males, 2015 females) recruited from a large-scale Australian community telephone survey of adults retrospectively reporting on parental problem gambling and psychopathology during their childhood. Overall, 4.0% [95%CI 3.0, 5.0] (n=157) of participants reported paternal problem gambling and 1.7% [95%CI 1.0, 2.0] (n=68) reported maternal proble

The association between tobacco and the risk of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema in children and adolescents: analyses from Phase Three of the ISAAC programme.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to parental smoking is associated with wheeze in early childhood, but in 2006 the US Surgeon General stated that the evidence is insufficient to infer a causal relationship between exposure and asthma in childhood and adolescents. AIMS: To examine the association between maternal and paternal smoking and symptoms of asthma, eczema and rhinoconjunctivitis. METHODS: Parents or guardians of children aged 6-7 years completed written questionnaires about symptoms of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema, and several risk factors, including maternal smoking in the child's fir

Interplay between childhood maltreatment, parental bonding, and gender effects: impact on quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine associations between childhood adversity, parental bonding, gender, depressive symptoms, and quality of life in non-treatment-seeking adults from the community. METHOD: Effects of differential parental rearing were compared in adults who reported a high degree of childhood maltreatment (n=72) and those who reported no significant adverse events in childhood (n=69). Subjects completed retrospective measures of childhood maltreatment and perceived parenting style, as well as measures of current depressive symptoms and quality of life. RESULTS: Th

Lymphocyte immunotherapy and its probable mechanism in the maintenance of pregnancy in women with recurrent spontaneous abortion.

INTRODUCTION: Most women with alloimmune cause of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) includes increased sharing of human leukocyte antigens (HLA) that may prohibit the mother from making anti-paternal cyto-toxic antibodies (APCA), anti-idiotypic antibodies (Ab2) and mixed lymphocyte reaction blocking antibodies (MLR-Bf). Overactivity of T helper-1 (Th-1) cytokines and natural killer (NK) cells have been also reported to be the major alloimmune cause of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). It was revealed from extensive updated analysis of this subject that paternal lymphocytes immunotherapy

Countering infanticide: Chimpanzee mothers are sensitive to the relative risks posed by males on differing rank trajectories.

OBJECTIVES: Infanticide by males is common in mammals. According to the sexual selection hypothesis, the risk is inversely related to infant age because the older the infant, the less infanticide can shorten lactational amenorrhea; risk is also predicted to increase when an infanticidal male's chance of siring the replacement infant is high. Infanticide occurs in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), a species in which male dominance rank predicts paternity skew. Infanticidal male chimpanzees (if low-ranking) are unlikely to kill their own offspring, whereas those who are currently rising in rank, pa…

Porcine sperm zona binding ability as an indicator of fertility.

The escalated use of artificial insemination in swine has increased the importance of determining fertility of a semen sample before it is used. Multiple laboratory assays have been developed to assess fertilizing potential but they have yielded inconsistent results. This experiment sought to determine the relationship between in vitro competitive zona binding ability and in vivo fertility based on heterospermic inseminations and paternity testing. The zona pellucida binding ability and fertility of sperm from 15 boars was assessed by comparing sperm from one boar with sperm from other individ…

BACKGROUND: The changes in spermatogenesis after parathyroidectomy in patients with symptomatic secondary hyperparathyroidism have not been … gy had no significant improvements. One patient, who had oligospermia with primary infertility, had paternity 6 months after parathyroidectomy, though his oligospermia remained unchanged at that time. CONCLUSION: After parathyroidectomy, the sperm motility index and percentage of active motility can be improved. We speculate that increases in fertilization …

Parental leave in medical school: supporting students as parents.

CONTEXT: The overlap between medical school, residency, and childbearing potential increases the likelihood a woman will pursue parenthood within her, or her partner's, medical training. Parental leave benefits mothers, fathers, and infants. Adequate parental leave promotes physical recovery, mental health, infant bonding, improved breastfeeding, appropriate childhood immunization, and familial engagement. Despite the risks and benefits, the United States does not have national paid maternity, paternity, or parental leave requirements. Complicating matters for medical trainees, parental leave …

Oxidative stress in sperm affects the epigenetic reprogramming in early embryonic development.

