The purpose of this paper is to expand on the phenotype of oculocutaneous albinism type 7 (OCA7). We described three patients with OCA7: two from a consanguineous family of Kurdish origin and one patient of Dutch origin. We compared them with all patients described to date in the literature. All newly described patients had severely reduced visual acuity (VA), nystagmus, hypopigmentation of the fundus, severe foveal hypoplasia, and chiasmal misrouting. None had iris translucency. All patients had normal pigmentation of skin and hair. We found one novel mutation in the Dutch patient: c.565G > A

Melanins form the basis of animal pigmentation. When the sulphurated form of melanin, termed pheomelanin, is synthesized, the sulfhydryl group of cysteine is incorporated to the pigment structure. This may constrain physiological performance because it consumes the most important intracellular antioxidant (i.e., glutathione, GSH), of which cysteine is a constitutive amino acid. However, this may also help avoid excess cysteine, which is toxic. Pheomelanin synthesis is regulated by several genes, some of them exerting this regulation by controlling the transport of cysteine in melanocytes. We i

Griscelli syndrome type 1 (GS1) is a rare inherited autosomal recessive disease caused by a deleterious variant in the MYO5A gene and characterized by general hypopigmentation, neurological symptoms, motor disability, hypotonia, and vision abnormality. Only nine pathogenic variants in the MYO5A gene have been confirmed in association with the GS1. All of the reported pathogenic variants are truncating. Herein, two siblings from a consanguineous Iranian family with abnormal pigmentation and neurological symptoms were referred for genetic counseling. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) revealed a novel

Hypomelanosis of Ito (incontinentia pigmenti achromians) is a neurocutaneous syndrome consisting of bizarre, patterned, macular hypopigmentation over variable portions of the body surface. Associated defects in other systems occur, commonly in the central nervous system, in a significant percentage of affected individuals. Six children affected by hypomelanosis of Ito are presented. Similarities and differences between hypomelanosis and incontinentia pigmenti and systematized achromic nevus are discussed.

As a cutaneous appendage, the hair follicle is tightly associated with the skin during growth, pigmentation, and aging. These two interconnected tissues share evolutionarily conserved regulatory mechanisms-including stem cell niche signaling, inflammatory cascades, and oxidative stress-and collectively function as hallmarks of systemic organismal aging. Hair abnormalities are well-established concomitant manifestations of aged skin. The crosstalk between skin aging and hair aging is particularly pronounced in several hereditary progeroid disorders, which are typified by concurrent premature ag

Arsenic intake can cause human health disorders to the lungs, urinary tract, kidney, liver, hyper-pigmentation, muscles, neurological and even cancer. Biochar is potent, economical and ecologically sound adsorbents for water purification. After surface modifications, adsorption capacity of biochar significantly increased due to high porosity and reactivity. Adsorption capacities of the biochar derived from the municipal solid waste and KOH mixed municipal solid waste were increased from 24.49 and 30.98 mg/g for arsenic adsorption. Complex formation, electrostatic behavior and ion exchange are

Among disorders of pigmentation, vitiligo is the most common, with an estimated prevalence between 0.5% and 1%. The disease has gathered increased attention in the most recent years, leading to a better understanding of the disease's pathophysiology and its implications and to the development of newer therapeutic strategies. A better, more integrated approach is already in use for other chronic inflammatory dermatological diseases such as psoriasis, for which metabolic comorbidities are well-established and part of the routine clinical evaluation. The pathogenesis of these might be linked to c

Acne is a common cause for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), particularly in patients with skin of color (SOC), and PIH is often more distressing to patients than the acne itself. Topical retinoids are approved for the treatment of acne and for pigmentation disorders such as melasma or mottled hyperpigmentation associated with photodamage; moreover, they have been shown to reduce hyperpigmentation in patients with SOC. Therefore, treatment with topical retinoids should be started as early as possible unless contraindicated. Use of novel formulations or application of commonly recommen…

In this review, we propose that telomere length dynamics play an important but underinvestigated role in the biology of the hair follicle (HF), a prototypic, cyclically remodeled miniorgan that shows an intriguing aging pattern in humans. Whereas the HF pigmentary unit ages quickly, its epithelial stem cell (ESC) component and regenerative capacity are surprisingly aging resistant. Telomerase-deficient mice with short telomeres display an aging phenotype of hair graying and hair loss that is attributed to impaired HF ESC mobilization. Yet, it remains unclear whether the function of telomerase
