Cerebral asymmetry in facial affect perception by women: neuropsychological effects of depressed mood.

40 right-handed women, half of whom had been classified with depressed mood and the other half as nondepressed, participated in a tachistoscopic study of the influence of depressed mood on the cerebral hemispheric processing of Ekman and Friesen's 1976 happy, sad, and neutral emotional faces using a forced-choice reaction-time paradigm with only happy and sad alternatives as response manipulanda. The women with depressed mood were also characterized by elevated scores on both state and trait anxiety, suggestive of an anxious-depressive state with heightened arousal. Primary findings for the ta

Effects of noise on mental performance with regard to subjective noise sensitivity.

Objective and subjective effects of moderate levels of recorded traffic noise [Leq = 55 dB(A) and 75 dB(A)] on mental performance were studied in a laboratory setting. A total of 45 subjects (23 males and 22 females) were investigated with respect to subjective noise sensitivity (SNS). Four cognitive tasks were applied involving different psychological functions: Short-Term Memory (STM), Search and Memory 5 (SAM 5) (vigilance), Hidden Figures (HF) (spatial reasoning) and Mental Arithmetic (MA) (parallel processing). Three groups of 15 subjects were defined according to their scores on Weinstei

The computation of perceptual structure from collinearity and closure: normality and pathology.

Three experiments tested how structural information affects the processing of fragmented forms, using evidence from both normal subjects and an agnosic patient. The stimuli were either (a) outline drawings of objects; (b) "well" or "poorly" structured fragmented forms derived from outline drawings (Experiments 1 and 2) or (c) "well" or "poorly" structured fragmented forms derived from outline drawings of meaningless forms (Experiment 3). "Well" and "poorly" structured forms varied on the properties of collinearity and closure of the elements. Subjects decided if two simultaneously presented fo

Implicit learning of new faces in prosopagnosia: an application of the mere-exposure paradigm.

A prosopagnosic patient was shown faces with which he had no prior experience, and was then given two-alternative forced choice recognition ("which of these faces did you see before?") and preference ("which of these faces do you like better?") tasks to assess learning. The patient showed normal preference for target faces, despite the fact that recognition of the faces was nil. This suggests that at least some prosopagnosics show implicit learning of new faces. The patient's normal preference for target faces is conceptualized as a "perceptual fluency" effect similar to that seen in more glob

Left and right-handed dyslexic boys: an empirical test of some assumptions of the Geschwind-Behan hypothesis.

Twenty-six dyslexic boys (13 left-handers and 13 right-handers) were tested for hemispheric asymmetry with dichotic listening (DL) and a visual half-field test (VHF). The purpose of the study was an empirical test of the Geschwind-Behan [Proc. natn. Acad. Sci. USA 79, 5097-5100, 1982] hypothesis of a difference in hemispheric asymmetry between left- and right-handed dyslexic boys. Following Geschwind and Behan, left-handedness and dyslexia are caused by a common factor affecting the development of the left hemisphere in utero which results in a right hemisphere dominance. As a consequence, han

Spatiotemporal responses of the visual system in demyelinating diseases.

Previous studies have shown that, in patients with lesions of the visual pathway, contrast sensitivity (CS) measured with stationary sine-wave gratings can demonstrate deficits, that is, anomalies in pattern detection. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether temporal processing can be affected in demyelinating lesions of the visual pathway. CS was measured for eight spatial frequencies (SF), using stationary and temporally modulated stimuli in a group of 10 patients with multiple sclerosis or optic neuritis. A control group was composed of 48 normal eyes. With stationary stimuli,

Simultanagnosia: effects of semantic category and repetition blindness.

When confronted with two identical stimuli in a very brief period of time subjects often fail to report the second stimulus, a phenomenon termed "repetition blindness". The "type-token" account attributes the phenomenon to a failure to individuate the exemplars. We report a subject, KE, who developed simultanagnosia (the inability to see more than one item in an array) as a consequence of bilateral parietal lobe infarctions. With presentation of two words, pictures or letters for an unlimited time, KE typically reported both stimuli on less than half of trials. Performance was significantly in

Spatial-numerical associations survive spatial frequency equalization in an adult unimanual SNARC task.

The origins of spatial-numerical associations (SNAs), such as the SNARC (Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes) effect, remain debated. The Brain's Asymmetric Frequency Tuning (BAFT) hypothesis recently proposed that non-symbolic SNAs may arise from hemispheric asymmetries in spatial frequency (SF) processing, rather than reflecting a genuine spatial representation of number. Here we examined whether SNAs persist even in adult human cognition when both SF cues and, crucially, bimanual response confounds are eliminated. Participants performed a Go/No-Go non-symbolic magnitude comparis

The temporal dynamics of semantic guidance in scenes.

When viewing a complex scene, the visual system must decide where to look among many potential targets. How this selection process unfolds over time-and whether it reflects changing semantic priorities-remains poorly understood. We tracked eye movements of 100 participants viewing 100 real-world scenes and modeled four distinct semantic features at each location: similarity to the scene category, similarity to other objects, similarity to the most recently fixated object, and local semantic intensity. Complementary Bayesian models of fixation likelihood and fixation onset time revealed that ea

Lexical word processing is unaffected by rapid invisible frequency tagging in reading: Evidence from eye movements.