BACKGROUND: Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced oxidative stress is well known to play a major role in male infertility. Sperm are sensitive to ROS damaging effects because as male germ cells form mature sperm they progressively lose the ability to repair DNA damage. However, how oxidative DNA lesions in sperm affect early embryonic development remains elusive. RESULTS: Using cattle as model, we show that fertilization using sperm exposed to oxidative stress caused a major developmental arrest at the time of embryonic genome activation. The levels of DNA damage response did not directly cor

Parental preconception exposure to phenol and phthalate mixtures and the risk of preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Parental preconception exposure to select phenols and phthalates was previously associated with increased risk of preterm birth in single chemical analyses. However, the joint effect of phenol and phthalate mixtures on preterm birth is unknown. METHODS: We included 384 female and 211 male (203 couples) participants seeking infertility treatment in the Environment and Reproductive Health (EARTH) Study who gave birth to 384 singleton infants between 2005 and 2018. Family-Based Interpretation of a Prenatally Detected 15q11.2 Duplication.

Chromosome region 15q11-q13 is prone to structural rearrangements and contains imprinted genes associated with several neurodevelopmental syndromes. In this report, we present the case of a 518 kb duplication in 15q11.2, identified prenatally through array comparative genomic hybridization. Parental testing revealed that the duplication was paternally inherited and originated from the asymptomatic paternal grandmother. The duplicated region harbored the OMIM genes TUBGCP5, CYFIP1, NIPA1, and NIPA2, all of which presented biallelic expression and were not subjected to genomic imprinting. Given

Infertility in the Aging Male.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In many countries, the average age of paternity is rising. The negative effect of older age on fertility in women is well documented; however, less is known about the impact of paternal age on fecundity. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of how paternal age affects semen parameters, reproductive success, and offspring health. RECENT FINDINGS: Contemporary evidence confirms that aged men have worse semen parameters, including overall negative changes in sperm genetics. Reproductive outcomes with unassisted pregnancy tend to be worse with older fathers. While…

Attachment states of mind and inferred childhood experiences in maltreated and comparison adolescents from low-income families.

This paper reports the first large-sample investigation of the maltreatment-related correlates of low-income adolescents' narratives about their childhood experiences with primary caregivers, as assessed with a modified version of the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and based on official reports of abuse and neglect (maltreated n = 214, nonmaltreated n = 140; M age = 16.7 years). Drawing on factor-analytic and taxometric evidence indicating that AAI narratives vary along two state of mind (i.e., dismissing and preoccupied) and two inferred childhood experience (i.e., maternal and paternal) di

Partial hydatidiform mole diagnosis in a cat: a case report.

A case of a stillborn Norwegian Forest kitten characterised in the course of anatomopathological and genetic examination is reported. The hydatidiform mole was diagnosed by delayed development, low birth weight of the kitten and abnormal placental development. Anatomopathological diagnosis was confirmed in genetic tests based on the amplification of highly heterozygous microsatellite sequences located on the X (FCA311) and autosomal chromosomes (FCA506, FCA532 and FCA178), as well as the sex-specific Sry and amelogenin (Amel) genes. The presence of two microsatellite alleles of paternal origin

The parental origin of the single X chromosome in Turner syndrome: lack of correlation with parental age or clinical phenotype.

We have used X- and Y-linked RFLPs to determine the origin of the single X chromosome in 25 live-born individuals with Turner syndrome. We determined that 18 individuals retained a maternal X (Xm) and that seven retained the paternal X (Xp). No occult mosaicism was detected. We found no differences in either maternal or paternal ages for the two groups. The ratio of maternal X to paternal X is just over 2:1, which is consistent with the expected proportion of meiotic or mitotic products, with equal loss at each step, given the nonviability of 45,Y. Six phenotypic or physiologic characteristics

Experimental studies on the influence of male alcoholism on fetal development.

To study the effect of paternal chronic ethanol consumption on fetal development, an experimental rat model was established and compared to the fetal alcohol syndrome. Male and female Wistar rats were divided into 30% ethanol (E) and control groups. Before mating and during pregnancy the ethanol group and control group received E and water, respectively. Pregnancies were terminated on gestational day 21. The body weight, liver weight, blood glucose, serum insulin and cerebral CNPase activity were decreased in alcoholic males. The adverse effect of maternal chronic ethanol on fetal development
