Teen Line: a descriptive analysis of a peer telephone listening service.

Teen Line is a peer telephone listening service for adolescents. During its first year of operation, 2,270 phone calls were received. After an initial novelty effect, counts document a consistent level of use of the service. Two-thirds of the callers were female. Although 4% of topics discussed dealt with crisis situations (suicide, physical abuse), 96% were concerned with common, less urgent adolescent issues, such as peer relationships, family dynamics, and the need to have someone "just to talk to." This paper presents a model for an adolescent listening service and provides data garnered o

Opposite sex behaviours correlate with degree of homosexual feelings in the predominantly heterosexual.

There is extensive evidence that subjects who identify as homosexual show opposite sex-linked behaviours. However no attempt has been made to investigate whether a similar association exists between such behaviours and the presence of homosexual feelings in the predominantly heterosexual. Eighty medical students completed an anonymous questionnaire reporting the ratio of their heterosexual to homosexual feelings and the presence of sex-linked behaviours in their earlier life and currently. As in previous studies correlations between opposite sex behaviours and subjects' degree of homosexual fe

[Clinical picture and development of transsexualism].

The results of a clinical study of 33 patients with transsexualism (TS) have shown that TS is a pathological state of the person whose essence lies in the polar discrepancy of the biological sex with the forming psychic sex. It can be described as a true inversion of sexual identification and orientation. The formation of TS has been found to have a regular pattern. Four types of TS development have been identified. It has been shown that TS predisposes toward a high risk of suicidal behavior. It is suggested that the development of TS may be evaluated as autochthonous.

The multiple personality epidemic. Additional cases and inferences regarding diagnosis, etiology, dynamics, and treatment.

The past decade has witnessed a marked increase in the reported incidence of multiple personality patients. This review examines 16 papers published between 1970 and early 1981 that reported 29 cases of multiple personality other than the 50 cases reported earlier by George Greaves. These 29 case reports confirm that psychic and physical abuse, sexual trauma, and restrictive environments during childhood and consequent conflicts, especially regarding anger and sex, are likely to have etiological significance for this disorder. All but one of these patients were females, which might reflect sex

[Deficiencies in early education of the disabled (author's transl)].

Medical care is predominant in the early education of disabled infants. Although the physician is the first specialist assessing the disability, he should not dominate the course of the therapy for too long. Otherwise other occupational groups, e.g., pedagogues and psychologists are involved too late in the therapeutic process. The result is that the development of disabled babies and infants is characterised by a deficiency in the most sensitive learning and receptivity phase. Early educational measures are most often carried out at home with the active assistance of the parents. For families

Nightmares: clinical characteristics and personality patterns.

The authors evaluated the development and clinical course of nightmares and the personality patterns of people with this dosorder by studying 30 adults who had a current complaint of nightmares. Nightmares usually began in childhood or adolescence and were chronic. Psychological factors played a major role in the development and persistence of nightmares, major life events were often associated with the onset of the disorder, mental stress usually increased the frequency of events, and psychological testing indicated relatively high levels of psychopathology. Nightmares sufferers in general we

Psychiatric implications of language disorders and learning disabilities: risks and management.

This article reviews the relationship between different learning disabilities, language disorders, and the psychiatric disorders that are commonly associated with learning disabilities and language disorder: attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, depression, and conduct or antisocial personality disorder. The complex associations between language disorders and specific learning disabilities--dyslexia, nonverbal learning disorder, dyscalculia--and the various psychiatric disorders are discussed. Clinical vignettes are presented to highlight the impact of these disor

Patients' reactions to humorous interventions in psychotherapy.

This study explores the preference of patients for humorous or nonhumorous therapist interventions. Hysterical, obsessive, and depressive patients were presented with three functional kinds of humorous interventions: emotional confrontation, anxiety reduction and perspective development. The data indicate that the patients consistently favored the nonhumorous interventions, but the degree of this preference varied according to personality style. Obsessive patients stood out in their ardent repudiation of humorous interventions. The results suggest that the desirability of utilizing humor in th

Psychosomatic aspects of Menière's disease.

The author presents a study of the personality structure, youth development and the role of interhuman conflicts in the work situation and the family, in the causation and course of Menière's disease, the somatopsychic reactions of the patients to the illness, and the principles of a form of psychotherapy which was combined with the regular E.N.T. check-ups and treatment. The results confirm and extend previous work by other researchers. A testable hypothesis about the specific psychosomatic etiology of Menière's disease is formulated and presented.

Characterizing the role of unpredictability within different dimensions of early life adversity.