The aim of this study was to test whether rapid invisible frequency tagging (RIFT)-a promising tool to directly measure covert attention allocated to parafoveal words-affects lexical processing during natural reading. RIFT involves flickering the background of the target word(s) at an imperceptible frequency (≥60 Hz), but imperceptibility does not necessarily equate to the absence of a cognitive effect. The current study examined the potential impact of the RIFT paradigm on eye movements. Forty-eight participants read 474 high-frequency and low-frequency target words that were embedded in one-

A novel cross-modal perceptual effect: Sound-induced increase of the non-contact illusion.

Recent research demonstrates that if two identical squares moving uniformly towards each other suddenly disappear when their leading edges contact, participants will have an illusory perception of the two squares as non-contact before their disappearance. Inspired by the "sound-induced visual segmentation" hypothesis that when two approaching 2D objects reach their closest state, a coincident sound will lead to an overestimation of their distance, the current study explored whether a task-irrelevant sound delivered when the two squares make contact can enhance this non-contact illusion and exa

Do Readers Simulate the Color of Inferred Objects? Influence of Sentence Typicality and Context Position.

Embodied cognition assumes that language processing involves sensory, motor, and affective representations. However, further empirical research is required to reveal how embodied representations are used in language processing. This study investigated whether readers could represent the color of an object and whether the color was influenced by context. Thirty-five native English speakers performed a semantic Stroop task in which a sentence was presented (e.g., Joe was excited to see a bear in the woods/at the North Pole) to them. They were then presented with a word from the sentence (bear) i

Deaf signers target saccades more accurately to the optimal viewing position when reading.

Where a reader's eyes land in a word both reflects and affects their word processing efficiency. Readers tend to land short of the center of a word, missing the optimal viewing position (OVP), especially when they skipped the previous word. Once they land, landing position error, or the deviation from the OVP, leads to shorter fixations-an inverted optimal viewing position (IOVP) effect. However, deaf readers who are early signers are highly efficient-they read faster, skip more words without negatively impacting their comprehension-and this efficiency may be related to their saccade targeting

Anchor objects guide spatial attention during visual search.

Semantic information is used to guide attention during scene-viewing, but how exactly does this occur? We tested the hypothesis that "anchor objects" are a special class of semantic associate essential to efficient target search in naturalistic scenes. Adult participants completed a RSVP search task for a target object preceded by a prime. In Experiment 1a (N = 210), the prime was either a semantic anchor or an unrelated object followed by a target in a congruent or incongruent spatial location relative to the prime. Experiment 1b (N = 157) served as a direct replication of Experiment 1a with

Common and proper nouns in mild Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Disturbance in naming accuracy and reaction time (RT) is one of the early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. Naming performance can be considered a diagnostic key in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD), which has remained diagnostically challenging. Although most of the studies in this field have been conducted on the naming accuracy of common nouns, others have shown that proper nouns are more sensitive for detecting the onset of AD. This study aims to compare the naming of common and proper nouns. METHOD: Eighty pictures of common and proper nouns (40 items each) were p

Objects seen as scenes: Neural circuitry for attending whole or parts.

Depending on our goals, we pay attention to the global shape of an object or to the local shape of its parts, since it's difficult to do both at once. This typically effortless process can be impaired in disease. However, it is not clear which cortical regions carry the information needed to constrain shape processing to a chosen global/local level. Here, novel stimuli were used to dissociate functional MRI responses to global and local shapes. This allowed identification of cortical regions containing information about level (independent from shape). Crucially, these regions overlapped part o

The VWFA Is the Home of Orthographic Learning When Houses Are Used as Letters.

Learning to read specializes a portion of the left mid-fusiform cortex for printed word recognition, the putative visual word form area (VWFA). This study examined whether a VWFA specialized for English is sufficiently malleable to support learning a perceptually atypical second writing system. The study utilized an artificial orthography, HouseFont, in which house images represent English phonemes. House images elicit category-biased activation in a spatially distinct brain region, the so-called parahippocampal place area (PPA). Using house images as letters made it possible to test whether t

Performance in delayed non-matching to sample task predicts the diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Electrical stimulation studies have recently evidenced the involvement of orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In addition, lateral OFC is activated in healthy subjects during delayed non-matching-to-sample task (DNMS). In the present study, we hypothesized that OCD results from a specific defect of lateral OFC processing that can be evidenced via a DNMS task. To this end, we compared the DNMS performances of 20 OCD patients vs 20 demographically matched healthy controls. As predicted, our results showed that OCD patients performed worse than healthy controls at D

The representational dynamics of visual objects in rapid serial visual processing streams.

In our daily lives, we are bombarded with a stream of rapidly changing visual input. Humans have the remarkable capacity to detect and identify objects in fast-changing scenes. Yet, when studying brain representations, stimuli are generally presented in isolation. Here, we studied the dynamics of human vision using a combination of fast stimulus presentation rates, electroencephalography and multivariate decoding analyses. Using a presentation rate of 5 images per second, we obtained the representational structure of a large number of stimuli, and showed the emerging abstract categorical organ
