Little is known about the recovery of postural control in patients following acute vestibular loss. This paper reports on the results of moving-platform posturography to assess the recovery of postural stability in 24 patients following vestibular nerve section. Posturography was abnormal prior to surgery in 17% of the patients. The clinician posturologist studies vision as one of the sources of informations about the small movements of the body relative to its environment, informations which enable controlling postural stability. But this way of working, very restrictive indeed, acquires a great clinical dimension because visual information must be integrated with all the other postural informations, and it appears that this integration is not always satisfactory and that its disorders can be detected and cured in many illnesses.

Detailed neurological and audiological examinations and body-sway measurements with a stable platform were carried out on 60 subjects who had been exposed to high-energy intermittent noise from firearms and had various degrees of noise-induced hearing loss. A double-blind study was undertaken to determine the relationship (if one exits) between the extent of postural sway in standing of individual elderly subjects and their frequency of falling. A total of 205 subjects were studied; their average age was 81.8 years. A total of 136 patients with a compression syndrome of the upper limb were examined systematically by selective dynamic angiography as developed by the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Montreal. Changes in urinary protein excretion induced by standing or by the application of venous tourniquets to the thighs while the patient is in the supine position were studied in patients with mild proteinuria and compared with the changes that occur in severe proteinuria (greater than 1 mg/min). Protein excretion decreased in the majority of patients. Irrespective of the initial degree of proteinuria. The increased rate of protein excretion that occurred in a minority of patients when standing may represent a phenomenon analogous to orthostatic proteinuria.