Dimensional models of early life adversity highlight the distinct roles of deprivation and threat in shaping neurocognitive development and mental health. However, relatively little is known about the role of unpredictability within each dimension. We estimated both the average levels of, and the temporal unpredictability of deprivation and threat exposure during adolescence in a high-risk, longitudinal sample of 1354 youth (Pathways to Desistance study). We then related these estimates to later life psychological distress, and Antisocial and Borderline personality traits, and tested whether a

Role of Psychological Factors in Migraine.

Migraine, marked by moderate to severe headaches, is frequently accompanied by reversible neurological symptoms. Recent studies have revealed a complex and significant relationship between psychological factors and the onset and progression of migraine. Personality traits, such as neuroticism and harm avoidance, play a crucial role in the development, progression, and treatment outcomes of migraines. Migraine patients often experience comorbid mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, which contribute to a diminished quality of life by exacerbating migraine-related disability a

Epidemiology of personality disorders in individuals with gender dysphoria.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Prevalence estimates of personality disorders (PD) in individuals with gender dysphoria (GD) are variable and heterogeneous, as psychiatric comorbidity and long-term follow-up data from gender-diverse samples are still limited. This review aims to assess prevalence rates across age groups and discuss potential reasons for variability in PD prevalence estimates among transgender people. RECENT FINDINGS: International epidemiological data from several countries indicate that the best available estimates of the prevalence of any PD diagnosis in transgender youth are around 20%

Borderline personality features and altered social feedback processing in emerging adults: An EEG study.

The goal of this study was to examine social feedback processing among emerging adults with borderline personality features (BPF). Participants (N = 118; 66.9% female) completed ratings of BPF and a computerized peer interaction task designed to measure processing of rejection and acceptance cues at the neurophysiological (i.e., electroencephalogram [EEG]), behavioral, and self-report levels. When covarying symptoms of depression and social anxiety, greater BPF were associated with heightened neural processing of social acceptance cues, accounting for reactivity to neutral and rejection cues,

Prevalence and predictors of mental distress among Italian Red Cross auxiliary corps: A cross-sectional evaluation after deployment in anti-COVID-19 operations.

The aim of the present study is to describe the prevalence and individual predictors of mental distress (anxiety, depression, and burnout) in a sample of volunteers engaged in emergency services. A total of 823 volunteers enrolled in the Red Cross auxiliary corps were surveyed between 28 June 2021 and 28 August 2021 (299 men and 524 women). After deployment in anti-COVID-19 operations, participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and Big Five Inventory through an online platform. Females with Eating Disorders and Urinary Incontinence: A Psychoanalytic Perspective.

Eating disorders (EDs) are complicated mental illnesses with significant treatment resistance and dropout rates. For successful treatment, it is important for clinicians to better understand the patients' narrative and their lived experiences. A thorough psychodynamic understanding of patients' childhood attachment and primary relationships, personality traits and mental processes is, therefore, crucial for managing patients with ED. Interestingly, several studies have observed an association between functional urinary symptoms and individuals with ED. EDs such as anorexia nervosa are associat

The Role of Trauma in Early Onset Borderline Personality Disorder: A Biopsychosocial Perspective.

The role of childhood trauma in the development of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in young age has long been studied. The most accurate theoretical models are multifactorial, taking into account a range of factors, including early trauma, to explain evolutionary pathways of BPD. We reviewed studies published on PubMed in the last 20 years to evaluate whether different types of childhood trauma, like sexual and physical abuse and neglect, increase the risk and shape the clinical picture of BPD. BPD as a sequela of childhood traumas often occurs with multiple comorbidities (e.g. mood, anx

The association between cannabis use and psychiatric comorbidity in people with personality disorders: A population-based longitudinal study.

Both personality disorders (PD) and cannabis use are highly comorbid with various psychiatric disorders. While previous research indicates specific interactions between cannabis use and schizotypal PD associated with schizophrenia, research into cannabis use among individuals with other PDs and the development of several additional psychiatric disorders is scarce. We explored the prevalence and incidence of psychiatric disorders among individuals with PDs who use cannabis, and whether individuals with PDs who use cannabis are at increased risk for developing psychiatric disorders compared to c

Behavioral and electrophysiological responses to fairness norm violations in antisocial offenders.

Antisocial personality disorder is characterized by a stable, lifelong pattern of disregard for and violation of others' rights. Disruptions in the representation of fairness norms may represent a key mechanism in the development and maintenance of this disorder. Here, we investigated fairness norm considerations and reactions to their violations. To examine electrophysiological correlates, we assessed the medial frontal negativity (MFN), an event-related potential previously linked to violations of social expectancy and norms. Incarcerated antisocial violent offenders (AVOs, n = 25) and healt
